How to Get Rid of Ant Hills in Your Yard or Garden

Most ordinary ant hills do not need extermination. Flatten nuisance lawn mounds, protect threatened vegetable transplants carefully, and use fire-ant-specific guidance when needed.

For a typical, non-stinging ant hill in the lawn, start by leaving it alone if it is not causing a problem. If it is in the way, rake it flat or wash the soil into the surrounding grass with a forceful garden-hose stream; this removes the visible mound but may not eliminate the colony. Fire ants need a different, species-specific approach, and any pesticide used near vegetables must be labeled for that crop and site.

Should you get rid of the ant hill?

A mound does not automatically mean your yard needs treatment. Iowa State University Extension says most soil-nesting ants do not require control. Consider action when a mound interferes with mowing or use of the yard, or when ants are disturbing a vulnerable plant. First determine whether the ants sting: fire-ant advice and treatments differ from routine lawn-mound management.

How to get rid of ordinary ant hills in a lawn

Flatten the mound for a mowing or appearance problem

For an above-grass mound, rake the soil flat or use a forceful stream from a garden hose to wash it into the surrounding lawn. This is a low-impact way to manage the visible mound, not a reliable way to kill the colony. Repeat if ants rebuild. Iowa State Extension recommends nonchemical management first and treats insecticide as a last resort. Iowa State Extension’s guidance on ant mounds describes these methods.

Reserve pesticide for a real need

If flattening is not enough and the mound is causing a meaningful problem, use only a product whose current label covers the target ant, the exact site, and the application method. Apply it only as directed. Do not treat the whole lawn merely because a few ordinary mounds are visible; the cited Iowa guidance supports spot treatment only as a last resort.

How to get rid of ants in a vegetable garden

In Iowa State Extension’s account, ants do not eat plant roots, but their excavation can expose transplant roots to air and drying. If a transplant is threatened, focus any necessary treatment around that plant rather than treating the entire garden. Check that the pesticide label expressly permits use on the crop and site, and follow its directions, including any harvest interval.

Do not assume a lawn or turf treatment is suitable for vegetables. Mississippi State University Extension warns against using acephate mound treatments in vegetable gardens because acephate is systemic and can move into plant tissues. See Mississippi State Extension’s fire-ant guidance for home vegetable gardens and follow the current product label.

What to do if the ants may be fire ants

Identify the ants before choosing a treatment, and use regional fire-ant guidance for your location. Where fire ants occur, bait-based control and direct mound treatment serve different purposes. Mississippi State Extension describes granular bait as the foundation of home-lawn control, with mound treatment as follow-up for surviving mounds. North Carolina State Extension explains that bait works when foraging ants carry it back to the colony, so it takes longer than direct-contact treatment.

Approach What it does Timing and scope Key limitation
Fire-ant bait Foragers carry bait back to the colony. Slower to act; broadcast bait may address colonies across a lawn when the label permits. Placement, weather, and site must meet the label. Do not put bait directly on a mound unless the label specifically directs it.
Direct mound treatment Targets a visible mound. Liquid mound treatments may act more quickly than bait; useful as follow-up for surviving mounds in the cited Mississippi guidance. Does not necessarily address other colonies in the lawn. Product and site restrictions vary; do not assume it is permitted around edible crops.

These methods are not interchangeable across products. Check the current label for the intended site and application conditions. For regional detail, consult Mississippi State Extension’s home-lawn guidance, its yard-control guidance, and North Carolina State Extension’s landscape guidance.

What not to do—and when to get help

Avoid pouring boiling water on a mound or digging it out with a shovel as a casual fix. Tennessee Extension warns that these methods can endanger the person applying them as well as plants, people, or animals nearby. Keep children and pets away from treated areas as the pesticide label directs. For a fire-ant infestation that is extensive or persistent, consult local extension guidance or a qualified pest-control professional.

For details on turf and landscape treatment options, see North Carolina State Extension’s fire-ant guidance for lawns and landscapes and Tennessee Extension’s home and garden fire-ant treatment guidance. Product registrations and permitted uses can change, so follow the current label rather than relying on an older recommendation.
