The dependable way to get rid of fruit flies is to remove the place where they are breeding. A vinegar trap may catch adult flies, but it will not solve the problem if overripe produce, recycling residue, a garbage disposal, or organic buildup inside a drain is still supporting new generations.
Start with a source inspection, clean the likely breeding sites, then use traps to monitor whether activity is falling. If the flies are fuzzy, concentrated around a drain, or returning despite thorough cleaning, you may be dealing with drain flies—or a plumbing problem—rather than ordinary fruit flies.

First, make sure they are fruit flies
Common kitchen fruit flies, also called vinegar or pomace flies, are very small—usually about 2–3 millimeters long—with yellowish-brown to brown bodies and often red eyes. Their larvae develop in damaged, fermenting, or overripe fruit and other damp organic material.

| What you may see | Likely insect | Typical breeding source |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny tan or brown flies around fruit, recycling, wine, beer, or trash | Fruit or vinegar flies | Fermenting produce, spilled beverages, food residue, garbage, recycling, or damp organic waste |
| Fuzzy-looking gray flies repeatedly emerging near a sink, shower, bathroom, or floor drain | Drain or moth flies | Gelatinous organic film inside drains, traps, overflow channels, or floor drains |
| Small dark flies hovering around houseplants | Fungus gnats | Moist potting soil rather than kitchen food waste |
A vinegar trap can help catch adult fruit flies, but it will not remove a drain-fly breeding site, dry out wet potting soil, or repair a leaking pipe. If the flies are consistently coming from one drain, temporarily cover that drain opening with clear tape or an inverted container overnight. Emerging flies can help identify the active drain; do not permanently seal a drain that needs to remain ventilated or used.
The exterminator’s source-first inspection
Walk through the kitchen methodically. Do not stop after checking the fruit bowl. A small amount of fermenting residue in an overlooked location can keep the infestation going.
Check food, waste, and hidden spills
- Fruit and vegetables: Inspect the fruit bowl, potatoes, onions, and pantry corners. Discard anything soft, leaking, fermenting, or moldy.
- Refrigerator area: Look for spilled juice, a dirty drip area, residue beneath drawers, or food trapped under and behind the appliance.
- Trash and compost: Empty indoor food waste, compost containers, and trash. Tie the bag and take it outside rather than leaving it in the kitchen.
- Recycling: Rinse bottles, cans, and jars, especially those that held wine, beer, soda, juice, syrup, or other sweet liquids. Clean sticky residue from the bottom and sides of the recycling bin.
- Under and behind appliances: Inspect beneath the refrigerator, dishwasher, range, toaster, and small appliances for old spills or damp food debris.
- Cabinets and floors: Check cabinet edges, toe-kicks, corners, and the floor beneath the trash can. A hidden spill can be more important than a clean countertop.
Wash or wipe the counter, backsplash, cabinet edges, appliance handles, and floor around the suspected source with hot, soapy water. Keep ripe fruit refrigerated or in sealed containers while the problem is being controlled. Perishable food and cut fruit should be refrigerated promptly, and food-contact surfaces should be washed with hot, soapy water.

- the drain opening and drain flange;
- the sink overflow opening and channel;
- the rubber splash guard on a garbage disposal;
- the underside of the disposal splash guard;
- the drain trap and accessible pipe surfaces;
- the cabinet base beneath the sink; and
- standing water, condensation, drips, or a slow drain.
Remove and scrub the disposal’s rubber splash guard if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it. Clean the drain opening and sink overflow, then use a stiff brush to mechanically remove accessible organic buildup. A drain cleaning brush can be useful for reaching the film around a drain opening, overflow channel, or other accessible surface. It is a cleaning tool—not a substitute for opening inaccessible plumbing or repairing a leak.
If the drain trap is blocked, leaking, or difficult to access, have a plumber clean or inspect it. For suspected drain flies, physical removal of the organic film is more important than simply pouring a liquid down the drain. Steam or a stiff brush may help where appropriate, and an Enzyme or bacterial drain-maintenance product may be considered after mechanical cleaning if its label allows residential use and gives directions suitable for that drain.
How to make a vinegar trap
Once likely food sources have been removed, use a trap to reduce adult flies and measure whether the population is declining:

