How to Get Rid of Creeping Charlie: An Expert-Backed Plan for Lawns and Garden Beds

The most reliable way to get rid of creeping Charlie is to match the control method to the infestation. Dig out small patches and remove every rooted stem; in an established lawn, use a selective postemergence herbicide whose label specifically allows use on ground ivy and your grass type—triclopyr-containing products are among the options most consistently recommended by university extension experts. Then repair thin turf or reconsider areas where deep shade makes healthy grass unrealistic.

Complete eradication after one treatment is unlikely. Creeping Charlie, also called ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea), spreads through creeping stems that root at their nodes, so missed fragments can regrow. The practical goal is control: reduce the existing plants, prevent regrowth, and make the site less favorable for reinvasion.

First, make sure it is actually creeping Charlie

Creeping Charlie is a perennial member of the mint family. Look for:

  • Rounded or kidney-shaped leaves with scalloped edges
  • Leaves arranged opposite one another along the stem
  • Square stems, rather than round stems
  • Creeping above-ground stolons that root where the nodes touch the soil
  • A mint-like odor when a leaf is crushed
  • Small bluish-purple or lavender, funnel-shaped flowers

It commonly appears in moist, shaded areas and in thin or weak turf, although it can also grow in full sun. It is often confused with henbit or purple deadnettle. Identification matters because herbicides and other control methods that work for one broadleaf weed may not work well for another.

If the plant does not have the square stem, opposite scalloped leaves, and creeping, rooting stems described above, identify it before treating. When in doubt, consult a local extension service or a knowledgeable garden professional.

Choose the control method by location and size

Situation Best starting approach What to expect
A few plants in a garden bed Dig or hand-pull, removing rooted stolons and roots Monitor closely and repeat removal
A few plants in a lawn Hand-remove if practical, or spot-treat with a labeled selective lawn herbicide Some regrowth is possible from missed nodes
A broad infestation in reasonably healthy turf Use a label-compliant selective postemergence treatment, preferably in fall, then repair thin areas Repeat treatment may be permitted or necessary; follow the label
A broad infestation in deep shade or failing turf Correct site conditions, renovate the lawn, or convert the area to a suitable groundcover or mulched bed Repeated herbicide use may not solve the underlying problem

How to remove a small patch by hand

Hand removal is the safest first choice around flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and other desirable broadleaf plants. It is also practical when only a few patches are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Loosen the soil. Water the area lightly beforehand if the soil is hard, but avoid working saturated soil.
  2. Trace the runners. Follow the creeping stems through the grass or bed. The visible leaves are only part of the plant; nodes along the stolon can root and produce new growth.
  3. Lift the plant carefully. Remove as much of the stolon and root material as possible. A small digging tool or hand weeder for small patches can help loosen rooted sections, but no tool guarantees complete removal.
  4. Collect every detached piece. Do not leave pulled stems on the soil surface. Detached nodes may reroot.
  5. Inspect the area again. Check nearby soil and turf for overlooked runners.
  6. Return regularly. Repeated removal is normal. Pull new growth while the patch is still small.

Hand-pulling one time is not a reliable solution for an established infestation. A small fragment left behind can restart the patch.

Controlling creeping Charlie in an established lawn

When ground ivy is spread through turf, hand removal can disturb a large area and leave many fragments behind. A selective, postemergence broadleaf herbicide may be more practical—but only when the exact product label authorizes all of the following:

  • Use on the site, such as a residential lawn
  • Use on your particular turfgrass species
  • Ground ivy or creeping Charlie as a target weed
  • The application method and rate
  • Required reentry interval and other safety directions
  • Any state, regional, seasonal, or environmental restrictions

University extension sources consistently identify triclopyr-containing products as among the stronger lawn options for ground ivy. Some guidance also discusses sulfentrazone or combination products. That does not make every product containing one of these ingredients suitable for every lawn. A product intended for brush, tree stumps, pasture, or non-lawn areas must not be substituted for a residential turf product simply because it contains triclopyr.

