Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), also called bachelor’s button, is an easy annual to grow from seed. Sow it directly in full sun, use well-drained average soil, keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge, and thin plants to about 12 inches apart. Once established, it needs little feeding and only moderate watering. Deadhead for more flowers, support tall stems if they lean, and leave only selected seedheads if you want controlled reseeding.

The plant usually grows 1–3 feet tall and may produce blue, pink, purple, or white flowers, depending on the cultivar. It is normally an annual—not a perennial—but it can return when fallen seed produces volunteer plants.

What is cornflower?

Cornflower is an annual member of the daisy family, Asteraceae. Its familiar blue flowers have made it a classic cottage-garden and cutting-garden plant, although modern cultivars may also be pink, purple, or white. Other common names include bachelor’s button and bluebottle.

The species is native to Europe and western Asia and is now widely distributed in the United States and southern Canada. It can reseed readily and naturalize, so it should not automatically be treated as a plant that will stay within its original bed. Check local weed or invasive-plant guidance if it begins spreading beyond the area where you want it.

Choose the right location

Give it full sun

Plant cornflower where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. It can tolerate light shade, but reduced light commonly produces taller, weaker stems that droop more readily and may flower less heavily. Full sun also helps create more compact plants and useful cut-flower stems.

Suitable locations include cottage-garden borders, informal beds, meadow-style plantings, wildlife gardens, cutting gardens, and containers. Because it is inexpensive and straightforward to grow from seed, it is particularly useful for filling a new bed or adding quick seasonal color.

Prioritize drainage over rich soil

Cornflower is not fussy about fertility. Average loam or sandy soil is generally adequate, and the plant can tolerate relatively poor ground. The important requirement is drainage: persistently wet soil can cause poor growth, root problems, and rots.

If the ground is heavy, improve its structure and drainage rather than trying to compensate with frequent fertilizer. A routine soil test is more useful than attempting to force a particular pH; cornflower tolerates acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions.

When to plant cornflower

Direct sowing outdoors

Direct sowing is normally the simplest and most reliable method. In a cold-winter climate, sow outdoors around your local last spring frost date, once the soil can be worked. Cornflower is a cool-season annual and can be sown relatively early.

There is no single correct calendar month for every garden. Spring sowing windows vary by climate; use your local frost date rather than copying a date from another region. In mild-winter areas, fall sowing may also work. A second spring sowing can extend the flowering season.

Starting seed indoors

Indoor starting is optional because cornflower transplants readily enough when handled carefully and is easy to sow outdoors. If earlier flowers are important, sow indoors about four to six weeks before planting out.

After seedlings emerge, provide strong light and avoid keeping the mix saturated. Harden the plants off gradually before transplanting: expose them to outdoor conditions over several days, beginning in a sheltered position and increasing their time outside. Set them out after they have adjusted to wind, sun, and outdoor temperatures.

For this optional method, a seed-starting tray and sterile or soilless seed-starting mix can make watering and transplanting easier, but neither is essential if you direct-sow.

How to sow cornflower seed

  1. Prepare the bed. Remove weeds and stones, then rake the surface into a fine, crumbly seedbed. Avoid working soil that is wet enough to smear or compact.
  2. Moisten the soil. If the bed is dry, water it before sowing so you do not have to wash shallow seed away afterward.
  3. Sow shallowly. Place seeds about ½ inch (12 mm) deep and cover them lightly. Deep burial is a common reason for poor emergence.
  4. Water gently. Keep the surface evenly moist while the seeds germinate and seedlings establish. Do not leave the bed waterlogged.
  5. Thin seedlings. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin crowded plants to about 12 inches (30 cm) apart. This spacing improves airflow and gives each plant room to branch and flower.
  6. Remove competing weeds. Young cornflowers are easily overtaken by weeds, so keep the bed clear while they are getting established.

Choose cornflower seeds or bachelor’s-button seeds identified as Centaurea cyanus. Cultivar height, color, and suitability for cutting can differ, so check the seed packet rather than assuming all forms grow identically.

Growing cornflower in containers

Cornflower grows well in a container with drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix. A sunny position is especially important because container plants in shade may become tall and floppy. Do not let the pot stand in a saucer of stagnant water.

Choose a container large enough for the mature height and spread of the selected cultivar. Tall forms may still need a discreet stake or support ring. Container plants can also dry out faster than plants in the ground, so check the mix regularly during hot, windy weather without watering automatically when the surface is already damp.

Watering and feeding

Water during establishment

Newly sown beds need consistent moisture because shallow seed and young roots dry quickly. Water whenever the surface begins to dry, using a gentle stream that does not displace the seed or erode the bed.

After establishment, cornflower has modest water needs and tolerates some drought. It will still benefit from watering during prolonged heat or severe dryness. Aim to prevent extended wilting, but avoid chronically wet soil. Water the soil rather than repeatedly wetting the foliage, particularly where airflow is poor.

Do not overfertilize

Routine heavy feeding is usually unnecessary in average soil. Excess fertility can encourage lush, lanky growth and make stems more likely to lean. Base fertilizer use on a soil test or a clearly identified deficiency rather than applying it automatically.

Support, deadheading, and general maintenance

Prevent floppy stems

Tall plants may lean in shade, exposed locations, or fertile soil. Thin seedlings properly, grow them in full sun, and add support before stems become difficult to manage. A low support ring, discreet stakes, or neighboring plants can hold stems upright without making the bed look heavily engineered.

If your plants are already leaning, carefully install plant support stakes or a flower-support ring and loosely guide stems into position. Avoid tying stems tightly, which can damage them as they move in the wind.

