Care advice here applies mainly to Ruellia simplex, commonly called Mexican petunia, Mexican bluebell, or Britton’s wild petunia—not to every plant in the Ruellia genus. Before planting, identify the species and check local invasive-plant guidance: wild-type R. simplex is classified as invasive in Florida.
Identify the Ruellia before choosing a care routine
“Ruellia” is a genus, not a single plant with one set of growing requirements. The recommendations below are for Ruellia simplex; NC State Extension also lists the older name Ruellia brittoniana. Confirm the plant’s identity before using this care profile. NC State Extension’s profile covers the species and its growing conditions.
Check whether it is suitable to plant in your area
In Florida, UF/IFAS classifies wild-type R. simplex as invasive and does not recommend it for use anywhere in the state. It spreads through lateral roots and abundant viable seed. UF/IFAS consumer guidance advises avoiding Mexican petunia unless selecting a cultivar specifically tested as non-invasive; ‘Purple Showers’ is one example, and the broader assessment says certain evaluated cultivars were approved for use with caution in Florida. That guidance does not establish that every cultivar is harmless or indicate the plant’s status elsewhere. Check local invasive-plant and nursery guidance before buying or planting. UF/IFAS’s assessment and its Mexican petunia guidance explain the Florida-specific advice.
Florida readers can also consider the native Ruellia caroliniensis alternative mentioned by UF/IFAS, while confirming local suitability and availability. In other regions, do not assume Florida’s designation applies; seek guidance for your locality.

Light
Full sun supports the best flowering. R. simplex can also tolerate partial shade, according to NC State Extension.
Soil and moisture
For growth, provide fertile, well-drained soil with medium to wet moisture. The species tolerates boggy conditions and a range from wet to dry; established plants also tolerate drought. These tolerances describe R. simplex and should not be applied to Ruellia species generally.

- What You Will Receive: You will receive a Pack of 2 healthy, well-rooted 'Purple Showers' Ruellia starter plants, each currently 5-9 inches tall. Shipped bare-root for maximum vigor, these starts are ready to explode with growth, rapidly reaching mature heights of 3-4 feet to fill vertical spaces in your landscape.
- Vertical Drama & Deep Color: Add height and elegance to your garden backdrop. Unlike the dwarf groundcover varieties, 'Purple Showers' stands tall (3-4 feet) with willow-like foliage and large, deep violet trumpet flowers. It provides constant blooms from spring to frost, creating a stunning purple haze that sways in the breeze.
- The "Indestructible" Landscape Solution: Stop replacing dead plants. This is widely considered one of the toughest perennials available. It thrives in the extremes—loving soggy soil in rain gardens and pond edges, yet equally capable of surviving severe drought and baking heat once established in a xeriscape.
- Eco-Friendly & Non-Invasive: Enjoy the beauty of the Mexican Petunia without the worry. 'Purple Showers' is a sterile cultivar, meaning it focuses all its energy on blooming rather than producing seeds. It won't take over your yard or spread unwanted seedlings like the wild species, making it a responsible choice for eco-conscious gardeners.
- Pollinator Haven & Deer Resistant: Create a wildlife sanctuary that pests ignore. The large purple trumpets are a favorite nectar source for Swallowtail butterflies and hummingbirds. Meanwhile, the tough, upright stems and foliage are deer-resistant, keeping your garden looking lush and uneaten.
Climate
NC State Extension lists USDA hardiness zones 8–10 for R. simplex. In colder climates it can be grown as an annual. This hardiness information is for this species, not the genus as a whole.
Support flowering and manage growth
In the NC State Extension profile, R. simplex blooms from summer into fall, although each flower is short-lived. Cutting stems back after flowering may encourage new flowers.

Plan for spread as part of routine care. The plant can spread by seed and rhizomes, so monitor for seedlings and growth beyond the intended area. NC State lists container and patio use, but a pot is not a guarantee of containment: rhizomes can escape through drainage openings, and seed can disperse.
Propagate only where planting is appropriate
Cuttings, division, and seed are listed propagation methods for R. simplex. Before multiplying or sharing it, check regional suitability and consider its ability to spread by seed and rhizomes. Propagating a plant does not make it suitable for a location where it is invasive.

For large infestations, seek local extension advice on management. See the UF/IFAS Extension guide to Mexican petunia for information on ecological impacts and control.