For product research, the useful shopping phrase is triclopyr lawn herbicide for ground ivy. Before buying or applying anything, read the current EPA-approved label for that specific formulation. The label—not a general ingredient description, retailer listing, or advice for a different product—controls how the pesticide may be used.

Application and safety essentials

  • Use only the labeled rate and application method. There is no universal mixing ratio for all triclopyr products.
  • Apply only when the weed is actively growing and has sufficient leaf surface for absorption.
  • Prevent drift onto trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, ornamental plants, and other desirable broadleaf plants.
  • Follow the label for protective equipment, reentry, weather conditions, storage, cleanup, and disposal.
  • Keep people and pets out of treated areas for the label-specified period.
  • Do not assume that a handheld spot sprayer is automatically appropriate. Match the sprayer, dilution, and application method to the product label.

A spot sprayer for lawn weeds can be useful for isolated patches when the label permits spot treatment, but equipment does not make an off-label application acceptable. Spray drift and runoff can harm non-target terrestrial plants, so precision and restraint matter.

When to treat creeping Charlie

Fall is usually the best herbicide window

Late summer to early fall is generally the preferred period for chemical control. In fall, ground ivy is actively moving nutrients toward its roots, which can also improve movement of a systemic herbicide into the plant. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Penn State extension guidance all identify fall or late summer to early fall as a strong treatment period.

Apply during active growth, not when the plant is dormant or suffering from summer drought. A stressed or dormant plant may not absorb and move the product effectively.

Spring treatment can help, but may be less decisive

Spring treatment may be useful while the weed is actively growing or near peak bloom. However, spring control may require more than one application, and any repeat application must be allowed by the product label. Do not automatically repeat a treatment because the plants remain visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan mowing around the label

Do not mow immediately before or after treatment when the product directions call for adequate leaf area. Wisconsin guidance recommends waiting several days after mowing before applying a treatment and waiting at least two days before mowing again; the current product label controls if it gives different instructions.

Improve the lawn so creeping Charlie has less opportunity

Herbicide can reduce the existing weed, but a thin lawn leaves open space for reinvasion. After control, address the conditions that allowed ground ivy to establish:

  • Raise mowing height appropriately. Mow for the grass type rather than scalping. Wisconsin guidance gives approximately 2 to 3.5 inches as a useful range for many lawns, but the correct height varies by turf species.
  • Improve drainage where feasible. Creeping Charlie favors moist locations. Correcting drainage can make the site less favorable, although it may require more than a surface-level change.
  • Avoid excessive irrigation. Water according to the lawn’s needs rather than keeping the soil constantly wet.
  • Remove leaves that block light. A heavy leaf layer can weaken turf and create conditions favorable to ground ivy.
  • Overseed thin areas in fall. Choose a grass mix suited to the site’s actual shade conditions. Shade-tolerant grass seed is a lawn-repair material, not a substitute for removing existing creeping Charlie.
  • Fill bare soil promptly. Seed or sod cleared areas as soon as conditions are suitable. Open soil is an invitation to new weeds.

If deep shade prevents grass from becoming dense, more fertilizer and repeated herbicide applications may not be the best long-term answer. A shade-tolerant groundcover, a deliberately designed mulched bed, or a transition away from lawn may be more durable.

Garden beds, vegetables, and heavily infested areas

Do not use a lawn herbicide around desirable broadleaf ornamentals, flowers, shrubs, or vegetables unless the label specifically allows that site and use. Many lawn products can injure or kill the plants you are trying to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In beds, remove existing creeping Charlie by hand or with a digging tool. Once the living plants and rooted stolons are gone, a suitable mulch layer can help cover cleared soil and reduce new weed establishment. Mulch placed directly over living, established ground ivy should not be expected to control it. If converting a failed shaded lawn into a bed, consider landscape mulch for shade beds only after the existing weed has been removed or properly suppressed.

For a very large or heavily infested area, compare three options:

  1. Repeated manual removal and monitoring
  2. Careful renovation, including removal, soil correction, reseeding, or resodding
  3. Conversion to a shade-suitable groundcover or mulch-based landscape

The third option may be the most practical when the site cannot support dense turf. A regional lawn-renovation or turf professional can help assess whether the shade, drainage, and soil conditions are compatible with the lawn you want.

