To grow duckweed, transfer a small amount to shallow, quiet water in a contained vessel, then watch how it responds. It grows fastest when light, temperature, pH and nutrients suit the species and setup; because it can spread rapidly, routine harvesting and containment are essential. Do not release a culture into ponds or natural waterways.

How to start a small duckweed culture

  1. Choose a contained setup. Use a shallow tub or tray of quiet water where fronds can float at the surface. This is a practical home-scale adaptation of Texas A&M AquaPlant’s advice to transfer duckweed to shallow, quiet water in spring; the source does not report a specific container trial. The FAO cultivation chapter notes duckweed can grow in as little as 1 cm of water, but that is not a universal vessel-depth recommendation. Texas A&M AquaPlant; FAO cultivation chapter.
  2. Add a small amount of duckweed. Let the fronds float freely rather than packing them into a dense layer.
  3. Keep the water still or slowly moving. Duckweed grows in warm, nutrient-rich water with little movement, according to the RHS. RHS duckweed guidance.
  4. Observe before adjusting. Check whether the fronds remain healthy and begin spreading. Growth depends on several interacting conditions, so avoid treating a single temperature, pH or light setting as right for every species or culture.

What duckweed needs to grow

Light, temperature, pH, carbon dioxide and nutrient supply all affect growth. A 2021 peer-reviewed review recommends consistent light-dark and temperature conditions, along with periodic subculture, for small-scale cultures. For production or research, use a protocol designed for the particular species and purpose rather than relying on general home-care guidance. 2021 review of duckweed use and cultivation.

The FAO cultivation manual gives a pH range of 6–8 for the production-management context it describes. That range is not established as the optimum for every species or household setup. FAO cultivation chapter.

Do not fertilize pond water just to encourage duckweed

Duckweed takes up nutrients directly from water. Mississippi State University Extension discourages fertilizing waterbodies that contain duckweed. That advice concerns ponds and other waterbodies; it is distinct from deliberate nutrient management in a controlled production system, where additions need to be appropriate to the intended use. No single safe household fertilizer recipe is established here. Mississippi State University Extension; FAO cultivation chapter.

How fast duckweed grows—and when to harvest it

UF/IFAS Extension reports that duckweed can double its mass in less than two days under favorable conditions. This is a potential growth rate, not a promise for a home culture: actual growth varies with environmental conditions, species and setup. UF/IFAS Extension, posted April 21, 2021 and updated August 6, 2024; 2021 cultivation review.

Check the surface regularly and remove excess fronds before they form an unwanted dense mat. In a small culture, skim them with a fine net; in a larger setup, physical removal can include raking. Take the harvested plants out of the water: removing plant material also exports the nutrients held in it. Penn State Extension.

Keep duckweed contained and protect ponds

A contained culture is different from managing an outdoor pond. Duckweed can provide food and shelter for wildlife and take up nutrients, but extensive surface coverage can shade other aquatic plants and affect light and oxygen conditions. In ponds, Mississippi State University Extension warns that coverage of open water can contribute to oxygen depletion that may kill fish. Penn State Extension notes that overabundant duckweed and watermeal can block sunlight, while their decomposition can reduce dissolved oxygen. UF/IFAS Extension; Mississippi State University Extension; Penn State Extension.

  • Keep a home culture physically contained.
  • Do not discard duckweed into a pond, stream or wetland. Texas A&M warns that it can be invasive in quiet, nutrient-rich water. Check local invasive-species and aquatic-plant rules before any outdoor use. Texas A&M AquaPlant.
  • If you are managing a pond, focus on limiting excess nutrient inputs and controlling coverage rather than trying to establish duckweed. Penn State identifies runoff, septic systems and lawns as possible sources of excess nitrogen and phosphorus associated with overabundant aquatic growth. Penn State Extension.

Duckweed care differs by purpose

A small contained culture is appropriate for observing or maintaining a modest amount of duckweed. Feed production, wastewater treatment and other production uses require purpose-specific controls; their protocols should not be substituted for ordinary ornamental-pond guidance. 2021 cultivation review; FAO cultivation chapter.
