The most dependable natural way to reduce voles is to combine habitat cleanup with physical exclusion. Mow and thin dense cover, remove shelter around vulnerable plants, block access with 1/4-inch mesh, protect tree trunks, and use covered mouse snap traps when the population is small and localized. Repellents can be a supplement, but homemade remedies, ultrasonic devices, and frightening agents should not be treated as reliable cures.

Aim to reduce damage around valued plants rather than eliminate every vole. Voles are prolific, populations fluctuate, and they are part of the food chain. Start with identification and monitoring, then use the least intensive method that solves the actual problem.

First, make sure the pest is a vole

Voles are small, stocky rodents that are often mistaken for mice. Signs commonly include:

2 Packs Humane Live Mouse Rat Trap Rodent Chipmunk Traps Catch and Release
  • 【Suitable Size and Shape】: Humane rat trap size is 10.5* 5.5* 4.5 ". The outdoor mouse traps are cuboid, which is easy for rats to enter and ensures the best use of space. The squirrel trap is designed to reduce the incidence of capture errors and ensure that only the target rodent is captured.
  • 【Lightweight Galvanized Steel】: Designed for indoor use, these user-friendly mouse traps are made of lightweight galvanized steel, which ensures that the squirrel trap will not be damaged or deformed even if the trapped squirrel keeps trying to escape.
  • 【High Sensitivity Rat Trap】: This advanced mouse cage design ensures that all components fit together seamlessly to optimize the sensitivity of the trap. Once the animal steps on the pedal, the humane rat trap will react quickly and close the exit without harming the animal.
  • 【Reusable Mouse Traps】: Unlike disposable mouse cage or mouse sticky plates, our rat trap is designed for reuse. Usually, bait is placed in the cage to lure the rat. Once the rat is captured, it can be safely released elsewhere and then the trap can be set again to catch.
  • 【Indoor and Outdoor Use】: Whether you're catching rats in your kitchen, garden, or sewer, you can use this live trap to catch them humanely. These mouse traps are great at trapping small animals such as chipmunks, mice or other rodents.
  • Narrow surface runways through matted grass or ground cover
  • Small connected holes and shallow burrows
  • Spongy or disturbed soil near runways
  • Irregular gnaw marks at the base of trees and shrubs
  • Bark damage, especially near ground level or below winter snow cover

Do not assume every tunnel or mound is caused by voles. Pocket gophers are more associated with root feeding and soil mounds, while moles create different underground signs and primarily eat invertebrates. Rabbits usually leave cleaner, angled cuts on stems and branches. Mice may enter structures or leave different feeding and nesting evidence. Identification matters because a barrier or trap designed for voles may not address a mole, gopher, rabbit, or mouse problem.

Also assess whether intervention is justified. A few old holes or temporary lawn runways may not warrant aggressive control. Minnesota Extension notes that vole numbers in an average year may not justify control, and Oregon State Extension recommends matching the intensity of the response to the amount of damage.

8 natural ways to get rid of voles

1. Confirm the damage and monitor activity

Walk the property and look for fresh runways, newly disturbed soil, active holes, and recent gnawing. Check the base of young trees, fruit trees, shrubs, raised beds, and garden borders first. Mark or photograph existing damage so you can tell whether new damage is occurring.

If runways are no longer being used and no new bark or plant damage appears, monitoring may be all that is needed. If fresh damage continues, concentrate your efforts on the active area rather than treating the entire yard.

2. Mow grass and reduce dense ground cover

Voles rely on tall grass, weeds, and matted vegetation for both food and concealment. Mow regularly and manage grassy borders beside lawns, gardens, orchards, and ornamental plantings. Remove or thin ground cover that forms protected runways near plants you want to save.

The objective is not to make the entire property sterile. Create a less sheltered zone around vulnerable beds, tree trunks, shrubs, and garden edges. Close mowing and weed management are among the most durable ways to make an area less attractive to voles because they remove the cover that allows voles to travel unseen.

3. Remove litter, prunings, and excess shelter around plants

Clear piles of leaves, discarded branches, dense weeds, decaying vegetation, and other debris from the bases of trees and shrubs. Where practical, maintain a vegetation-free zone extending about 2 feet from tree trunks.

