How to Grow and Care for Red Salvia (Salvia splendens)

Red salvia usually refers to scarlet sage, Salvia splendens. Give it full sun, fertile soil that stays reasonably moist but drains well, and wait until frost danger has passed before planting outdoors. Pinch young growth for a bushier plant and remove faded flower spikes to encourage more blooms.

Which plant is red salvia?

This guide is about scarlet sage (Salvia splendens), a red-flowered bedding plant. It is a tender perennial botanically, but in places where winter freezes prevent it surviving outdoors, it is commonly grown as an annual. It is not culinary sage, and its care should not be assumed to apply to other ornamental salvias. See the Royal Horticultural Society’s scarlet sage profile and the regional notes from University of Illinois Extension.

What growing conditions does red salvia need?

  • Light: Choose full sun for the best growth and flowering. Partial shade can be suitable, but flowering may be reduced. The University of Florida IFAS overview also discusses salvia in landscape settings.
  • Soil: Aim for fertile soil that holds some moisture while draining freely. Avoid ground or potting mix that remains waterlogged. The RHS summarizes the preference as: “Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained, soil in full sun.”
  • Water: Water after planting and during dry weather, especially while plants establish. Check containers regularly because their growing medium can dry faster than garden soil. Water when needed rather than following a fixed weekly schedule; conditions and containers vary.

When and how should you plant red salvia?

Wait until the risk of frost has passed before moving young plants outdoors. The right date depends on local climate, so use local frost timing rather than a single calendar date. For details on sowing and planting salvias, consult the RHS growing guide.

  1. Choose a sunny site or a container that can receive full sun.
  2. Prepare fertile soil or potting medium that drains well and does not stay saturated.
  3. Plant outdoors after frost danger has passed, then water the plant in.
  4. Keep an eye on moisture during establishment and dry spells, with more frequent checks for pots.

How do you grow red salvia from seed?

The RHS recommends sowing bedding salvias such as S. splendens under cover in pots or trays in early to mid-spring. Its species profile gives a spring sowing temperature of 15–18°C. Use the seed packet for cultivar-specific directions, then time outdoor planting for the end of local frost risk. A tray is optional; small pots also suit under-cover sowing.

How can you keep red salvia bushy and flowering?

Pinch young growth

While the plant is actively growing, pinch back young growth if you want a fuller, bushier shape.

Remove faded flower spikes

During flowering, cut or pinch off faded spikes. This helps encourage further flowering. Red salvia can bloom through summer and autumn according to the RHS profile; North Carolina State Extension describes flowering from summer to frost in its regional context.

Will red salvia survive winter?

That depends on local winter conditions and protection. In cold-winter areas, treat red salvia as an annual unless you can grow it in a suitable protected environment. Hardiness labels are regional: the RHS uses the UK H1C rating for the species, while North Carolina State Extension describes it as a tender perennial grown as an annual in North Carolina. Neither classification should be read as a universal guarantee for other climates.

What problems should you watch for?

The RHS lists slugs as a possible pest and powdery mildews, Verticillium wilt, and foot and root rots as possible diseases. These are potential problems, not evidence that red salvia commonly develops them. Good drainage and avoiding persistently wet soil help reduce the conditions associated with root and foot rots.

Choosing seeds or plants

If buying seed or bedding plants, check the label for cultivar identity, mature height and spread, local suitability, and its own sowing or planting directions. The available guidance does not establish one best cultivar or a controlled comparison among cultivars. Choose seed if you want to start plants under cover, or an established bedding plant if you prefer to transplant after frost danger has passed.
