To grow micro tomatoes successfully, choose a true micro-dwarf such as Micro Tom, give it strong light, and plant it in a draining container filled with soilless potting mix. Check the mix regularly and water when its top two inches are dry, keeping it moist but not soggy. Pot size, watering needs, and time to harvest depend on the cultivar and growing conditions; a production recommendation for Micro Tom is not a universal rule for every compact tomato.

Choose a true micro-dwarf tomato

Seed listings use “micro,” “dwarf,” “patio,” and “compact” inconsistently. Check the named cultivar’s mature height and spread rather than relying on “dwarf” alone. Micro-dwarfs are bred to remain especially small; a patio tomato may still grow substantially larger. Iowa State Extension notes that some dwarf tomatoes reach only 8–12 inches, while determinate plants stop growing at a set size and tend to produce over a shorter window. Dwarf cultivars can fruit more like indeterminate types, which continue growing and producing through the season.

Micro Tom is specifically described as extremely dwarf by PanAmerican Seed. When comparing cultivars, look for mature size, fruit size and color, days to ripening, and indoor or outdoor suitability. Those details vary by variety, and a small plant does not by itself tell you how much fruit it will produce.

Set up a suitable place to grow

Light and location

For outdoor container tomatoes, UNH Extension recommends at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight. Indoors, a bright window may not provide enough light, so a supplemental LED grow light can help. Washington State University Extension’s indoor micro-dwarf guidance recommends 12–14 hours of strong artificial light daily; it does not specify a universal light intensity or wattage. WSU also cautions that a windowsill can become too cold at night or too hot on sunny days. Check the plant’s conditions through the day rather than assuming a window is consistently suitable.

Pot size and growing medium

Use a pot with drainage holes and a light, soilless potting mix. UNH Extension explains that soilless mixes can retain moisture while maintaining air space and drainage; dense garden soil is a poor fit for a container. Match the pot to the named cultivar and its growing conditions.

Published pot guidance differs because it covers different growing contexts:

  • Keep moist, not letting the seeds dry out between watering. **SOIL Temperature for Germination: 70-75F. Planting Depth: 1/4". Sprout tomato seeds in small containers, preferably 4" or smaller. In-ground germination is not recommended. Use a standard potting mix that is well drained.
  • Start seeds in containers approximately 8 weeks prior to the planned set-out date. Plants should ultimately be transplanted to the garden 1-2 weeks after the expected date of last frost. Soil should be kept consistently warm, from 70-85F. Cool soils, below about 60-65F, even just at night, will significantly delay or inhibit germination. Additionally, overly warm soils, well above 90F, can inhibit germination and provide ideal conditions for seed rot.
  • Over watering can cause fungal growth which leads to seed rot. Excess water can also bury seeds deep in the soil where they will not be able break the surface. Water when the soil surface just begins to dry.
  • Multiple seeds can be planted in a single starter container, but should be thinned once seedlings appear so only a single plant remains. Seeds do not require light for germination but some light source should be provided for seedlings once they emerge from the soil.
Guidance Container size How to interpret it
PanAmerican Seed, Micro Tom production sheet (2024) Well suited to 3–4-inch (8–10 cm) pots; its production schedule lists one plant per 4-inch, 4.5-inch/quart, or 5-inch/6-inch/one-gallon container. Cultivar-specific commercial production guidance, not a general home rule for every micro-dwarf.
Washington State University Extension, indoor micro-dwarf guidance One-gallon pot. Advice for micro-dwarfs; it differs from Micro Tom’s smaller production-pot recommendation.
UNH Extension, general container tomato guidance Four- to five-gallon container per plant. General tomato advice; UNH separately notes that compact or dwarf cultivars suit small spaces better.

Before planting, check the seed packet or cultivar description. A container that works for Micro Tom under production conditions is not automatically the right choice for a larger compact variety or a home with different watering and light conditions.

Temperature and starting seeds

You can start from seed or buy a correctly labeled plant where available. PanAmerican Seed’s 2024 Micro Tom production sheet gives 70–75°F (21–24°C) for the first germination stage, followed by 68–72°F (20–22°C) in later early stages. For growing on, it lists 65–70°F days and 62–65°F nights. These are technical recommendations for commercial plug production, not universal household requirements. WSU’s indoor micro-dwarf guidance instead gives a consistent 72–80°F range, illustrating that temperature recommendations vary with source and production context.

Care for the plant as it grows

Water consistently, not by the calendar

Container mix can dry quickly, and demand changes with pot size, plant size, temperature, and weather. UNH Extension advises checking when the top two inches of mix are dry, then watering until excess drains. Aim for consistently moist mix, not waterlogged soil. As plants grow and temperatures rise, container tomatoes may need thorough watering once daily or even twice daily, but check the mix instead of following a fixed schedule. Uneven moisture can contribute to fruit cracking or blossom-end rot.

PanAmerican Seed’s Micro Tom production notes call for very dry conditions from spacing until flowering to limit stretch. That is specialized production guidance, not home-container watering advice: avoid drought stress and water according to the condition of your potting mix.

  • Micro Dwarf Tomato with plump juicy orange fruits.
  • Keep soil moist until germination, which should occur within 7 to 10 days.
  • New Plants can range between 1 to 2ft depending on how large the pot & frequency of watering, sweet orange round cherries.
  • Great for balconies, patios, aerogardens and growing under lights in the winter.

Feed modestly and follow the label

Container plants need nutrients, but more fertilizer does not mean more fruit. UNH recommends applying a timed-release fertilizer according to its label at planting and discusses supplemental soluble feeding in its general container-tomato guidance. Choose a product suited to the plant and growth stage, and follow its directions.

Tomatoes can be sensitive to high soluble salts, especially ammonium, during early growth. PanAmerican Seed keeps nitrogen below 100 ppm during Micro Tom plug-production stages; that is a commercial specification, not a household fertilizer recipe. Maryland Extension advises against adding Epsom salts unless a soil test shows magnesium deficiency.

  • 100% NON-GMO genuine seeds.
  • Expected blooming period: Spring to Fall

Support stems and allow pollination

Micro-dwarfs usually need less pruning and staking than large indeterminate tomatoes. If a stem bends or risks breaking under fruit weight, add light support; WSU Extension specifically advises supporting vines when needed. PanAmerican Seed recommends staking Micro Tom for shipment stability, which does not mean every home-grown plant requires a stake.

Tomatoes self-pollinate, according to Iowa State Extension. The available guidance does not establish a specific hand-pollination routine for indoor micro tomatoes, so do not assume manual pollination is routinely necessary.

Know what to expect at harvest

PanAmerican Seed’s 2024 Micro Tom production sheet estimates 50–55 days to ripe fruit. Treat that as a commercial culture-sheet estimate for this cultivar, not a guaranteed harvest date for every home setup or any other micro-dwarf. The sheet describes Micro Tom as covered with sweet fruit but does not give a yield count, so a reliable number of tomatoes per plant is not established here.

UNH Extension recommends harvesting tomatoes when fully colored for best flavor. The ripe color depends on the variety, so use the cultivar description rather than expecting every tomato to turn red.