Gravel or crushed stone can provide a more open ground surface around trunks, but the important principles are removing protective cover and keeping mulch or debris from touching the trunk. Mulch is not universally a problem; a thick, damp layer immediately against a trunk can simply give voles a protected route to the bark. Keep the trunk base visible and avoid piling material against it.

4. Install 1/4-inch hardware cloth around beds and plants

Fine welded mesh is one of the clearest physical-exclusion options for vole damage. Use 1/4-inch hardware cloth or comparable welded wire around vulnerable trees, shrubs, garden beds, and other plantings. The openings must be small enough to prevent passage, and the bottom must be secured so voles cannot simply burrow underneath.

For young trees and shrubs, extension guidance commonly describes a barrier roughly 18 inches above ground and several inches below the soil surface. Leave enough space for trunk growth, keep the mesh from rubbing against the bark, and inspect it periodically for gaps, corrosion, or constriction.

For an in-ground garden bed, hardware cloth can be installed along the bottom of an excavated area before the soil is replaced. For a raised bed, attach the mesh beneath the bed before adding soil. Secure seams and edges carefully: a small opening can defeat an otherwise well-built barrier.

When shopping, look for 1/4-inch galvanized hardware cloth or welded mesh. The appropriate width and amount depend on the bed, tree, or perimeter being protected; do not confuse fine hardware cloth with larger-opening chicken wire, which may allow voles through.

5. Protect raised beds from below and crops from above

A raised bed is not automatically vole-proof. Voles can approach through the soil beneath it, so line the bottom with fine mesh when building or renovating the bed. Extend or secure the mesh at joints and corners to prevent an easy route around the barrier.

Floating row covers can provide additional above-ground protection for crops and may also exclude several other garden pests. They do a different job from bottom mesh: hardware cloth blocks burrowing access, while a row cover protects the crop from above.

Fasten row covers against wind and leave enough room for plant growth. Account for irrigation and pollination needs, and remove or manage the cover when the crop requires access from pollinators. A loose cover that lifts at the edges can create a new gap rather than solve the problem.

6. Use tree guards or mesh cylinders to prevent girdling

Voles can strip bark in irregular patterns and eventually girdle a trunk, particularly when snow or dense vegetation protects them from predators. Place a loose-fitting, light-colored tree guard or 1/4-inch mesh cylinder around vulnerable trunks.

The guard should:

  • Extend above the expected snow line where winter snow is a concern
  • Be buried several inches or otherwise secured to discourage digging beneath it
  • Remain loose enough to accommodate trunk growth
  • Stay clear of the bark enough to avoid rubbing and trapped moisture
  • Have no opening large enough for a vole to enter

Inspect guards during the growing season and after winter. A guard that becomes tight can injure the tree, while one that settles into the soil or collects debris can create an access gap. Remove, resize, or reposition it as the trunk grows.

7. Trap a small population with covered mouse snap traps

For a small, localized population, standard mouse-sized snap traps can reduce activity when placed on active runways or near tunnel openings. Set the trap perpendicular to the runway so a vole traveling along the path encounters it. Small amounts of rolled oats or peanut butter may be used as bait.

Trapping is practical for a small backyard problem, not for a large property or a major population surge. It works best alongside mowing, cover reduction, and barriers. If traps are not catching anything, reassess whether the runway is active, whether the trap is positioned correctly, and whether the animal is actually a vole.

8. Treat repellents as optional supplements

Some low-chemical or naturally derived repellents may discourage feeding or browsing in particular situations, but they should not be presented as guaranteed vole control. Capsaicin or hot-pepper products may be labeled for certain ornamental, fruit, or vegetable uses. Castor-oil products are sold for vole use in some contexts, although Colorado State Extension notes that their effectiveness is not known. Egg-water mixtures and predator odors may have limited, short-lived effects.

Rain, irrigation, and new plant growth can reduce any deterrent effect, so reapplication may be necessary. Always follow the product label, including the permitted crop, application rate, timing, and reentry instructions. Do not spray an unapproved homemade mixture on edible crops, and never apply a product to edible plant portions unless the label expressly allows it. If a label permits treatment, test a small area for plant injury as directed before treating more broadly.

