Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) is one of the more forgiving houseplants, but it is not a no-care or no-light plant. Give it bright to low indirect light suited to its foliage, warm temperatures, a draining container, and water only after the top inch or two of mix dries. Green-leaved cultivars tolerate dimmer conditions; colorful and variegated cultivars generally need more indirect light to maintain vigor and color.

What “Chinese evergreen” means

Chinese evergreen is the common name used for a group of Aglaonema species and cultivars rather than one identical plant. The foliage may be solid green, silver-patterned, white-variegated, pink, or red. That variation affects the most important placement decision: how much light the plant needs.

  • Solid-green Aglaonema: usually the most tolerant of lower indoor light.
  • Variegated or colorful Aglaonema: generally performs better in low to moderate indirect light rather than a very dim corner.

“Low light” does not mean complete darkness or a windowless room. It means indirect or heavily filtered indoor light. Aglaonema should not receive strong direct sun on its leaves, which can bleach or scorch the foliage.

1. Choose the right light and location

Place the plant near a north-facing window, or set it back from a brighter window where it receives useful ambient light without direct rays falling on the foliage. The best position depends on the window, glazing, outdoor obstructions, season, latitude, and cultivar, so observe the plant rather than relying on an arbitrary distance from the glass.

  • Widely Used: This plant halo grow light also stylish decoration for any home space, and with color box. Suitable for all types of locations such as hangings, floor planters and more. the gardeners and plant lovers tending to their plants and vegetables.

Use the leaves and growth as feedback:

  • If leaves look pale, bleached, or scorched, reduce direct exposure and move the plant to more filtered light.
  • If a colorful cultivar is languishing or gradually losing its strongest coloration in a very dim spot, try a somewhat brighter indirect location.
  • Move a plant cautiously between substantially different light levels so it can adjust rather than being placed immediately in a much brighter position.

Keep the plant away from hot, unfiltered afternoon sun and from locations where it will be repeatedly brushed by cold air from a window or air conditioner.

2. Maintain warm, stable temperatures

Normal warm indoor conditions suit Chinese evergreen. Aim for approximately 68–80°F (20–27°C) when practical. Avoid cold windows, exterior doors, drafts, and direct blasts from air-conditioning equipment. Extension guidance identifies about 55°F (13°C) as a lower temperature to avoid; colder exposure can cause chilling injury, especially if the plant is exposed suddenly.

Average household humidity is usually adequate, although Aglaonema prefers moderate humidity and may develop brown edges in very dry air. Before assuming a nutrient deficiency or disease, check whether the plant is near a heating vent, air conditioner, draft, or other source of persistently dry air. Correcting the location is more useful than keeping the root zone constantly wet.

3. Use a porous, draining potting mix

Plant Chinese evergreen in a commercial soilless houseplant mix with organic material or humus and enough structure for air to reach the roots. The mix should hold some moisture and nutrients but drain excess water rather than staying muddy.

Dense products sold as ordinary “potting soil” may need loosening with a material such as perlite or vermiculite. Many artificial soilless mixes use combinations of peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. The exact ingredients matter less than the result: the root zone should be moist after watering, not compacted and continuously saturated.

Use a container with drainage holes. A decorative cachepot without a drainage opening can hold water against the roots even when the inner pot appears to have been watered normally.

When repotting or replacing a dense mix, an indoor plant potting mix is a practical category to look for. Choose a formulation intended for houseplants and assess whether it drains freely rather than assuming every bag has the same texture.

4. Water by checking the soil

Do not water Aglaonema on a fixed weekly calendar. Indoor light, temperature, pot size, root density, and the potting mix all change how quickly it dries.

  1. Push a finger into the mix and check the top inch or two.
  2. When that upper layer is dry, water thoroughly with room-temperature water.
  3. Allow excess water to run through the drainage holes.
  4. Empty water collected in a saucer or outer container instead of leaving the pot standing in it.

The goal is a root zone that is moist but not continuously soggy. Chinese evergreen can tolerate some drying between waterings, but it should not remain bone-dry for extended periods. The most important watering mistake to avoid is frequent watering into already wet, poorly draining mix.

5. Fertilize conservatively

Use a houseplant fertilizer according to its label and apply it with a light hand. Excess soluble fertilizer can accumulate as salts in the potting mix and cause brown or burned leaf margins and tips.

There is no universal fertilizer dose or schedule that fits every Aglaonema. Container size, fertilizer formulation, potting medium, water quality, light level, and growth rate all affect the appropriate amount. A program published for commercial interior plant maintenance should not automatically be treated as a household prescription.

If the plant is growing slowly in a dim location, adding more fertilizer is not necessarily the solution. First check light, watering, roots, temperature, and pests.

6. Keep the foliage clean and the plant full

Remove yellow or dead leaves with clean scissors or by carefully cutting the leaf stalk near its base. Wipe dusty leaves periodically with a damp, lint-free cloth. Clean foliage is easier to inspect for insects and damage, and removing dead material improves the plant’s appearance.

Flowers or berries may occasionally develop. If your priority is lush foliage, remove developing flowers or fruits; extension guidance indicates that this keeps the plant’s energy directed toward vegetative growth and can help it remain full. Routine pruning is otherwise not required.

Older plants can develop bare or leggy stems. You do not have to discard the plant. A leggy stem can be cut back, and the removed top or a suitable stem section can be rooted to produce another plant.

