For most home gardens, start by confirming the insect and checking whether plants are actually under stress. Remove reachable lanternflies by hand, and in fall through spring scrape only positively identified egg masses from accessible surfaces, then crush or properly dispose of the eggs. Routine yard-wide spraying and homemade sprays are not recommended: they can harm beneficial organisms and are unlikely to reach all the moving insects.
First, confirm what you are seeing
Spotted lanternflies can be a nuisance in a residential landscape, but seeing them does not automatically mean a healthy ornamental plant needs chemical treatment. University of Maryland Extension says damage to landscape and garden plants generally does not justify routine insecticidal sprays; Penn State Extension likewise notes that a few lanternflies on a large, healthy tree are unlikely to cause permanent damage.

Check for actual plant stress and identify the insect before deciding what to do. If you are unsure, ask your local extension service for identification advice. This matters especially before removing tree-of-heaven, which can be confused with native sumac and black walnut.
Remove reachable insects without spraying the whole yard
In spring and summer, physically remove nymphs or adults you can safely reach. Options listed by University of Maryland Extension include hand removal into soapy water, crushing or stomping, a fly swatter, a water spray, or an optional shop vacuum. These methods reduce the insects you encounter; they do not eradicate lanternflies across a yard or neighborhood.

Do not climb trees or use a ladder to reach insects or egg masses high in the canopy. Many are beyond safe, practical reach.
Find and destroy egg masses from fall through spring
Egg masses are most useful to target before they hatch. Scout trees and outdoor surfaces from late summer into winter, then continue checking accessible surfaces through spring. Penn State Extension says egg deposition peaks in October and that an egg mass averages about 35 eggs; its egg-mass guidance gives a range of 30–50 eggs per mass. Timing varies by region.

- Confirm the mass. Lanternfly egg masses can look like a gray, mud-like coating. Do not scrape unidentified eggs from bark: other insects, including beneficial species, also lay eggs there.
- Scrape only what you can reach safely. Use a plastic card or plastic putty knife on accessible bark or hard surfaces.
- Kill or dispose of the eggs. Scraping alone is not enough. Crush the eggs thoroughly or collect them in an appropriate alcohol solution for disposal, following local guidance.
Eggs may be deposited on outdoor objects as well as trees. Hand-scraping cannot reach most masses laid high on trees: Penn State Extension reports that less than 2% of egg masses laid on trees were at reachable height in its management guide. Treat that figure as specific to the source’s observations, not a guarantee for every yard.
Consider traps only as a targeted option
University of Maryland Extension lists purchased or homemade circle traps as mechanical options. Sticky traps can also catch birds, squirrels, beneficial insects, and other animals; use a screen cover to reduce by-catch if using one. A trap may help capture insects locally, but it is not a guarantee of eliminating a neighborhood population.
Do not rely on tree-of-heaven removal alone
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is an invasive tree and a preferred lanternfly host. Before removing a suspected tree, identify it correctly: it resembles native sumac and black walnut. Penn State Extension says the success of tree-of-heaven removal as a way to control lanternfly populations has not been specifically evaluated and that removal may not consistently reduce their numbers. Follow local guidance for invasive-tree removal rather than assuming it will solve an infestation.

Should you spray spotted lanternflies?
Usually, no—not as a routine treatment for a home garden. University of Maryland Extension states that spotted lanternflies are mainly a residential nuisance and that landscape or garden plant damage generally does not justify routine insecticidal sprays. Broad applications can affect pollinators and other beneficial insects, while mobile lanternflies may simply be missed. Do not spray lawns; the extension notes that spotted lanternflies do not live in lawns.
Avoid vinegar, dish soap, and other homemade sprays. If a specific high-pressure situation leads you to consider a pesticide, use only a product whose label permits the intended pest, plant or site, and application method. Follow the label and check local restrictions; permissions and rules vary by jurisdiction. Choose the least-toxic method that will work.

Inspect items before moving them
Lanternflies and egg masses can hitchhike on outdoor furniture, vehicles, and equipment. Before moving these items from an infested or regulated area, inspect them, clean them, and scrape and dispose of any egg masses you find. Follow current quarantine and reporting instructions from your state agriculture department or other local authorities. USDA APHIS provides federal advice on inspecting outdoor items: Spotted lanternfly guidance.

Physical removal is most useful for insects and egg masses within safe reach. It can reduce what is present on particular plants or surfaces, but it cannot reliably eliminate lanternflies arriving from nearby areas, and much of the egg mass population may be high in trees. Focus on correct identification, selective removal, protecting non-target wildlife, and preventing accidental transport.

For local timing, quarantine rules, reporting requirements, and pesticide permissions, consult your state agriculture department or local extension service. Penn State notes one generation per year in Pennsylvania, with eggs laid in fall and hatching in spring; that seasonal pattern should not be assumed to apply identically everywhere.