Use repellents only after addressing cover and access. A repellent cannot compensate for dense shelter, an unprotected bed bottom, or a tree guard with a large gap.

A practical order of operations

  1. Identify the animal. Look for active vole runways, holes, and irregular bark gnawing.
  2. Measure the damage. Decide whether fresh damage is significant enough to justify control.
  3. Remove shelter. Mow grass, thin dense vegetation, and clear litter and prunings.
  4. Protect vulnerable plants. Install 1/4-inch mesh around beds and plantings, including beneath raised beds where possible.
  5. Guard trunks. Add a loose, buried mesh cylinder or tree guard where bark is being damaged.
  6. Trap localized activity. Place covered mouse snap traps across active runways.
  7. Monitor results. Look for new runways, fresh holes, and additional gnawing rather than relying only on whether you see a vole.
  8. Add a labeled repellent if necessary. Treat it as supplemental protection, not the main control method.

What does not reliably get rid of voles

Be cautious of internet remedies that promise a quick, permanent solution. Oregon State Extension reports that gadgets and homemade recipes have not been scientifically shown to work, while Penn State Extension reports that frightening agents are ineffective at reducing vole damage.

That means ultrasonic devices, frightening devices, chewing gum, kitty litter, predator-odor claims, and similar remedies should not replace exclusion, habitat modification, or properly managed trapping. Some odors may briefly alter activity, but a temporary change is not the same as reliable control.

Why rodenticide is not a “natural” solution

Rodenticides do not belong in the natural-solutions list. They are higher-risk, label-dependent products that can harm pets, children, predators, scavengers, and other wildlife through direct or secondary exposure. EPA states that consumer rodenticide products must be used in secured bait stations and according to their labels.

Some vole toxicants may also be restricted-use pesticides. If damage is severe, widespread, or threatening valuable trees, contact your local Extension office or a licensed pest-management professional before considering chemical control. Do not place loose bait outdoors or improvise a bait station.

When to call for help

Seek local advice when the damage is widespread, the animal cannot be identified confidently, trees are being girdled, or exclusion and habitat changes have not reduced fresh damage. A local expert can account for regional species, seasonal population changes, pesticide rules, and the presence of pets or wildlife.

For most residential problems, the best long-term combination is simple: reduce dense cover, keep shelter away from trunks, install properly fitted 1/4-inch mesh, and trap only the small active population that remains. These measures protect the plants that matter without promising an unrealistic, total eradication of voles from the surrounding landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most effective natural way to get rid of voles?

The most reliable natural methods are reducing dense grass and ground cover, clearing debris around plants, installing properly secured 1/4-inch hardware cloth, protecting trunks with mesh guards, and using covered mouse snap traps for a small localized population. Repellents may supplement these measures but are not dependable on their own.

What size mesh keeps voles out?

Use 1/4-inch hardware cloth or comparable welded mesh. For a tree or shrub, extend the barrier about 18 inches above ground and several inches below the soil where practical, while leaving room for growth. For raised beds, install mesh beneath the bed to block burrowing access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can voles get into raised beds?

Yes. A raised bed can still be reached from below. Line its bottom with fine mesh before adding soil, and secure corners and seams so voles cannot bypass the barrier. Row covers provide above-ground crop protection but do not replace bottom mesh.

Do mouse snap traps work on voles?

Covered mouse snap traps can work for a small, localized population. Place them perpendicular to active runways or near active tunnel openings, use a small amount of bait if needed, and protect the traps from children, pets, and non-target wildlife. Trapping alone is not practical for a large infestation.

Do ultrasonic devices and homemade vole remedies work?

There is no reliable basis for promising that ultrasonic devices, frightening agents, chewing gum, kitty litter, or other homemade internet remedies will eliminate voles. Some labeled repellents may provide short-term supplemental protection, but rain, irrigation, and plant growth can reduce their effect.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with identification, mowing, and cleanup. Use properly installed 1/4-inch mesh and tree guards to block access, then add covered mouse snap traps for a small active population. Repellents are optional and temporary; ultrasonic devices, homemade internet remedies, and loose rodenticide are not dependable or safe solutions.
