The best dish drainer is the one that fits your counter or sink, holds the dishes you actually wash, and directs water where you want it. Measure the space first, then choose between a countertop rack, a foldaway rack, or an over-the-sink design based on drainage, capacity, storage, and cleaning.
Compare the main dish drainer styles

These are tradeoffs, not guarantees. Confirm dimensions and features for the exact model and size you are considering. Measure the space before choosing a rack
Measure the usable surface or sink rather than relying on a product category or advertised capacity. For a countertop model, note its full footprint and the room needed for dishes to sit or for a spout to extend toward the sink. For an over-sink model, compare its support span with the sink and check faucet and cabinet clearance. If a rack folds or overhangs, account for the space it needs in both its open and stored positions.
- Measure the width and depth of the intended location.
- Check the rack’s height against upper cabinets and nearby fixtures.
- For over-sink designs, measure the supported span and identify where the rack will rest.
- Allow room to reach the faucet and use the sink as intended.
- Check whether the rack’s feet or supports can sit securely on your surfaces.
Choose a drainage route that suits your kitchen
Water management is a practical difference between designs. An over-sink rack lets drips fall into the basin, while a countertop rack may need a drainboard or a spout that directs water into the sink. Before choosing, check that the water has a clear route and will not spill onto the counter. A foldaway rack’s spout is useful only if it drains correctly in the position where you use it.

Match capacity to the dishes you wash
Plate counts do not tell the whole story. Consider whether the rack can hold your usual combination of plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, utensils, and cookware without crowding. Larger or awkward items may need more clearance than a rack’s headline capacity suggests. If you wash several dishes at once, check how items are spaced and whether loading one section blocks another.

Food Network Kitchen reports that it tested 11 racks of different materials, sizes, and styles in a review updated February 28, 2025. Its stated evaluation included capacity for dishes, glassware, mugs, and utensils, as well as drainage, space use, and ease of cleaning. That is the outlet’s test sample and method, not a measure of all dish racks. See its tested picks and methodology.
Consider material and cleaning together
Dish drainers stay wet and can collect residue, so look beyond the material name to how easily the parts can be cleaned. Check whether the tray, utensil holder, and other accessories detach, and follow the maker’s care instructions rather than assuming a part is dishwasher-safe. Food Network Kitchen identifies stainless steel, plastic, silicone, and coated metal as materials to consider, and advises checking whether components come apart for cleaning.

Its listing gives approximate dimensions of 14.6 × 10.2 × 5.9 inches for the small size and 17.3 × 11.8 × 5.9 inches for the large size; the drainer tray is sold separately. Food Network Kitchen’s 2025 review names the KitchenAid Full-Size Dish Rack as its best overall pick, the OXO Good Grips Foldaway Dish Rack for small households, and the Surpahs Over-the-Sink Dish Drying Rack as its over-sink selection. These are that publisher’s choices, not a universal or current ranking. The review says the OXO model’s legs and plate rack fold and its spout drains into the sink; it also advises measuring the sink for the Surpahs rack.
