Spraying one room may provide temporary relief, but it will not solve the problem if mosquitoes can still enter or reproduce nearby.
What to do first when mosquitoes are already inside
- Close exterior doors and windows. Do not leave garage, patio, or back doors propped open.
- Remove visible adults. Use a vacuum on mosquitoes resting on walls, ceilings, curtains, window coverings, and corners. Empty the vacuum container or dispose of the bag afterward.
- Inspect dark, humid areas. Check under sinks, in showers, closets, laundry rooms, beneath furniture, and other places where mosquitoes may rest.
- Look for water indoors and outdoors. A mosquito problem can continue because of a vase, plant saucer, bucket, toy, birdbath, clogged container, or other small water source.
- Protect people from bites. Use an appropriate EPA-registered repellent and, where needed, a properly installed mosquito net while you correct the underlying problem.
Vacuuming is an immediate removal tactic, not long-term control. The lasting solution is exclusion plus removal of breeding sites.

1. Stop mosquitoes from getting into the house
Walk around the home and inspect every potential opening, especially the rooms where mosquitoes are most often seen. Pay particular attention to:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Window screens with holes, loose edges, or damaged frames
- Screen doors that do not close tightly
- Gaps beneath exterior doors
- Open garage doors and connecting doors
- Gaps around pipes, vents, utility penetrations, and poorly sealed windows
- Windows that are left open without intact screens
Repair or replace damaged screens and make sure screen doors close fully. If you find small tears, a window screen repair kit can be a practical fix; larger damage or loose frames may require replacement rather than patching.
Keep exterior and garage doors closed whenever possible. Air conditioning also helps reduce the need to keep windows open. If a door has a visible gap at the bottom, install or replace the door sweep after confirming that it still allows the door to open and close correctly.
2. Remove every possible breeding site
Mosquitoes need water to reproduce, and even a small amount can be relevant. Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or discard anything that holds water. Check both inside and outside the home.

- Area Coverage up to 1/2 Acre. Good for home, patio, balcony, courtyard, front porch, garden, pergola, deck, backyard, camping, swimming pool, garage, farm, etc.
| Area | What to inspect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen and living areas | Vases, plant saucers, pet bowls, appliance drip trays, and forgotten containers | Empty and scrub them regularly; change pet water frequently |
| Laundry and utility areas | Buckets, floor drains, mop containers, humid areas, and water leaks | Empty containers, correct leaks, and keep areas dry |
| Garage and storage areas | Tires, tools, bins, toys, tarps, and containers | Turn items over, store them under cover, or discard them |
| Yard and patio | Birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, children’s toys, trash containers, gutters, and low spots | Dump and scrub weekly; improve drainage where water remains |
| Water storage | Rain barrels, tanks, and other containers that cannot be emptied | Seal them tightly or use mesh with openings smaller than an adult mosquito |
| Pools and decorative water | Unused pools, fountains, and other water features | Maintain them properly or drain and cover them |
Indoor containers matter. Mosquitoes can enter from outside and lay eggs in water inside the home, so checking only the yard may leave the source untouched.
For outdoor water that cannot be dumped or covered, use a larvicide only if the product is specifically labeled for that situation. Follow the current label exactly, including instructions about where the product may be used, dosage, pets, wildlife, and water intended for people or animals.
3. Find where indoor mosquitoes are hiding
Mosquitoes commonly rest in dark, humid, sheltered locations during inactive periods. Inspect:
- Under sinks and inside cabinets
- Bathrooms and showers
- Closets and behind hanging clothing
- Laundry rooms
- Under beds, sofas, and other furniture
- Behind curtains and near wall corners
- Near houseplants and containers that may stay damp
A flashlight can help reveal adults resting in shaded areas. If mosquitoes repeatedly appear in one room, compare that room with the rest of the house: it may have a damaged screen, a damp utility area, an open door nearby, or a water-holding container.
4. Use an indoor insecticide only when necessary
If mosquitoes remain after you repair screens, close openings, and remove standing water, an indoor insecticide may be appropriate. Choose only a product whose label specifically permits indoor use and mosquito control. Read the entire label before application and follow it without improvising.
Indoor sprays and foggers can kill mosquitoes quickly, but they may require reapplication and do not prevent new mosquitoes from entering. Insecticide alone is not a substitute for exclusion and water-source control.

