Grow Swiss chard in fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture and a sunny spot; plant during a locally suitable cool season, then pick outer leaves while leaving the center crown intact. Chard tolerates some shade, but Maryland Extension says it grows best with six to eight hours of direct sun. Because planting windows and spacing vary by region and desired leaf size, use local frost dates and the seed packet to set your schedule.

Choose a planting time for your climate

Swiss chard is a leafy crop that generally performs best in cooler weather. Utah State University Extension says it grows best when temperatures do not exceed 75°F, and Wisconsin Extension notes that high temperatures can slow leaf production. These are useful guides, not guarantees for every cultivar or garden. In hot weather, expect slower growth or lower-quality leaves.

Planting calendars differ by region. Maryland Extension recommends sowing in early spring and late summer. Utah State says chard can be seeded several weeks before the last frost-free date and gives fall timing based on cultivar maturity and the expected first frost. Florida IFAS recommends a September-to-spring window for Florida. Use these regional recommendations alongside your local frost dates rather than applying one calendar everywhere.

Pick a growing method and planting distance

You can sow chard directly in the garden or start it indoors and transplant it. Direct sowing is straightforward; transplants can be useful when you want to establish plants on a schedule. Choose spacing according to your goal: close planting can provide young leaves, while more room allows plants to grow larger. Follow your seed packet and locally relevant extension guidance rather than combining different regional recommendations into a single rule.

Approach Published guidance Best fit
Maryland home-garden sowing Sow seeds about 2 inches apart, cover with roughly ½ inch of fine soil, then thin; leave 8–12 inches for larger plants. University of Maryland Extension: Growing Swiss Chard in a Home Garden. Gardeners following Maryland guidance who want to thin seedlings to their intended plant size.
Utah row planting Sow about ½ inch deep; space plants 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. Utah State University Extension: How to Grow Swiss Chard in Your Garden (published April 2020). Gardeners using this row-planting method and regional guidance.
Illinois thinning approach Illinois Extension describes thinning options, including closer initial spacing when excess seedlings will be harvested young. Consult the guidance for details: Chard | Home Vegetable Gardening. Gardeners who plan to use thinnings as young leaves.

For a bed, loosen the soil and remove weeds before planting. In containers, choose a pot with drainage holes and enough room for the plant size you want; use a suitable growing mix and keep moisture even. A container may also be useful if garden soil has heavy root-knot nematode pressure, as Florida IFAS advises checking roots when plants grow slowly and considering a planter or grow bucket in heavily infested soil.

Give plants light, soil, water, and nutrients

Light and soil

Choose a sunny location and fertile, well-drained soil. Maryland Extension says chard tolerates four to six hours of direct sun but grows best with six to eight hours. Utah State emphasizes fertile soil rich in organic matter and good drainage; Florida IFAS recommends at least six hours of direct sun in its regional guidance.

Water and mulch

Keep soil reasonably and consistently moist, especially while plants are establishing and during dry spells. Maryland Extension advises deep, regular watering in dry periods. Utah State and Alabama Extension give one to two inches of water per week as general guidance; actual need varies with soil and temperature. Mulch can help conserve moisture and reduce weeds.

Fertilizer

Chard needs nutrients, but the right amount depends on your soil and regional recommendations. Maryland Extension describes it as having a high nutrient requirement; Alabama Extension advises using soil-test results where available. Avoid applying a universal dose: follow local guidance and the fertilizer label.

Harvest leaves without stopping regrowth

You can pick leaves young for tenderness or let them grow larger. Harvest outer leaves and leave the center crown or growing point intact so the plant can continue producing. Maryland Extension says leaves can be cut about two inches above the crown; Illinois Extension likewise cautions against damaging the terminal bud. Florida IFAS recommends picking a few outer leaves at a time. Both the leaves and fleshy stems are edible.

Days-to-maturity estimates vary with source and conditions: Maryland Extension lists 50–70 days from direct sowing, Florida IFAS gives 40–60 days, and Alabama Extension gives 50–75 days. Treat these as approximate ranges, not a guaranteed picking date. Leaf size and tenderness are practical cues for when to harvest.

Store fresh chard briefly

Chard is perishable, so refrigerate it promptly in cold, moist conditions. Illinois Extension advises minimizing storage time and gives two to three days for unwashed leaves in a crisper. Storage life depends on conditions, so treat that span as guidance rather than a promise.

Identify common pests and problems

Inspect leaves and their undersides regularly. Several pests and diseases can affect chard, and treatments should match a correctly identified problem and local recommendations.

  • Flea beetles: Small holes and seedling damage can indicate flea beetles. Utah State Extension lists floating row cover as an exclusion option, particularly when seedlings are vulnerable.
  • Aphids: Check leaf undersides for aphids. Utah State describes washing them off with a strong stream of water, using insecticidal soap, or using an appropriate insecticide; follow product labels and local guidance.
  • Slow growth or root-knot nematodes: Florida IFAS advises checking roots when plants grow slowly. Where garden soil is heavily infested, it suggests growing in a planter or grow bucket instead.
  • Other reported problems: Utah State identifies slugs; Delaware Extension lists leaf miners, leaf spot, and downy mildew, as well as aphids. Confirm the cause before choosing a response.
