For aphids actively feeding on houseplants in winter, isolate the plant, wash or wipe the insects off, and prune badly infested growth. If aphids remain, use an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil only when its label covers the plant, aphid, and indoor use. Heated indoor conditions can let aphids keep reproducing, so inspect the treated plant and nearby plants regularly.
Check for aphids and isolate the plant
Aphids are soft-bodied insects that often cluster on tender new growth, stems, and the undersides of leaves. Sticky honeydew, curled or distorted leaves, and stunted tips can also accompany an infestation. If you are unsure what the pest is, confirm its identity before treating the plant.
Move an affected plant away from other houseplants while you deal with it. Wash your hands after handling the plant, and check nearby plants for signs of spread.
Remove aphids without starting with a pesticide
- Wash the plant. Use a sink, shower, or another controlled stream of water strong enough to dislodge aphids without damaging the plant. Cover the potting mix if needed to prevent it from becoming soaked.
- Wipe remaining insects away. Use a clean, soft cloth or sponge on leaves and stems. A soft toothbrush or cotton swab can help reach small areas.
- Prune badly infested growth. Remove heavily affected leaves or stems and discard them.
Physical removal avoids pesticide exposure, but it takes care to reach aphids hiding on stems and leaf undersides. On a large or densely foliated plant, that can be labor-intensive.
Use a labeled contact treatment if aphids remain
An insecticidal soap or horticultural oil may be an option when physical removal has not cleared the infestation. Use only a product whose label permits use on the particular plant, against aphids, and indoors. Labels and permitted uses vary by product and jurisdiction.
#1 Best Overall
- READY-TO-USE CONTACT SPRAY: No mixing required. Thoroughly spray insecticide on all plant parts, including the underside of leaves. Pests must be sprayed directly to achieve control
- FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: This product can be used indoors, outdoors and in greenhouses on vegetables, fruit trees, ornamentals, shrubs, flowers and gardens
- USE UP TO DAY OF HARVEST: This product may be applied to edibles up to and including the day of harvest
- KILLS BUGS THROUGH CONTACT: Controls aphids, mealybugs, mites, leafhoppers, psyllids, scale insects, thrips, whiteflies and other listed pests.
- CONTAINS FATTY ACID SALTS: The formula contains specifically selected soaps (fatty acid salts)
- Follow the label’s application directions and precautions, including any directions for checking plant tolerance.
- Cover infested surfaces thoroughly, especially leaf undersides. Contact treatments affect aphids they reach; insects missed during application can survive.
- Repeat an application only as the product label directs. Do not increase the concentration, combine sprays, or substitute dish detergent or household soap; household products may damage plants or fail to control aphids.
Compared with washing and wiping, a labeled contact treatment can kill aphids it reaches, but it still requires thorough coverage and may require a label-directed follow-up.
Keep checking the plant through winter
Inspect stems, leaf undersides, and new growth during routine watering, and look over neighboring plants as well. A few yellow sticky cards can help monitor winged adults, but they do not remove aphids feeding on the plant or replace direct treatment.
If aphids persist, confirm the pest identification and check the product label before deciding what to do next. Avoid improvising a stronger dose or treatment schedule.

Why winter does not always stop indoor aphids
Warm indoor conditions can support continued aphid reproduction. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service reports that in warm interiorscapes the aphid life cycle can take less than two weeks and an adult can produce 100 young per week; the opened page does not state a publication year. These figures describe warm interior conditions, not a guarantee for every home or species.

Some aphids outdoors overwinter as eggs on host plants. UC IPM describes delayed-dormant oil use against overwintering eggs on particular fruit trees near spring hatch. That is a specific outdoor use, not a general treatment for active aphids on indoor foliage, and it is not a reason to drench houseplant soil or spray dormant oil indiscriminately in winter.

- GENTLE ON MOST PLANTS - This aphid spray is ideal for use on flowers, herbs, vegetables, houseplants, lawn, tree, shrubs, and more
- PROTECT PLANTS FROM INSECTS - Insecticidal soap concentrate kills a variety of soft-bodied insect pests, including aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, leafhopper, spider mites, and more
- USE PLANT SPRAY THROUGHOUT THE SEASON - Spray at the first sign of damage and every 5-7 days while insects are present, can be used up until the day of harvest
- PEACE OF MIND – This plant spray for insects is OMRI Listed and compliant for use in organic gardening so you can use it without worry
- GARDEN INSECT KILLER - Potassium salts of fatty acids weaken insects' outer shell, dehydrating them and killing on contact
Indoor systemic insecticides are not the routine first step for a houseplant infestation. Maryland Extension notes that indoor systemic products can persist in plant tissue for weeks, may be unsuitable for edible herbs or fruit, and can raise concerns for children, pets, or pollinators if treated plants later flower outdoors. Physical removal and suitable labeled contact treatments are more appropriate starting points.
Releasing ladybugs or other beneficial insects is also often a poor fit for a typical home infestation. Maryland Extension notes that beneficial insects sold for pest control may be supplied in quantities intended for greenhouses, may not thrive in home humidity, and may disperse.