Deadhead for more flowers

Remove spent flowers regularly if you want a tidier display and a longer flowering period. Cutting flowers for arrangements serves the same purpose and may encourage additional blooms, although the response varies by cultivar and growing conditions.

Deadheading also reduces the amount of seed released into the garden. If you want seed for next year or food for birds, leave a few flowerheads to mature rather than allowing every plant to set seed.

Control reseeding deliberately

A practical compromise is to deadhead most plants and leave a small number of dry seedheads at the edge of the bed. Collect mature seedheads before they shed if you want to sow the seed in a chosen location. Pull unwanted volunteer seedlings while they are small, and consult local guidance if the plant is spreading beyond cultivated areas.

Flowering and harvesting cut flowers

Cornflower commonly flowers from late spring or early summer into summer. Exact timing depends on the sowing date, climate, and cultivar. In one climate, a spring sowing may flower from June into September; in another, the main season may be May through July. Treat those ranges as regional examples rather than fixed promises.

For cut flowers:

  1. Harvest when the buds are beginning to open or the flowers have just opened.
  2. Use clean, sharp snips to avoid crushing the stems.
  3. Remove foliage that would sit below the waterline.
  4. Place stems promptly into a clean container of water.
  5. Cut flowers regularly during the season and deadhead remaining spent blooms if you want to encourage continued display.

Cornflower is also useful in wildlife plantings. Its flowers attract butterflies and other pollinating insects, while mature seedheads can provide food for birds. If wildlife value is the priority, leave selected heads in place after flowering.

Pests and diseases

Cornflower is generally trouble-free, but aphids, mealybugs, wilt, rots, rust, and powdery mildew can occur. Start with prevention:

  • Grow plants in full sun where possible.
  • Provide the recommended spacing for airflow.
  • Use well-drained soil.
  • Avoid keeping foliage wet for long periods.
  • Inspect plants regularly so problems are noticed early.
  • Remove badly affected leaves or plants and dispose of them appropriately rather than leaving diseased material in the bed.

Do not treat an unidentified problem automatically. If a pesticide or other treatment becomes necessary, identify the pest or disease first, then follow the product label and local regulations. Many minor issues do not justify routine spraying.

Can you eat cornflower petals?

Properly grown bachelor’s-button petals are listed as edible by extension horticulture sources, but this comes with important limits. Eat only flowers that have been positively identified as Centaurea cyanus and grown without pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals not approved for edible crops.

Use the petals as a garnish rather than assuming the entire flower is pleasant to eat. Remove bitter or less desirable flower structures when preparing them. Never eat florist flowers or ornamental nursery plants unless you can verify their identity and edible growing conditions; flowers sold for bouquets are not automatically food-safe. Stop using them if an adverse reaction occurs.

Common problems and fixes

Why are my cornflowers tall and floppy?

The most likely causes are insufficient light, excessive fertility, crowding, or an exposed site. Move future sowings into fuller sun, thin seedlings to about 12 inches apart, avoid unnecessary fertilizer, and install a low support before plants mature. Shade is particularly associated with drooping stems.

Why have the seeds not emerged?

Check whether the seed was buried too deeply, the surface dried during germination, or the soil became crusted or waterlogged. Rake a fine seedbed, sow only about ½ inch deep, cover lightly, and keep the surface evenly moist. If the first sowing fails, reseed once conditions are corrected.

Why did the plants flower only briefly?

Deadhead spent blooms, harvest flowers frequently, and make a succession sowing in spring. If you leave every flowerhead to form seed, the display may finish sooner and the plant may spread more widely. Leave only selected heads for seed or birds.

Why is cornflower appearing in unwanted places?

The plant is reseeding. Remove spent heads before they release seed, pull volunteer seedlings while small, and avoid allowing every plant to mature seed. Where naturalization is a concern, check state or local extension or weed-management guidance.

A practical U.S. growing schedule

  • Late winter to early spring: Order seed, choose the planting site, and check your local last spring frost date.
  • Four to six weeks before planting out: Start a small indoor batch if you want earlier flowers.
  • Around the last spring frost: Direct-sow outdoors once the soil is workable. In mild-winter climates, consider fall sowing.
  • After emergence: Keep seedlings moist, weed the bed, and thin plants to approximately 12 inches apart.
  • Early growth: Add support before tall stems begin to lean.
  • Flowering: Cut blooms regularly and deadhead most spent flowers.
  • Late season: Leave selected seedheads for birds or controlled seed collection, then remove the rest to limit unwanted reseeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cornflower a perennial?

No. Cornflower, or Centaurea cyanus, is normally grown as an annual. It may appear year after year when it self-sows and volunteer seedlings emerge, but that does not make the individual plant a perennial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can cornflower grow in partial shade?

It can tolerate light shade, but full sun is better. Plants in too much shade are more likely to become tall, lean, and produce fewer flowers.

Should cornflower seed be covered?

Yes, but only lightly. Sow it about ½ inch (12 mm) deep and keep the surface evenly moist until seedlings emerge.

How far apart should cornflowers be planted?

Thin seedlings to about 12 inches (30 cm) apart. This gives plants room to develop and improves air circulation.

Can I grow cornflowers in pots?

Yes. Use a container with drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix, place it in full sun, and support tall cultivars if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest result, direct-sow cornflower in a sunny, well-drained bed around your local last spring frost date. Cover the seed lightly, keep it moist while it germinates, thin seedlings to 12 inches apart, and avoid excessive fertilizer. Deadhead most plants for a longer, tidier display, but reserve a few mature heads for birds or carefully controlled reseeding.
