For a sofa throw, start with the coverage you need, then compare the fabric, feel, appearance and care instructions of the exact item. A 50 × 60-inch polyester fleece or microfiber throw is a practical starting point for shopping, not a guarantee of full-body coverage. If you want to cover a bed or stay under a blanket overnight, compare larger blankets instead.
Choose a size for how you will use it
A throw is a smaller covering for living spaces: it can add quick warmth or act as a decorative layer on a sofa, bed or accent chair. Ashley Furniture describes 50 × 60 inches as a common sofa-throw size, 40 × 50 inches as a smaller lap option and about 60 × 80 inches as an oversized option. These are retailer guidelines, not a formal sizing standard. Ashley Furniture

- Lap use: A smaller throw may be enough for one person seated in a chair.
- Sofa use: A 50 × 60-inch throw is a useful search starting point; check the listed dimensions against the coverage you want.
- Shared or bed use: Consider a larger blanket if you need more coverage than a living-room accent throw provides.
Retail listings illustrate why checking the product dimensions matters: Target lists its Sheridan Dama throw at 50 × 60 inches, while Best Buy lists the Surreal Entertainment Bob Ross throw at 45 × 60 inches. Target Best Buy
Compare fabric and construction, not just “soft” or “cozy”
Those words do not identify a particular fiber, construction or guaranteed warmth level. Listings in the examples include cotton, polyester fleece, microfiber, sherpa, chenille, faux fur and layered or knit designs. Read the material and construction details for the specific throw rather than assuming that similar-sounding descriptions mean the same thing.

- Polyester fleece or microfiber: A common starting point for shoppers looking for a soft sofa layer. Confirm the listed fiber content; product names alone may not tell you the full composition.
- Sherpa or plush: These describe particular textures or constructions in vendor listings, not a standardized warmth rating. L.L.Bean, for example, describes a polyester Wicked Plush Throw and a Cozy Sherpa Wearable Throw made as a hooded fleece wrap with pockets. L.L.Bean
- Cotton, chenille or faux fur: These offer different looks and feels. Ashley Furniture’s assortment includes these and other constructions, so compare the individual item’s description and care directions. Ashley Furniture
- Knit or layered designs: Sunday Citizen describes its Tulum Throw as oversized and double-knit, with two layers of its Snug fabric blend. Those are the vendor’s product descriptions, not independent comfort or performance findings. Sunday Citizen
Check the care label before buying
Care directions can differ between products, including throws made from similar materials. Target describes its Sheridan Dama polyester throw as machine washable; Best Buy recommends cold-water machine washing for its Bob Ross polyester fleece throw. Ashley Furniture’s assortment includes items with different directions, including spot cleaning and hand washing. Follow the instructions for the exact throw you choose rather than applying one listing’s care method to a whole fabric category. Target Best Buy Ashley Furniture
Before purchase, look for whether the item is machine washable, the recommended water temperature, and any instructions for drying, spot cleaning or hand washing. If you expect frequent use, easy care may matter as much as color or texture.

Balance warmth, weight and appearance
Consider whether the throw is mainly for staying warm while seated, adding a layer to a room, or doing both. Compare weight or loft only when the seller provides a description or specification; the examples do not establish a shared warmth scale or independent ranking.
