1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stain interior wood, prepare a clean, dry surface, test the color on the same wood, then apply and wipe the stain as its label directs. The product label—not a general rule—determines the suitable surface, applicator, timing, cleanup method, and whether a topcoat is compatible.
Choose a stain for the wood and project
Check that the stain is intended for the surface and for interior use. Determine whether the wood is bare or has an existing finish; if it is coated, follow the product’s directions for removing that finish or preparing the surface. Do not assume instructions for interior furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, or paneling apply to exterior decks or to materials such as concrete or fabric.
| Stain type | Useful distinction | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-based | Sherwin-Williams describes a longer working time, which can help on larger surfaces where maintaining a wet edge matters. | Follow the label for applicator, drying, cleanup, and safe handling; cleanup generally uses mineral spirits or paint thinner as directed. |
| Water-based | Sherwin-Williams describes faster drying and soap-and-water cleanup. | Applicator and recoat instructions can be product-specific. For example, Varathane Water-Based Wood Stain is for interior use and is not recommended for floors. |
| Gel | Sherwin-Williams describes gel stain as useful on vertical surfaces such as trim and furniture to help eliminate drips. | Check that the specific product is suitable for the surface and follow its application and cleanup directions. |
Compare products by intended surface and indoor or outdoor use, working and drying time, cleanup, applicator, and suitability for vertical surfaces. No one formulation is the right choice for every project.
Prepare the wood
- Confirm the surface condition. Work out whether the wood is bare or previously finished. Prepare or remove an existing coating only as the chosen stain’s instructions require.
- Sand bare wood as directed. Sand with the grain, following the stain maker’s preparation guidance. The Varathane water-based stain instructions, updated January 22, 2026, specify a progression of 120-, 150-, and 180-grit sandpaper and advise against steel wool. Those grits are for that product, not a universal prescription.
- Remove sanding dust. The surface should be clean and dry before staining. Dust or contamination can interfere with an even result.
- Consider conditioner where it fits. Softwoods can absorb stain unevenly. Manufacturer guidance describes pre-stain conditioner as a way to help achieve more uniform color. Match the conditioner to the stain—Minwax offers options for water-based and oil-based stains—and follow its timing directions.
Test the color before coating the visible surface
Stir the stain, then try it on a hidden area or a scrap from the project. Wood species, preparation, and the product all affect the final appearance, so the color shown on a container is not a reliable substitute for a test on the actual wood. Let the test dry as directed before judging it.

Apply and wipe the stain
- Set up for controlled work. Use the applicator specified on the product label, and work in a way that lets you maintain a wet edge and blend each area into the last wet section. This helps reduce lap marks.
- Apply smoothly with the grain. General Sherwin-Williams guidance recommends even application in the direction of the grain. Follow the chosen product’s directions for how much stain to apply and how long to leave it on.
- Wipe off excess as directed. Remove excess stain with the specified material and wipe with the grain. Do not let an adjacent section dry before blending if the product calls for wet blending.
Applicator and dwell time are not interchangeable across products. For example, Varathane Water-Based Wood Stain directs users to apply with a clean, lint-free cloth, leave the stain for 2–3 minutes, and wipe excess in the direction of the grain. Its instructions say not to use a bristle or foam brush. Follow that method only when using that product.
Allow for drying, recoating, and a protective finish
Use the label’s drying times and conditions before applying another coat or a protective finish. High humidity can slow drying. Sherwin-Williams says most stains have an optimum near 70°F and gives 50–90°F as a safety range, while cautioning that stains vary; check the chosen product’s instructions rather than treating those temperatures as universal.

These are product-specific intervals, not general recoat or topcoat times. Confirm that a protective finish is suitable for the stain and wait the time its label specifies.
