Moonflower vine (Ipomoea alba) is a fast-growing, warm-season climber with large white, trumpet-shaped flowers that open at dusk, release their fragrance overnight, and close the following morning. Give it full sun, consistently moist but well-drained soil, a sturdy support installed before planting, and a long frost-free season. In most of the United States it is grown as an annual; in roughly USDA Zones 10–12, it may survive as a perennial.
One important clarification comes first: the name “moonflower” is also used for unrelated plants, including toxic Datura species. This guide is about Ipomoea alba, also called moonvine or tropical white morning glory.

Plan for the mature vine rather than the small seedling you put in the ground. A healthy plant can reach 10–15 feet in a single warm season and spread several feet sideways. Keep it away from narrow walkways, windows, gutters, small shrubs, and other plants that could be smothered. If you are building or attaching a support near a wall, fence, arbor, or other structure, make sure it is securely fixed and can carry a vigorous vine without pulling loose.
Install the support first
Put the trellis, fence support, arbor, pergola, or other climbing structure in place before planting. Moonflower twines around narrow members rather than gripping a surface with adhesive discs or tendrils. A sturdy garden trellis with reasonably narrow rails or wires gives the stems something they can wrap around.
A flimsy support that is adequate for a small annual may not be adequate once this vine reaches 10–15 feet. Give the plant room to climb vertically and spread laterally, and leave enough clearance for access, pruning, and end-of-season cleanup.

Seed is the standard way to start Ipomoea alba. The seeds have a hard outer coat, so untreated seed may germinate slowly or unevenly. Prepare each seed by lightly nicking or rubbing the coat, then soaking it in warm water overnight.
Scarify and soak the seed
- Hold the seed securely.
- Use a small file, fine sandpaper, or the edge of a suitable tool to weaken one small area of the outer coat.
- Stop as soon as you have roughed up the coat. Do not cut deeply into the seed or damage the embryo.
- Soak the prepared seed in warm water overnight.
- Sow it promptly in a clean, moist seed-starting medium.
A small file or a piece of fine sandpaper for seed starting is sufficient; a specialized scarification tool is not necessary. The objective is simply to help water penetrate the hard coat.
Starting seeds indoors
For the earliest possible flowers, sow indoors about 4–8 weeks before your local last spring frost date. The shorter four-to-six-week timing can work where the growing season warms quickly; six-to-eight weeks gives gardeners in cooler or shorter-season areas more time. Moonflower grows rapidly once conditions are warm, so avoid starting it so early that a large, tangled vine must wait indoors.
- Fill a clean seed-starting tray or small container with a quality seed-starting mix.
- Scarify and soak the seeds as described above.
- Sow them according to the depth indicated on the seed packet, using the prepared medium.
- Keep the medium evenly moist, not saturated.
- Provide warmth and bright light.
- Once seedlings have several true leaves and outdoor conditions are warm, harden them off gradually.
- Transplant after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. In many situations, waiting roughly one to two weeks after the last frost is safer than planting immediately on the calendar date.
An indoor propagation kit and seed-starting mix can make the process tidier, but neither is mandatory if you already have clean containers, suitable medium, warmth, and bright light. If a sunny window does not provide enough light, an indoor grow light for seedlings is an optional aid rather than a requirement for every gardener.

Direct sowing outdoors
Direct sowing is possible after the last frost, once the soil is warm. Prepare and soak the seeds first, then sow them near the support so the young vine does not have to be moved far once it begins climbing.
This method avoids transplanting, but it usually delays flowering compared with an indoor start. In a short or cool growing season, that lost time can be the difference between a plant that flowers abundantly and one that produces mostly foliage before frost.
Transplanting moonflower
Moonflower seedlings can become vigorous quickly, but they are more vulnerable to cold and root disturbance while young. Handle them carefully during transplanting and water them thoroughly afterward.

Watering and feeding
Keep the root zone evenly moist during germination, transplant establishment, hot weather, and flowering. Moonflower does not require constantly wet soil, and prolonged saturation is as undesirable as severe drying.
Check the soil rather than watering by a rigid calendar. If the surface is drying and the root zone is no longer evenly moist, water deeply enough to reach the roots. Container plants may need more frequent attention than plants in the ground because containers dry faster.
A fertile bed or quality container medium is often enough to support healthy growth. The plant is generally considered low maintenance, and a fixed fertilizer schedule is not essential. If a container-grown plant is clearly growing weakly, use a balanced fertilizer only according to its label directions and the needs of the potting medium. Avoid excessive nitrogen: it can encourage leaves and stems at the expense of flowers.
Training and pruning
As the stems lengthen, gently direct them onto the support. Because moonflower twines, it may need occasional redirection until it finds the trellis on its own. Check the vine regularly during its first period of rapid growth; early guidance is easier than trying to untangle a mature mass.
Prune for a clear purpose:
- Remove damaged or dead growth.
- Redirect stems that are entering walkways, gutters, windows, or neighboring plants.
- Cut back dead material after the outdoor season in regions where frost kills the vine.
There is no need for a hard annual pruning schedule when growing moonflower as an annual. In frost-free climates, prune to control placement and size rather than cutting the plant back automatically.

