Geraniums are attractive, scented ornamentals, but the available evidence does not show that planting them repels ticks from a yard. Grow them for their foliage and fragrance if you like; manage tick habitat separately, and use personal protection when you enter areas where ticks may be present.
Can planting geraniums keep ticks away?
No reliable evidence here establishes that live geranium plants repel ticks in a landscape. Rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) is a scented-leaf ornamental, not a proven yard tick treatment. Clemson Cooperative Extension also notes that the advertised mosquito-repellent claim for “mosquito geranium” has not been proven; that statement concerns mosquitoes, not a tick trial. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s geranium guide describes the plant and the limits of that mosquito claim.
Evidence about geranium oil does not change that conclusion. A review in Emerging Infectious Diseases reported that a 10% geranium-oil lotion showed no repellency at four hours, while one assay’s complete protection time for geranium oil was more than 10 minutes but less than one hour. Those were results from oil formulations and specific tests—not trials of geraniums growing in yards. The review cautions that consumers should not assume an unregulated product works just because it lists a minimum-risk active ingredient; effectiveness can vary by product. Read the review of minimum-risk ingredients tested against ticks.
How to grow geraniums for their ornamental value
Rose geranium is one of the scented-leaf geraniums described by Clemson Cooperative Extension, with foliage known for its rose-like scent. Choose it for the appearance or fragrance you want, rather than as a tick-control measure. The available guidance does not establish a tick-repellent geranium variety or provide a basis for recommending particular planting distances, regional hardiness, or landscape placement for tick control.

How to make a yard less favorable to ticks
Tick-management guidance focuses on habitat, including humid ground-level areas with tall grass and dense understory. Yard work can reduce those favorable conditions, though it cannot guarantee a tick-free property.
- Keep grass clipped. Mowing reduces tall, humid grass where ticks may find suitable habitat.
- Clear brush and leaf litter. Remove accumulated debris and thick understory where practical.
- Increase sunlight at ground level. Iowa State University Extension recommends allowing more sunlight to reach the soil as part of reducing favorable yard conditions. Iowa State Extension’s discussion of nearby plants and pest claims provides context for why planting claims should not replace habitat management.
- Consider an edge barrier where it suits the site. Penn State Extension describes a 3-foot-wide wood-chip or stone barrier between lawn and wooded edges. It is a landscape-management measure, not a guarantee; consider whether the placement and material work for your property. Penn State Extension’s tick and tickborne disease guidance discusses landscape measures.
For additional yard-management context, see Iowa State Extension’s guide to tick control in the yard and landscape.

Protect yourself when spending time outdoors
Landscaping and personal protection do different jobs. When entering tick habitat, use a product labeled for ticks and follow its current label directions. Penn State Extension describes permethrin-treated clothing or fabric, including commercially pretreated clothing, as an option; permethrin products for clothing are not for application to skin. Penn State Extension explains how to use insect and tick repellents safely.
Do not treat a scented plant or botanical oil as interchangeable with a product labeled for tick protection. A yard can be managed to reduce suitable habitat while personal precautions remain necessary when you go outdoors.