Safety rules for total-release foggers
If you use a total-release fogger, follow the product label and take the precautions required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:
- Remove children, pets, toys, and uncovered food from the treatment area.
- Leave the treated area immediately after activating the fogger.
- Stay out for the period specified on the label, commonly two to four hours.
- Ventilate the area thoroughly before reoccupying it.
- Keep foggers away from flames, pilot lights, electrical sparks, and other ignition sources.
- Use no more foggers than the label allows for the room size.
Never use an outdoor-only mosquito mister or outdoor spatial repellent inside the house. Stationary and wearable spatial repellents are generally intended for outdoor use unless their label specifically authorizes indoor application.
Do not apply permethrin or another insecticide directly to skin unless the particular product is specifically labeled for that use. Permethrin-treated clothing and gear are different from liquid or aerosol insecticides intended for surfaces.

5. Use a trap as a supplement, not the main solution
An indoor trap may capture some adult mosquitoes after they enter. For example, the indoor mosquito trap category includes devices that use combinations of UV light, a fan, and a glue board to catch mosquitoes and other small flying insects.
A trap does not seal a window, remove standing water, or eliminate eggs and larvae. Place it only as a supplementary measure after checking screens and water sources. Treat marketing claims cautiously: household traps should not be presented as a guaranteed way to eliminate an infestation.
6. Protect people from bites while you fix the source
EPA-registered skin repellents
For temporary protection, choose an EPA-registered mosquito repellent containing an active ingredient such as:
- DEET
- Picaridin
- IR3535
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD
- 2-undecanone
Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent exactly as directed on its label. EPA-registered repellents are considered safe and effective when used according to the label, including for pregnant and breastfeeding people.

- BACKYARD MOSQUITO PROTECTION: Use the mosquito killer outdoors on the ground in a level shaded location near bushes, trees, or other secluded areas of your yard for lasting defense that keeps working and reduces the amount of mosquitoes over time
- OUTDOOR MOSQUITO CONTROL: Stops the breeding cycle at its source by using technology backed by scientific research to mimic natural mosquito breeding sites to lure mosquitoes in through a contained and targeted approach (Aedes and Culex spp)
- KILL & PREVENT: Kill adult mosquitoes in 9 days and their larvae in the station and other places they lay eggs, preventing new mosquitoes from developing; provides more comprehensive control than traps, repellents, or repellers (Aedes and Culex spp)
- HASSLE-FREE AND EASY TO USE: Quiet and effective mosquito control without flames, sprays, or batteries - just set-up per directions using a refill band and water, replace the band every 30 days, and check water level periodically to refill as needed
- LARGE PROTECTION ZONE: Ortho Home Defense Mosquito Kill & Prevent protects up to 4,300 sq. ft. against mosquitoes and larvae (Aedes and Culex spp)
For children:
- Do not apply repellent to the hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin.
- An adult should apply repellent to their own hands before applying it to a child’s face.
- Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on children under 3 years old.
- Follow the product’s age restrictions and reapplication instructions.
“Natural” does not automatically mean effective. The effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents may not be known, and some minimum-risk ingredients are exempt from registration without having been evaluated by EPA for effectiveness.
Mosquito nets
If a screened or air-conditioned sleeping area is unavailable, a mosquito net can provide a temporary physical barrier, particularly for sleeping areas, travel, or short-term situations.
Tuck the net securely under the mattress or crib mattress, inspect it for holes, and prevent it from sagging against the sleeper. Mosquitoes may bite through netting that rests directly against skin. A net protects the person beneath it; it does not remove mosquitoes from the room or correct the breeding source.
Why ultrasonic mosquito devices and home remedies are weak bets
Ultrasonic or sound-based mosquito devices should not be treated as proven control. The EPA says these sound-wave devices are not registered as insect repellents and that it has no safety or effectiveness data establishing that they work against mosquitoes.
Likewise, a remedy is not reliable simply because it is labeled natural, herbal, or chemical-free. If a product makes a pest-control claim, check its label, intended location, active ingredients, and applicable registration or exemption information. Do not replace proven measures—screens, closed doors, water removal, and properly labeled products—with an unverified device or homemade mixture.

