“Joseph’s coat” can refer to several unrelated plants. This guide covers Alternanthera ficoidea, also called joyweed, calico plant, bloodleaf, copperleaf and parrot leaf. Check the botanical name on the label before following these care instructions; North Carolina State Extension lists several other plants that share the common name, including Alternanthera dentata and Amaranthus tricolor (North Carolina State Extension).
Joseph’s coat care at a glance
- Light: Full sun to partial shade. More sun often brings out stronger foliage color, but hot, intense summer sun can bleach leaves.
- Soil: Moisture-retentive, organically rich and well-drained. Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant is actively growing, but do not let it stay waterlogged. Water when conditions call for it rather than on a fixed calendar.
- Pruning: Pinch growing tips to encourage a compact, bushy plant; shear when you want a low, even carpet.
- Winter: It can be perennial in warm regions, but is generally treated as an outdoor annual where winters are colder. Move a potted plant indoors or take cuttings before frost.
What light does joyweed need?
Alternanthera ficoidea grows in full sun to partial shade. A sunnier position usually intensifies the foliage color, but strong sun combined with summer heat can bleach or dull the leaves. In a hot climate, give it partial shade—particularly protection from harsh afternoon sun. Indoors, choose a bright, sunny location. These recommendations are consistent with the North Carolina Botanical Garden profile and the Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder.
How to water and choose soil
Use soil that holds some moisture but drains freely. Keep the root zone from drying out for extended periods during active growth, while avoiding soggy soil. In containers, drainage holes are essential; empty any water that collects beneath the pot.
How often to water depends on rainfall, temperature, pot size and how quickly the soil drains. Check the soil and the plant instead of following a universal schedule. University of Georgia Extension horticulturist Paul A. Thomas advised, in guidance for the ‘Chartreuse’ cultivar, “Don’t be tempted to water every other day.” His article also recommends mulch to help maintain more even soil moisture (University of Georgia Extension, 2004).

Where to plant it and how far apart
Joyweed is grown for its colorful leaves, not its small, inconspicuous flowers. It can edge a bed, fill a container, form a groundcover or add color to a border. Spacing depends on the cultivar and whether you want a continuous carpet or distinct plants:
| Planting purpose | Spacing | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| Groundcover | 4–9 inches between plants | North Carolina State Extension and Missouri Botanical Garden recommendations for A. ficoidea; source year not stated. |
| Mass planting to shear together | 12 inches between plants | University of Georgia Extension advice for the ‘Chartreuse’ cultivar, published in 2004. |
| Individual ‘Chartreuse’ specimens | 18–24 inches between plants | University of Georgia Extension advice for plants intended to be viewed individually, published in 2004. |
Do not treat these measurements as interchangeable: the closer groundcover spacing aims for a carpet, while the wider ‘Chartreuse’ spacing allows individual specimens to show. Follow the spacing guidance for the cultivar you have when its label provides one.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
How to prune Joseph’s coat
Pinch the tips of actively growing stems to encourage branching and a fuller shape. For a formal bed or groundcover, shear the plants to maintain a low, uniform outline. In its 2004 advice for ‘Chartreuse’, University of Georgia Extension horticulturist Paul A. Thomas wrote, “Light pinching of the terminal shoot throughout the season will keep it compact.”
Can Joseph’s coat grow indoors or survive winter outdoors?
Yes, it can grow indoors in a bright, sunny spot. Outdoors, its winter survival depends on local temperatures. North Carolina State Extension lists A. ficoidea for USDA hardiness zones 10a–11b and describes it as a perennial that is also commonly used as a houseplant or annual groundcover. In colder regions, grow it outdoors as a tender annual or keep it in a container that can be brought inside before frost. A plant’s status as a perennial or annual therefore depends on the climate where it is grown, not a difference in care guidance.

To keep a plant through winter, bring the container indoors before frost or take tip cuttings in late summer and keep them indoors. Stem cuttings are also a listed propagation method during the growing season.
How to propagate Alternanthera ficoidea
Start from seed
The Missouri Botanical Garden recommends starting seed indoors in late winter and transplanting seedlings outdoors after the last frost. Seed-grown plants can vary considerably in foliage color. If a particular color matters, choose the seedlings you like best or start with a correctly labelled plant rather than assuming seed will reproduce a named cultivar exactly.

Take stem cuttings
Take tip cuttings in late summer to keep plants over winter, or use stem cuttings during the growing season. North Carolina State Extension, Missouri Botanical Garden and Singapore’s National Parks Board list stem cuttings as a propagation method. Their profiles do not establish a universal cutting length, rooting medium or rooting time, so follow instructions specific to the plant and conditions rather than relying on a guaranteed schedule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and a cultivar-specific caution
Serious widespread pest or disease problems are not identified in the cited plant profiles. Slugs, spider mites and caterpillars can occasionally appear. If leaves look pale or bleached, check whether the plant is exposed to intense sun and heat; if you see feeding damage or webbing, inspect for pests.