Why common creeping-Charlie remedies fail

Mowing alone

Mowing can reduce flowering and seed production, but it does not remove the creeping, rooting stem system. It is a maintenance step, not a stand-alone eradication method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One hand-pulling session

Missed roots and stolon nodes can regrow. Hand removal works best as a repeated monitoring-and-removal program, especially in small beds and isolated patches.

2,4-D-only products

University of Minnesota and Wisconsin guidance describes 2,4-D alone as relatively weak or having little effect on ground ivy compared with triclopyr-containing options. Check the label and target weed rather than assuming a general broadleaf weed killer will work.

Granular weed-and-feed

Liquid postemergence products generally provide better leaf coverage of existing ground ivy than dry or granular products. Weed-and-feed also applies fertilizer, which may be unnecessary or poorly timed for the lawn.

Borax

Borax should not be treated as a safe organic solution. Wisconsin guidance warns that it is unreliable, can injure turf and desirable plants, and may accumulate because boron does not readily dissipate from soil.

Mulch over living plants

Mulch can help after weeds are removed, but simply covering established creeping Charlie may not stop it. Remove or suppress the living plants first.

A practical decision tree

  1. Do you have only a few plants in a bed? Dig and hand-pull, remove all plant material from the site, and inspect the area repeatedly.
  2. Do you have only a few plants in turf? Hand-remove them if practical. Otherwise, spot-treat with a selective lawn product whose label lists ground ivy or creeping Charlie and your turf type.
  3. Is the lawn broadly infested but still reasonably healthy? Treat during active growth, preferably in fall, using a label-compliant product. Reassess and repeat only when the label permits it.
  4. Is the infestation concentrated in deep shade or thin turf? Improve the site if possible, overseed with an appropriate shade mix, or replace the failing lawn with a suitable groundcover or mulched landscape.
  5. Has creeping Charlie replaced most of the lawn? Compare repeated treatment with a full renovation. Include the cost of removing weeds, correcting soil or drainage problems, reseeding, or resodding.

What success should look like

Success is not necessarily a completely weed-free lawn after one application. A defensible plan is to reduce the population, prevent surviving stolons from recolonizing the area, strengthen the turf, and change unsuitable landscape conditions.

Photograph or mark problem areas, inspect them during the growing season, and remove new patches promptly. If the same shaded or wet location repeatedly fails despite reasonable care, redesigning that portion of the landscape may be more effective than treating the same symptoms indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kills creeping Charlie permanently?

No single treatment guarantees permanent eradication. For small patches, repeated removal of rooted stolons and roots is appropriate. In established turf, a selective product labeled for ground ivy and the specific grass species—often a triclopyr-containing formulation—can provide control, especially when applied in fall. Lawn repair and ongoing monitoring are necessary because missed nodes can regrow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does vinegar kill creeping Charlie?

The supplied extension guidance does not establish vinegar as a reliable control method, so it should not be presented as an expert-backed solution. Household remedies can injure turf and desirable plants without removing the rooted stolon system.

Will 2,4-D kill creeping Charlie?

2,4-D-only products are described by University of Minnesota and Wisconsin guidance as relatively weak or having little effect on ground ivy compared with triclopyr-containing options. Always check the current label for the exact product and target weed.

Is creeping Charlie bad for a lawn?

It can displace weak or thin turf and spread through rooting stolons, particularly in moist or shaded areas. The underlying site conditions matter: if grass cannot compete because of deep shade, drainage, or poor turf density, treating the weed without repairing or redesigning the site may lead to reinvasion.

The Bottom Line

For a few patches, dig out the rooted stolons and keep checking. For established lawn infestations, treat only with a selective product whose current label authorizes ground ivy control on your specific turf, with fall usually the strongest timing. Then thicken the lawn—or replace grass with a shade-suitable landscape where turf is unlikely to succeed.