A practical seven-day mosquito-control checklist
- Day 1: Close doors and windows, vacuum visible mosquitoes, and inspect the room where activity is highest.
- Day 1: Check screens, screen doors, door sweeps, garage doors, and other openings.
- Day 1: Empty indoor vases, plant saucers, buckets, pet-water containers, and other water-holding items.
- Day 1: Walk the yard, garage, patio, and storage areas to find tires, toys, containers, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and other standing water.
- Days 2–7: Keep exterior doors closed, repair openings, and monitor the room where mosquitoes were first noticed.
- After the inspection: Consider a labeled indoor insecticide only if mosquitoes continue and it can be used safely and legally indoors.
- At night and during activity: Use an EPA-registered repellent or a properly fitted mosquito net for bite protection.
- After one week: Repeat the water inspection. Continue the weekly routine because containers can refill after rain, cleaning, or ordinary household activity.
When to call a pest-control professional
Contact a licensed pest-control professional when:
- Mosquitoes continue appearing after screens are repaired and standing water is removed.
- You cannot locate the breeding source.
- The source may be inaccessible, such as a concealed drain, crawlspace, wall void, roof area, or neighboring property.
- Someone in the household cannot safely use pesticides.
- You are uncertain which treatment is legal and appropriate for the building.
For U.S. homeowners, look for a professional who is licensed in the relevant state or locality. Check credentials, insurance where applicable, treatment methods, and whether the company has relevant professional-association membership. A directory such as the National Pest Management Association’s local-service listings may help identify providers, but licensing should still be verified with the appropriate state or local authority.
Ask the professional to explain what is attracting or allowing mosquitoes into the home, what areas will be treated, what occupants must do before and after treatment, and how follow-up will be handled. A treatment that does not address entry points or standing water may provide only short-term relief.
When mosquito exposure may require medical advice
Mosquitoes bite during both the day and night, depending on the species. Some mosquitoes can spread germs that cause illnesses including West Nile virus, dengue, Zika, and malaria. Most bites cause local itching and swelling, but mosquito-borne illness cannot be diagnosed from a bite alone.
After mosquito exposure, contact a healthcare professional or local public-health authority if someone develops concerning symptoms such as fever, severe headache, rash, breathing difficulty, unusual weakness, confusion, or symptoms that are severe, persistent, or worsening. Seek urgent care for a serious allergic reaction or trouble breathing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will killing the mosquitoes I can see solve the problem?
Usually not. Vacuuming or a labeled indoor spray can remove adult mosquitoes, but new adults may continue to enter through screens and doors or emerge after breeding in standing water. Exclusion and weekly water-source checks are the long-term controls.

Can mosquitoes breed inside a house?
Yes. They can lay eggs in indoor water-holding containers such as vases, plant saucers, buckets, pet-water containers, and appliance trays. Inspect indoors as well as the yard, garage, and patio.
Are ultrasonic mosquito repellers effective?
They should not be treated as proven control. The EPA says sound-wave devices are not registered as insect repellents and that it has no safety or effectiveness data establishing their effectiveness against mosquitoes.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use an outdoor mosquito fogger inside?
No, unless the product label specifically authorizes indoor use. Outdoor-only misters and spatial repellents are not automatically safe or legal to use inside a home.
How long should I stay out after using a fogger?
Follow the product label. EPA guidance says the specified period is commonly two to four hours, followed by thorough ventilation before people and pets return. Remove children, pets, toys, and uncovered food, and keep the fogger away from ignition sources.
What is the best way to protect a baby from indoor mosquitoes?
Use intact window and door screens, close openings, remove standing water, and use a properly fitted mosquito net where appropriate. Do not apply repellent to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin, and do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD products on children under 3.
The Bottom Line
The dependable fix is not a single spray or gadget. Repair screens and door gaps, keep doors closed, remove or cover standing water every week, vacuum visible adults, and use labeled repellents or insecticides only when appropriate. If mosquitoes persist after those steps, or the source cannot be found or treated safely, bring in a licensed pest-control professional.
