Grow foxtail fern—Asparagus densiflorus ‘Myersii’ (also spelled ‘Meyersii’)—in bright light indoors or partial to full shade outdoors, with soil that drains well. Water to keep growth steady without leaving roots in soggy soil. Despite its fern-like plumes, it is an asparagus, not a true fern.
Identify a foxtail fern
Foxtail fern belongs to the asparagus family, Asparagaceae. Its fine, needle-like appearance comes from leaf-like branchlets rather than true fern leaves. The cultivar ‘Myersii’ forms dense, upright plumes; the Sprengeri type has longer, arching stems that tend to cascade. That difference makes foxtail fern a natural fit for containers and upright accents, while Sprengeri is often used where trailing growth can spread or hang.

Size descriptions vary: UF/IFAS lists a mature height of 1–2 feet and spread of 2–4 feet, while Wisconsin Extension describes the related spelling ‘Meyeri’ at roughly 1–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide. Treat these as approximate horticultural dimensions, not a promise of a particular plant’s final size. See the UF/IFAS cultivar profile and the Wisconsin Extension asparagus fern guide.

| Growing situation | Light | Soil and moisture | Seasonal handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor planting | Partial to full shade; avoid direct sun that can scorch foliage. | Use well-drained garden soil. The plant tolerates varied soil types, but wet ground risks root rot. | UF/IFAS lists USDA hardiness zones 9A–11B for the cultivar. It may die back in winter and regrow from roots, but that observation does not guarantee survival in every colder site. |
| Indoor container | Give it a bright position, with direct or bright indirect light; protect it from harsh, hot exposure. | Use a well-drained potting medium. Check the medium before watering rather than following a rigid calendar. | Bring seasonal outdoor plants inside before frost. In winter, keep indoor plants drier and stop fertilizing. |
The outdoor shade recommendation and indoor bright-light advice address different conditions. For indoor plants, Wisconsin Extension notes that brighter conditions support faster growth; Arkansas Extension also recommends bright light but cautions that summer heat and strong light can yellow plants. For outdoor landscape guidance, consult UF/IFAS; for container and indoor advice, see Wisconsin Extension and the University of Arkansas Extension plant profile.

Water and feed for healthy growth
Foxtail fern’s tuberous roots store water, so the plant tolerates some drying and short periods of neglect. Still, consistent moisture supports growth, and Arkansas Extension says uniformly moist pots produce the best growth. Water when the growing medium begins to dry rather than keeping it saturated. Outdoors, supplemental irrigation may be needed during drought.
If foliage yellows or drops, check both moisture and light before deciding what is wrong: soil that is too dry and inadequate light can each cause these symptoms. In winter, reduce watering for indoor plants and keep the medium on the drier side. Wisconsin Extension recommends resuming monthly fertilizing in spring for lush new growth; this is general asparagus-fern guidance, not a cultivar-specific fertilizer formula.

Prune and repot
Trim old growth
Cut old or yellowed stems off at the base. In spring, remove old growth to make room for new plumes. Use clean pruning shears and avoid contact with sap.
Recommended Free Tools
Move into a larger container when needed
Repot when roots have outgrown the container, preferably in early spring before new growth begins. Choose a sturdy pot with drainage: strong roots can outgrow and break pots. A general-purpose potting medium is suitable as long as excess water can drain away.

Propagate by division or seed
Divide tuberous roots in spring
- In spring, ease the plant from its pot or lift it from the ground.
- Separate the root mass into sections, keeping viable roots with each section.
- Plant each division in well-drained medium at its previous growing depth, then water it in without leaving it waterlogged.
UF/IFAS lists division of tubers as a propagation method, and Wisconsin Extension recommends spring division.
Start from seed
UF/IFAS also lists seed propagation. Wisconsin Extension’s general asparagus-fern instructions say seeds germinate in three to four weeks at room temperature and that soaking them overnight may help. That timing is a general guide, not a guarantee for every foxtail fern seed or cultivar.

Troubleshoot yellowing and pests
Check growing conditions first if plumes yellow or drop: assess whether the medium is too dry and whether the plant receives enough light. Avoid responding to every yellowing symptom by simply adding water, since persistently wet soil can damage roots.

Handle berries and sap carefully
Keep berries and plant material away from children and pets. UF/IFAS warns that ingestion may cause gastrointestinal issues and that sap may cause contact dermatitis; Wisconsin Extension specifically describes the berries as toxic to cats and dogs and notes possible skin irritation from contact. Wear gloves when pruning or dividing, wash exposed skin, and do not assume the plant is harmless because it is ornamental. The sources do not identify a specific toxic compound.
