To get skunk smell out of a house, first remove the source—such as contaminated clothing or an affected pet—then clean washable, compatible surfaces with a fresh solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and liquid dish detergent. For surfaces that cannot be washed, use a skunk-odor product specifically labeled for that material; ventilate the area while you work. The peroxide mixture can bleach, so spot-test it and do not use it on delicate or color-sensitive materials unless they are confirmed compatible.
1. Stop the odor from spreading
Skunk spray is oily and contains sulfur-bearing compounds, so an affected item or pet can keep transferring odor around the house. Skunk spray can also severely irritate eyes, according to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program.
- Keep contaminated clothing or belongings apart from clean items and furnishings until you can treat them.
- If a pet was sprayed, keep it away from upholstered furniture and other indoor surfaces until it has been cleaned.
- Do not put building odor neutralizers on people or pets. UC IPM specifically cautions against using neutroleum-alpha on either; ask a veterinarian for current pet-cleaning advice.
2. Choose a method that fits the surface
There is no single treatment established as safe for every household material. Check whether the affected area can be washed and whether the cleaning product is compatible with its finish or fabric.

3. Clean compatible washable surfaces with a fresh mixture
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1–2 teaspoons of liquid dish detergent for skunk odor. The quantities come from its skunk damage management guidance.

- Check the surface care instructions and test the mixture on a hidden spot. Let the test area dry enough to check for color change or damage before treating a visible area.
- In an open container, mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1–2 teaspoons of liquid dish detergent.
- Use the solution immediately on compatible washable surfaces, keeping it away from eyes and mouths.
- Do not store leftover mixture in a sealed bottle. The mixture is unstable after mixing, and hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics and other materials.
Avoid using this mixture on delicate or color-sensitive surfaces unless the material’s manufacturer confirms compatibility. If uncertain, use a product labeled for the exact surface instead.
4. Treat carpet, upholstery and other non-washable surfaces carefully
Commercial products are available for skunk odor, including sprays and some formulations labeled for carpets or furniture. The Missouri Department of Conservation guide discusses such products; use only one whose label covers both skunk odor and the affected material. Follow the directions for application and ventilation. Do not assume a product intended for carpet is suitable for upholstery, wood finishes or other surfaces.

People with respiratory problems may react to deodorizing chemicals. Consider occupants’ sensitivities when selecting a product, and follow its label precautions.
5. Ventilate when the source cannot be washed away
If the odor is in an area or on an item that cannot be washed, open windows when conditions allow and use fans to improve air circulation. Montana State University Extension describes ventilation and fans as options when skunk discharge cannot be washed away in its non-chemical skunk control guidance. Ventilation can help clear indoor air, but it does not substitute for removing or treating the odorous source.

6. Know when to get help
Consider contacting a local professional wildlife-control or odor-cleanup service if contamination is extensive or out of reach, or if you cannot identify and safely treat the source. If a pet was sprayed, consult a veterinarian for animal-specific cleaning recommendations; building neutralizers are not pet treatments.
