To reduce snails in a garden, first confirm they are causing the damage, then remove hiding places, handpick or trap them regularly, and use a continuous copper barrier to protect a specific bed or planter. If those steps are not enough, consider bait only as a supplement and follow its label and local guidance—especially around pets, children, edible crops, and local wildlife.
Confirm snails are causing the damage
Leaf holes alone do not identify the culprit. Check plants after dark or near dawn, when snails are more likely to be active, and look for live snails and shiny slime trails. UC IPM’s home and landscape guidance, updated in March 2018, recommends inspecting during these active periods.
Make the garden less inviting
Snails hide in cool, damp places during the day. Where practical, remove weeds and unnecessary boards, stones, pots, and other debris near vulnerable plants. Water in the morning or use drip irrigation when appropriate so the soil surface is less persistently wet. These changes make the habitat less favorable, but do not guarantee that every snail will disappear. UC IPM cautions that bait alone is inadequate where shelter, food, and moisture remain plentiful.
Handpick and trap snails consistently
Handpicking
During nighttime or early-morning patrols, pick snails from plants and known hiding places and remove them in a way that is lawful and appropriate for your area. Repeated checks matter: a one-time collection may leave more snails or eggs behind.

- KILLS SLUGS & SNAILS: Slugs and snails begin to die within three to six days after bait is ingested.
- FOR LAWNS, GARDENS & GREENHOUSES: Use on the lawn or on the soil around any outdoor ornamentals, vegetable gardens, fruits, berries, citrus and crop plants where slug or snail control is needed.
- CONTAINS IRON PHOSPHATE: This bait contains a combination of iron phosphate, which is a plant nutrient that occurs in soils, with slug and snail bait additives.
- CAN BE USED AROUND PETS & WILDLIFE: Iron is an essential mineral for plants and animals, but large amounts are toxic to slugs and snails when ingested.
- FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: Always read the entire label and follow all directions and precautions.
Daytime refuge traps
Set a board on short runners, or use an overturned pot, as a sheltered daytime refuge. Check it daily and remove the snails you find. Beer traps can also catch mollusks, but they need routine checking and are not a substitute for reducing shelter and moisture. UC IPM describes both approaches in its snail and slug guidance.
Protect a bed or planter with a copper barrier
A copper barrier is most useful for excluding snails from a defined area, such as a raised bed or planter. Before closing the boundary, clear snails from inside. Install the copper as a continuous band, check for gaps, and maintain it if it tarnishes. UC IPM recommends a strip 4 to 6 inches wide; its Quick Tips guide describes burying it about an inch or attaching it around a raised-bed edge. Copper tape or foil can tarnish and lose effectiveness.

- Slug and snail bait kills slugs and snails in 3 to 6 days
- People and pets can enter the area immediately after slug bait is applied
- Slug and snail killer remains effective after rain
- Corrys slug and snail killer can be used on lawns, vegetable and fruit gardens, ornamentals, and more
- Snail killer for garden is also ideal for vegetable gardens, up to and including the day of harvest
Results can vary by region. In Florida, UF/IFAS notes that copper oxidizes quickly, which can limit its usefulness; its regional guidance also recommends identifying snails so beneficial species, such as rosy wolf snails, are not harmed.
Consider bait only when other steps are not enough
Snail baits are pesticides, and their active ingredients are not interchangeable. UC IPM describes iron phosphate as safer around dogs, children, birds, and other wildlife than metaldehyde. “Safer” is a comparison, not a guarantee that bait is harmless. Follow the exact product label, including directions for placement and use around edible plants, and prevent access by children and animals.

The National Pesticide Information Center warns that metaldehyde is very toxic to dogs and that bait may attract them. Read its snail-bait guidance for dog owners before choosing a product. UC IPM advises applying bait when mollusks are active and scattering it rather than piling it; keep habitat management in place instead of relying on bait alone.
A University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension guide dated June 8, 2024 reports that snails and slugs that eat iron phosphate often stop feeding and die within 3 to 6 days. That is the guide’s reported timing, not a guarantee for every product or garden.

Compare the main control options
| Option | Best suited to | Main limitation or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Habitat cleanup and moisture changes | Broad prevention and support for other controls | Requires maintenance and does not remove every snail. UC IPM, updated March 2018. |
| Handpicking and refuge traps | Small or accessible infestations | Must be repeated; check traps regularly. UC IPM, updated March 2018. |
| Copper barrier | Protecting a defined bed, planter, or suitable trunk | Must be continuous, the protected area should be cleared first, and upkeep and regional performance vary. UC IPM Quick Tips; UF/IFAS Florida guidance. |
| Iron phosphate bait | A supplement when other measures are insufficient | Still a pesticide; use only as the label allows and prevent access by children and animals. UC IPM, updated March 2018; NPIC. |
| Metaldehyde bait | Not a default household choice | NPIC warns it is very toxic to dogs; UC IPM also cautions about dogs and birds. NPIC; UC IPM. |
| Predatory decollate snail | Region-specific biological control in some agricultural contexts | Can threaten native species and is regionally restricted; seek local expert and regulatory guidance before considering it. Oregon State University. |
Account for local species and rules
Do not assume every snail is a pest or that an introduced predator is appropriate. UF/IFAS advises identifying snails in Florida to avoid harming beneficial species such as rosy wolf snails. Oregon State University warns that decollate snails can threaten native snails and slugs and are restricted from shipment to the Pacific Northwest. Check with your local Extension service or relevant regulator before introducing biological controls, and follow local pesticide rules and product labels.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- ORGANIC SLUG AND SNAIL CONTROL - Sluggo is one of the best snail and slug control products to protect your plants from snail and slug damage. Use in lawns, gardens, greenhouses, ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, berries, citrus and crop plants.
- FOR ORGANIC GARDENING – OMRI Listed for Organic Gardening. Organic Materials Review Institute reviews products to ensure it complies with all organic standards under the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP).
- PETS AND WILDLIFE FRIENDLY - Sluggo can be used around pets and wildlife. It contains iron phosphate, which naturally occurs soil, and attracts slugs and snails without being harmful to other animals.
- GRANULAR FORMULA – Scatter the slug and snail bait granules on the ground or near the plants to be protected. Can be applied using a standard broadcast spreader for large areas. For best results apply bait during the evening.
- EFFECTIVE AFTER RAIN - After application, rain or sprinkling will not change the effectiveness of the product on slugs, bugs, or snails. If heavy rainfall occurs, reapply to allow snails and slugs access to the bait.
