Check the plant and the pot separately: roots in a container are more exposed to cold than roots in the ground, while porous pots can crack when water freezes inside them. Your safest choice depends on the plant, local winter conditions, pot material and size, drainage, and how sheltered the spot is.
First decide whether both the plant and the pot can stay outside
A plant that is hardy in the ground may not be hardy in an exposed pot. The smaller volume of soil around container roots can become much colder, and wind and exposure around your home affect conditions too. A hardiness zone describes average annual extreme minimum temperatures; it does not tell you the lowest temperature a particular site will reach.

Extension guidance varies by region. The University of Nevada, Reno Extension says a plant one zone below the local zone may be left outside in a large pot made of winter-tolerant material. The University of Illinois Extension offers a more conservative rule of thumb: choose perennials rated two zones colder than the local zone for outdoor pot overwintering. These are regional guides, not guarantees for every species, pot, or site. Check your plant’s needs against your local conditions.
Tender plants are a separate case. Insulating the pot does not make a tender plant winter-hardy; a sheltered garage or indoor location may be needed. If it must remain outdoors, survival may not be realistic.

Which pots are at risk of cracking?
Unglazed ceramic and terracotta are porous and can absorb water. When that water freezes, the pot may crack. North Carolina State University Extension advises against using unglazed ceramic pots for plants that remain outdoors in winter.
Wood and plastic can generally remain outside year-round, according to NC State Extension, but that does not necessarily protect the plant’s roots. Pot size, construction, drainage, and local conditions still matter. Illinois Extension notes that large concrete and wooden planters typically tolerate northern Illinois winters; that regional guidance should not be treated as a guarantee for every planter or climate.

How do I winterize planters I can’t bring inside?
For a sufficiently hardy plant in a winter-tolerant pot, reduce exposure and keep the root zone from drying out or sitting in excess water.
- Choose a sheltered position. Move pots close to the house or another protected spot, away from strong wind. Grouping pots can also reduce exposure.
- Insulate the pot. Options include a wire cage filled with leaves or straw, burlap, a frost blanket, bubble wrap, closed-cell foam, batting, insulation, or a blanket. If the insulation absorbs water, cover it so it does not become soaked. These methods reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that the root zone will stay unfrozen.
- Protect the soil surface. Mulch or straw over the soil can help moderate temperature and retain moisture. The right amount depends on the plant and conditions; there is no single layer thickness established here for all container plants.
- Check moisture and drainage periodically. Do not let an overwintering plant dry out completely, but do not leave the pot saturated. Clear blocked drainage holes and check for standing water. NC State advises checking soil moisture and watering dry containers when temperatures are above freezing.
UC Master Gardeners of Contra Costa County also recommends burlap, bubble wrap, and frost blankets for larger pots. Its guidance reflects that county’s regional conditions, so do not assume its cold-weather advice applies unchanged in a colder climate.

Can I leave terracotta pots outside in winter?
An empty terracotta pot is safer to store than to leave exposed to winter weather: remove soil and plants if you can, then store it upside-down. Porous terracotta can absorb water and crack when that water freezes.
If a heavy or fixed pot cannot be moved, shelter it and limit water collecting in it where possible. No universal outdoor storage method is established for every immovable pot, so the risk remains, especially in freeze-thaw conditions.

When should I bury a container instead?
If you have garden soil and can lift the pot, burying the container can insulate its roots with surrounding soil. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes this as one of the most reliable ways to overwinter container-grown plants. It is most relevant to unplanted container-grown trees, shrubs, and perennials; it is not a promise that every patio planter can safely remain exposed.

Burying pots takes digging and later removal. It also changes drainage: buried pots drain less readily, so they may need less supplemental irrigation. If you cannot bury a pot, grouping, sheltering, and insulating it are alternatives for plants and containers suited to outdoor overwintering.

When is leaving a planter outside the wrong choice?
Choose another plan if the plant is tender, the container is fragile and cannot be emptied or sheltered, or local cold is beyond what the plant and pot can tolerate. Container-grown roots may face single-digit temperatures above ground, according to Iowa State’s guidance for unplanted container-grown trees, shrubs, and perennials. For plants that cannot be protected adequately in place, a moderately cold unheated structure is one option; Iowa State gives a range of 20–45°F for that setting. That recommendation concerns those container-grown plants, not every planted patio pot.
