How to Grow and Care for Succulents Indoors and in Containers

Keep succulents healthy with bright light, a draining pot, porous soil, and watering guided by dry soil—not a fixed calendar.

Most succulents thrive with abundant light, a porous growing mix, and a pot that drains. The most important watering rule is to wait until the soil is completely dry, then water thoroughly and empty any excess. There is no reliable calendar for every succulent: species, season, light, temperature, humidity, pot, and soil all affect how quickly it dries.

What succulents need to grow well

“Succulents” covers a wide range of plants, including cacti. Their care needs differ, so treat general guidance as a starting point and adjust to the plant and its growing conditions.

  • Bright light: Give most indoor succulents abundant light. University of Illinois Extension suggests six to eight hours of bright sunlight as general indoor guidance, not a measured prescription for every species. If your window does not provide enough, fluorescent or LED supplemental lighting may help.
  • Fast drainage: Use porous medium and a pot with drainage holes so water does not collect around the roots.
  • Water only when dry: Let the growing medium dry completely between waterings, then water deeply and drain away the excess.
  • Seasonal adjustment: Reduce watering during darker winter conditions, when growth may slow or plants may rest.

How much light do succulents need?

Place indoor succulents in the brightest suitable spot you have. A plant that grows long, weak, or noticeably leans toward a window may not be getting enough light. Rotate the pot periodically to encourage more even growth. When natural light is inadequate, a fluorescent or LED grow light is an option; the available guidance does not establish one exact distance or light intensity for every species.

How and when to water succulents

Check the medium rather than watering on a fixed day. Once it is completely dry, water thoroughly until water runs from the drainage holes. Let the pot drain and discard water left in a saucer or outer container.

Illinois Extension gives every two to three weeks as a rough estimate for indoor succulents, but explicitly advises watering only when the soil is completely dry. Do not treat that interval as a schedule: drying speed changes with plant type, light, temperature, humidity, air circulation, pot size, and soil composition.

In low-light winter conditions, reduce watering. Some plants rest, and the University of Minnesota Extension advises watering only enough to prevent shrinking and withering in such conditions. Watch the plant and the soil together rather than relying on a seasonal timetable alone.

Choose a pot and growing mix that drain

Use a container with drainage holes. Terracotta is one useful choice because its porous sides help the growing medium dry more quickly. Whatever the material, a decorative outer pot or saucer should not leave the plant standing in water.

Choose a commercial cactus and succulent mix or make a porous mix. University of Illinois Extension describes one part organic matter to two parts mineral material, such as coarse sand, perlite, or pumice. University of Minnesota Extension describes one part potting soil to one part coarse sand as a usually porous option. These are different examples, not a single universal formula; the goal is a medium that drains well and suits the plant and conditions.

Move container succulents outdoors gradually

Many container succulents can spend summer outdoors, but a sudden move from indoor or shaded conditions into strong, unfiltered sun can burn foliage. Start in indirect light or shade and move the plant toward brighter conditions over time.

Outdoor timing depends on local frost risk and temperatures. Illinois Extension’s seasonal guidance reflects Illinois conditions; gardeners elsewhere should use local frost dates and conditions rather than copying an Illinois calendar.

Fertilize lightly and watch for pests

Many succulents need little fertilizer. Illinois Extension suggests a light annual application in late spring or summer at one-quarter to one-half of the label rate. The University of Minnesota Extension distinguishes cacti from other succulents in its feeding guidance, so avoid applying one regimen to every plant. Follow the product label and the needs of the particular succulent.

Scale and mealybugs can affect succulents. Isolate an infested plant from nearby plants, and if you use rubbing alcohol, neem oil, or insecticidal soap, follow the product label and take care not to damage the plant.

Propagate succulents with offsets or cuttings

Offsets, leaf cuttings, and stem cuttings are common propagation methods, but not every method works for every succulent. Use a healthy parent plant and a clean blade or pruners. Let cut surfaces dry and heal before planting; excessive moisture while roots form can cause problems.

Offsets

Some succulents produce small plants, or offsets, beside the parent. Aloe is one example discussed in Extension propagation guidance. Separate an offset when appropriate for the plant, then pot it in suitable porous medium.

Stem cuttings

  1. Use a clean razor blade or pruners to take a stem cutting from a suitable plant.
  2. Remove lower leaves that would sit in the growing medium.
  3. Leave the cut surface exposed to air until it dries and heals.
  4. Plant it in suitable porous medium. University of Minnesota Extension describes slightly moistened sterile sand and advises watering sparingly.

Leaf cuttings

Some succulents can be propagated from leaves; others cannot. Follow a method appropriate to the species, let the wound dry before planting, and avoid keeping the medium wet. Rooting and new growth times vary, so do not assume a fixed timetable.

Common care problems to check first

  • Long, weak, or leaning growth: The plant may need more light. Try a brighter location or supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting.
  • Soil stays wet: Check for a pot without drainage holes, standing water, or a mix that does not dry adequately.
  • Leaves burn after going outside: The change to direct sun may have been too abrupt. Return the plant to shade or indirect light and acclimate it more gradually.
  • Winter care is unchanged from summer: In low light, growth and water use may slow. Check that the medium dries before watering and reduce watering as conditions require.
