Crews shifted the 11,000-ton building 52 feet south, turned it 90 degrees, and moved it 100 feet west. The relocation took 31 days, and telephone business continued inside, according to the Indiana Historical Society and the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis.
Why did Indiana Bell move its headquarters?
Indiana Bell needed a larger headquarters by 1929. Rather than clear the site by demolishing the existing building, architects at Vonnegut, Bohn & Mueller proposed moving and turning the structure to make room for new construction. The original eight-story red-brick headquarters had been completed in 1907.

The replacement was a seven-story limestone headquarters, built in the space the old building vacated and completed in 1932, according to the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis.

How far did the building move?
The route was more than a straight westward shift. The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis describes it as 52 feet south, a 90-degree turn, and then 100 feet west. That combination of movement and rotation repositioned the old headquarters and cleared the footprint needed for the new building.

How did crews move an 11,000-ton building?
The Indiana Historical Society reports that the move began on October 14, 1930, and finished on November 15—a 31-day operation. Historical Society accounts, drawing on local newspaper reports, describe the 11,000-ton building being moved on rollers with T5-ton jacks monitored by 18 men. The jacks advanced the structure at 15 inches per hour.
Those figures describe a gradual, controlled relocation, not a single lift. The building was shifted along its planned route while crews monitored its progress. The Indiana Historical Society reports that the final placement was accurate to within one-sixty-fourth of an inch of the planned position.

How did telephone business continue during the move?
Indiana Bell kept operating by connecting heavily armored telephone cables with enough slack to accommodate the building’s movement. More than 500 long-distance circuits remained in use, according to the Indiana Historical Society. A steel walkway provided a way for people to enter and leave while the relocation was underway.

What happened to the old headquarters?
The original building still stands at 240 N Meridian St in Indianapolis, according to the Indiana Historical Society. The new limestone headquarters was completed in 1932 on the space made available by the move. Together, the two structures show the practical aim of the project: preserve the existing building while making room for a larger headquarters.