Repotting Chinese evergreen

Repot when the plant has outgrown its container or when the mix has become dense and difficult to wet evenly. Select a pot with drainage holes and only move up as much as necessary. A substantially oversized container can hold excess moisture around a relatively small root system.

  1. Prepare a clean draining container and fresh porous houseplant mix.
  2. Ease the plant from its old pot and inspect the root ball.
  3. Set it at approximately the same depth as before; do not bury the stem deeply.
  4. Fill around the roots with fresh mix without compressing it into a dense mass.
  5. Water thoroughly and allow the container to drain.
  6. Return the plant to indirect light and monitor the mix rather than watering again automatically.

If the plant has multiple rooted stems or a naturally divided clump, repotting is also an opportunity to separate the clump into smaller plants.

How to propagate Aglaonema

Chinese evergreen can be propagated by division or by stem and tip cuttings.

Division

During repotting, separate a clump into sections that each have roots and stems or growing points. Pot each division into a draining container with fresh mix. Avoid dividing a section that has no viable roots.

Stem or tip cuttings

A long, bare lower stem can be topped, with the healthy upper section used as a cutting. Use a clean, sharp tool and a clean rooting medium. Place the cutting in an appropriate moist but not saturated medium and keep it in warm, indirect light while it develops roots. Illinois Extension lists Chinese evergreen among plants suitable for stem-cutting and division propagation.

Propagation is also a useful way to recover a plant that has become leggy, provided the stem and foliage are healthy.

Chinese evergreen troubleshooting

What you see Check first What to do
Brown, dry-looking leaf edges Very dry air, a draft, or inconsistent watering Move the plant away from vents and drafts, check the mix, and keep watering consistent without making the soil soggy.
Yellowing, decline, or persistently wet mix Overwatering, poor drainage, or root damage Check drainage and roots before watering again. Replace persistently saturated mix if necessary and remove clearly damaged roots with a clean tool.
Pale, bleached, or scorched foliage Direct sun or excessive light Move the plant to indirect light and avoid abrupt exposure to strong sun.
Foliage damaged after a cold event Chilling exposure or a cold draft Move it to a stable warm location and protect it from further cold. Damaged tissue may not recover, but new growth can show whether the plant remains viable.
Burned leaf tips or margins after feeding Excess fertilizer or soluble-salt buildup Stop adding fertilizer temporarily, review the label rate, and avoid repeating heavy applications.
Insects, cottony patches, scale, or sticky residue Aphids, mealybugs, scale, or mites Isolate the plant, inspect leaf undersides and stems, and identify the pest before selecting a control.

A symptom does not always have one cause. For example, a yellow leaf may reflect age, excess water, poor drainage, unsuitable light, cold stress, or pests. Examine the whole situation—including the root zone, recent watering, temperature, light, and undersides of leaves—before changing several variables at once.

Is Chinese evergreen safe for pets?

No. Chinese evergreen is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. The ASPCA identifies insoluble calcium oxalates as the toxic principle. Chewing or ingesting the plant can cause oral irritation and pain, swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips, drooling, vomiting in dogs and cats, and difficulty swallowing; vomiting is not listed for horses in the ASPCA record.

Keep Aglaonema where pets and children cannot reach it. If a pet may have chewed or swallowed part of the plant, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate animal poison-control resource promptly. Do not wait for severe symptoms before seeking advice.

A simple care routine

  • At each watering check: feel the top inch or two of mix and inspect for standing water.
  • Weekly or as needed: look under leaves and along stems for pests, wipe dust from broad leaves, and check for drafts or direct sun.
  • When growth is active: fertilize only according to the product label and avoid compensating for low light with excess fertilizer.
  • When the plant becomes crowded or root-bound: repot into fresh porous mix or divide the clump.
  • Whenever foliage declines: check light, temperature, moisture, drainage, roots, and pests in that order rather than guessing from one symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Chinese evergreen grow in a dark room?

It tolerates low indoor light, especially green-leaved cultivars, but it cannot thrive in complete darkness. A room should still provide indirect ambient light. Variegated and colorful forms generally need more indirect light than solid-green forms.

How often should I water an Aglaonema?

There is no reliable universal schedule. Check the potting mix and water when the top inch or two is dry. Water thoroughly, let excess drain, and do not leave the root zone continuously soggy.

Why are my Chinese evergreen’s leaves turning yellow?

Check for overwatering and poor drainage first, but also inspect light, temperature, pests, and the root zone. Yellowing does not prove that overwatering is the only cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I mist Chinese evergreen leaves?

Misting is not required by the care guidance. If brown edges occur, first correct drafts, very dry air, and watering problems. Keeping the soil constantly wet is not a safe substitute for improving humidity.

Can I propagate Chinese evergreen from a cutting?

Yes. Aglaonema can be propagated from stem or tip cuttings, as well as by division. Use a clean sharp tool and clean rooting medium, and keep the cutting warm in indirect light while it roots.

The Bottom Line

For a healthy indoor Chinese evergreen, match light to the cultivar, keep it warm, use a draining porous mix, and water only after the surface layer dries. Green forms manage lower light; variegated forms need brighter indirect light. Watch the root zone more closely than the calendar, and keep this attractive plant away from pets.