- Put a small amount of apple-cider vinegar in a small container.
- Add one drop of unscented dish soap. The soap reduces surface tension so flies that land in the liquid are more likely to become trapped.
- Place the container near, but not directly on, the suspected activity—such as the fruit bowl, recycling bin, or sink.
- Keep the trap away from children, pets, and food-preparation surfaces.
- Replace it when it becomes dirty or loses its effectiveness.
A ready-made fruit fly trap can serve the same monitoring purpose. Choose one that is appropriate for indoor residential use and follow its instructions. A trap is most useful after sanitation: it can show whether adult activity is falling and catch flies that remain, but it does not eliminate larvae or the material in which they are developing.
Sticky cards or monitoring traps can also help identify which area has the most activity. Keep them away from food-contact surfaces and use them as a diagnostic supplement, not as the primary treatment.
Seven-day fruit-fly removal plan
Day 1: Remove the obvious sources
- Discard damaged or fermenting produce.
- Empty food waste, trash, and compost, and take it outdoors.
- Rinse bottles, cans, and jars before recycling.
- Clean the recycling bin, trash can, counters, backsplash, cabinet edges, appliances, and nearby floor.
- Refrigerate exposed produce or put it in sealed containers.
- Set one or two vinegar traps near suspected activity.
Days 2–3: Clean the wet organic areas
- Scrub the drain opening and sink overflow.
- Clean the garbage-disposal splash guard and accessible interior surfaces.
- Check beneath the sink for dampness, leaks, sewage odor, or organic residue.
- Wash dishcloths, sponges, mop heads, and reusable cleaning tools that smell sour or remain damp.
- Continue removing food waste and wiping spills.
Days 4–7: Read the evidence
Check the traps and observe where live flies are concentrated. If catches fall steadily, continue the sanitation routine for several more days. If flies return rapidly, remain concentrated around one drain, or appear in multiple rooms, do not keep adding traps indefinitely. Reinspect the source and consider whether the insects are drain flies or phorid flies associated with plumbing or sewer-related problems.
Keep the kitchen unattractive to new flies
Prevention is mostly moisture and waste control:
- Store ripe fruit and vegetables in the refrigerator or in sealed containers during an outbreak.
- Use a lidded food-waste container and empty it frequently.
- Rinse recyclable containers before placing them in the bin.
- Keep sinks and counters dry overnight.
- Wash damp cloths, sponges, mop heads, and cleaning tools instead of leaving them wet.
- Repair dripping faucets, leaking supply lines, condensation, and damp cabinet bases.
- Keep window and door screens intact and seal obvious gaps if flies are entering from outdoors.
Killing adult flies is only a temporary measure if the conditions supporting larvae remain. Sanitation, exclusion, and removal of the breeding material do the lasting work.

“The vinegar trap will eliminate them.”
It may catch adults, but traps alone do not provide complete control. Continued catches usually mean the breeding source is still present.

“Bleach down the drain is enough.”
Bleach may disinfect or flush part of a drain, but it does not reliably remove all organic film. Mechanical cleaning is the priority for a drain-fly breeding site. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or other household cleaners; dangerous fumes can result.
“Boiling water or baking soda will solve it.”
These methods may flush or clean portions of a drain, but none should be treated as a guaranteed cure for an inaccessible breeding site, plumbing defect, or persistent organic deposit.
“Spray the whole kitchen.”
Indiscriminate aerosol spraying or fogging is a poor substitute for source removal and creates unnecessary exposure around food. If a pesticide is used, the label is legally enforceable: use only the listed product, site, amount, method, ventilation procedure, and re-entry instructions. Remove or cover exposed food, dishes, utensils, food-processing equipment, and food-preparation surfaces before an indoor application if the label permits that use.

When to call an exterminator—or a plumber
Call a licensed pest professional when the infestation is heavy, recurring, spread across rooms, located in a wall or inaccessible space, occurring in a rental or multi-unit building, or not improving after a careful source-removal program. Ask the professional to identify the insect and breeding source rather than simply applying a spray.
A plumber may be the better first call when you find a leaking trap, broken drain, slow or recurring blockage, wet cabinet base, standing water, sewage odor, or evidence that flies are emerging from plumbing. Phorid flies and drain flies can be associated with drains, sewer pipes, broken pipes, or inaccessible organic deposits. Treating the insects without correcting the plumbing will not solve the underlying problem.
In a rental or condominium, notify the property manager if the source may be inside a wall, shared drain, floor drain, or another unit. Recurring small flies can sometimes reflect a building-maintenance issue rather than a housekeeping failure.

Tools that support—not replace—source removal
- Fruit fly trap: useful for monitoring adult activity and reducing remaining adults after cleanup.
- Drain cleaning brush: useful for physically removing accessible organic film around drains, overflows, and disposal components.
- Sticky cards or monitoring traps: useful for comparing activity in different parts of the kitchen and helping identify a problem drain.
- Enzyme or bacterial drain-maintenance product: an optional maintenance aid after physical cleaning, provided the product is labeled for the intended residential use and drain.
None of these products should be presented as a guaranteed cure. The correct tool depends on what is breeding the flies, and inaccessible plumbing, leaks, or sewer-related conditions require professional evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get rid of fruit flies?
You should usually look for a steady decline after removing the breeding source and cleaning the affected areas. Continue sanitation and monitoring for at least several days. If traps keep catching large numbers or flies return rapidly after cleaning, the source may still be present or the insects may not be fruit flies.
Can fruit flies come from the kitchen drain?
Yes. Fruit flies may be attracted to residue around a sink or disposal, while drain flies more specifically breed in organic film inside drains, traps, overflows, or floor drains. Scrubbing the accessible buildup is more important than simply pouring a chemical into the drain.
Should I call an exterminator or a plumber for flies around a drain?
Call a plumber when there is a leak, blockage, standing water, sewage odor, broken pipe, or inaccessible plumbing source. Call a licensed pest professional when the infestation is heavy, recurring, spread across rooms, or persists after source removal without an obvious plumbing defect.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is bleach safe for getting rid of fruit flies?
Bleach is not a guaranteed solution because it may not remove the organic film where larvae develop. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners. Follow product labels and prioritize physical cleaning of the breeding material.
The Bottom Line
Find the breeding source, remove it, clean the surrounding food and drain residue, and use traps only to monitor the decline. If the flies keep returning—or the evidence points to a leak, sewer connection, wall cavity, or shared plumbing—get the underlying building or pest problem inspected rather than repeatedly spraying the kitchen.