Growing moonflower in a container
Moonflower can grow in a large container or hanging basket if the container has drainage, the potting medium drains reliably, and the vine has a support. Container growing can help gardeners limit the plant’s spread or move it indoors temporarily before cold weather.
Choose a container large enough for a vigorous root system and provide a support that is anchored securely enough for a tall vine. A large planter with drainage is more useful than a shallow decorative pot that dries rapidly or remains waterlogged. Monitor moisture more closely than you would in a garden bed.
Container culture does not eliminate the plant’s need for light. Position it where it receives strong sunlight outdoors. If you are raising a young plant indoors, provide bright light and adequate ventilation, and remember that overwintering a full-sized vine indoors can be cumbersome.
When moonflower blooms
Flowering commonly begins in mid- to late summer and may continue into fall when the plant has warmth, moisture, and a long growing season. Exact timing varies with latitude, frost dates, sowing method, and local weather, so a precise bloom date cannot be promised.
The flowers typically open around dusk or in the evening, remain open overnight, and close the next morning. Their large white faces and strong fragrance make moonflower especially effective in an evening garden near a patio, seating area, or frequently used path—provided the vigorous vine has room to grow.
Night-flying moths, including sphinx or hummingbird moths, are important visitors and pollinators. Avoid treating the plant as a daytime-only ornamental: its main display begins when many other flowers are closing.
Saving moonflower seeds
After flowering declines in fall, the plant may put more energy into seed production. Leave the seed pods on the vine until they are fully mature. Immature seed is less useful for future sowing.
- Allow pods to mature fully on the plant.
- Harvest the mature pods and let them air-dry.
- Remove the seeds once the pods are dry.
- Place the seeds in a labeled container.
- Store them in a cool, dry place at room temperature.
Label the container with the plant name and collection year. Keep saved seed away from children and pets; the seed is not edible.

Overwintering: annual or perennial?
In roughly USDA Zones 10–12, depending on the local microclimate, Ipomoea alba may survive winter and behave as a perennial. In colder regions, frost generally ends the outdoor plant, and it is normally grown as an annual.
If you garden in a frost-free climate, cut back misplaced or dead growth as needed and protect the root zone from extremes. If you garden in a colder climate, collect mature seed before frost. You can also grow a container specimen and move it indoors before cold weather, but a large, established vine is often difficult to accommodate. For many temperate gardeners, saving seed or buying a fresh packet next season is simpler than overwintering the whole plant.
Pests and disease
Extension and botanical-garden references generally report no significant pest or disease problems for moonflower under ordinary garden conditions. That does not mean every plant in every location will remain problem-free.
Good basic conditions reduce avoidable stress:
- Use well-drained soil or a container with drainage holes.
- Give the vine enough space for airflow and growth.
- Avoid keeping foliage persistently wet.
- Remove damaged or dead material.
- Inspect the plant when watering so a local problem is noticed early.
Do not begin a routine pesticide program without identifying an actual pest or disease and confirming that treatment is appropriate for the plant and situation.
Moonflower safety: seeds and name confusion
Keep moonflower seeds, seed pods, and seed packets away from children and pets. The seeds contain indole alkaloids and can cause illness, including vomiting and possible hallucinations after substantial ingestion. Poison Control notes that morning-glory seeds can cause symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal upset to hallucinations, particularly when eaten in quantity. Morning glory species, including Ipomoea, are listed as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses by the ASPCA.
Do not describe the flowers or seeds as edible, and do not assume that every plant sold under the common name “moonflower” is Ipomoea alba. Datura and Brugmansia are different plants with different and potentially severe toxicity concerns.
If someone may have swallowed moonflower seeds in the United States, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or use the appropriate poison-center service. For a suspected pet exposure, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. Do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice.

Moonflower troubleshooting
Seeds do not germinate
- Likely causes: intact hard seed coat, cold soil, insufficient warmth, or a medium that dried out or stayed saturated.
- What to do: scarify lightly, soak overnight, sow into warm medium, and maintain even moisture without waterlogging.
The vine has leaves but few flowers
- Check sunlight: aim for at least six hours of direct light.
- Check temperature and season length: cool weather can delay flowering.
- Check sowing time: direct-sown plants may bloom later than indoor-started plants.
- Check fertilizer: excessive nitrogen can favor foliage over flowers.
- Check patience: flowering often begins in mid- to late summer rather than immediately after planting.
The plant is sprawling
Install or improve the trellis before growth accelerates. Guide young stems early and redirect them periodically. If the support is too short, weak, or broad for the twining stems, replace or supplement it rather than waiting for the mature vine to collapse.
The plant dies after one season
In most of the United States, this is normal. Moonflower is a tender perennial but is commonly grown as an annual outside warm hardiness zones. Save mature seed and start again next season, or move a container plant indoors before cold weather if you have the space and light to manage it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is moonflower the same as Datura?
No. This guide refers to Ipomoea alba, a twining vine in the morning-glory family. “Moonflower” is also used for Datura and other unrelated plants, so confirm the scientific name before buying or planting. Keep all seeds away from children and pets.

Moonflower grows quickly once the soil and weather are warm and can reach roughly 10–15 feet in one growing season. Flowering commonly begins in mid- to late summer, but timing depends on the local frost date, latitude, warmth, sowing method, and weather.
Should moonflower seeds be soaked before planting?
Yes. Lightly scarify the hard seed coat first, then soak the seed in warm water overnight. Scarification should weaken the coat without cutting into the embryo.
Can moonflower grow in a pot?
Yes. Use a large container with drainage, a well-drained potting medium, consistent moisture, and a support for the vine. Container plants may need more frequent watering and can be moved indoors before frost, although large vines are difficult to overwinter indoors.
Does moonflower come back every year?
It may survive as a perennial in roughly USDA Zones 10–12 or comparable frost-free microclimates. In colder regions it is normally killed by frost and grown as an annual.

The Bottom Line
For reliable moonflower, start Ipomoea alba seed in warmth, lightly scarify and soak it, provide full sun and evenly moist but well-drained soil, and install a strong trellis before the vine takes off. Expect a 10–15-foot climber, evening flowers in mid- to late summer, and annual replacement in most cold-winter climates. Handle the seeds as toxic and verify the scientific name so you do not confuse moonflower vine with Datura.
