How to Get Gemini for Home Early Access on Nest Speakers and Displays

Request Gemini for Home early access in Google Home under Home settings → Early Access. Here is what happens next, which Nest devices qualify, what is free, and why enrollment is a household-wide, non-reversible change.

As of August 18, 2026, you can request Gemini for Home early access from the Google Home app: open Google Home → profile picture or initial → Home settings → Early Access, then follow the enrollment prompts. Google does not activate it immediately for everyone; requesting access places your home in a gradual, invitation-based rollout.

You do not need to buy the new Google Home Speaker for the core assistant, and you do not need a subscription for basic Gemini for Home features. However, opting in is a household-wide change, and Google says a home cannot switch back to Google Assistant afterward.

Before you request access

Check these requirements first:

  • You are using a supported country and language. Google’s current early-access list includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • You are signed in to the Google Account that manages the intended Google Home.
  • Your Google Home app is updated.
  • Your Google Groups settings allow Google to add you to groups.
  • Your Google Home or Nest speaker or display is compatible. Google says devices released since 2016 can receive Gemini for Home features, but the available features vary by model, software rollout, country, language, and subscription.

Availability and supported devices can change, so check Google’s current compatibility and availability information before treating an older device as fully supported.

How to request Gemini for Home early access

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Under global settings, make sure “Add me to their groups” is checked.
  4. Save the setting.
  5. Install the latest update for the Google Home app.
  6. Open Google Home.
  7. Tap your profile picture or account initial in the upper-right corner.
  8. Tap Home settings.
  9. Tap Early Access.
  10. Follow the prompts to request Gemini for Home early access.

This is separate from the Google Home app’s Public Preview program. Joining Public Preview does not necessarily enroll your home in Gemini for Home voice-assistant early access.

Requesting access is not the same as receiving it

After you submit the request, Google places your home in line for an invitation. There may be a delay, and tapping Early Access does not guarantee that Gemini becomes available immediately.

When Google is ready to upgrade your home, you should see a Google Home notification titled or beginning with “Introducing Gemini for Home.” Tap the notification, choose Get started, and complete the setup instructions.

If you choose Not now, Google says a later setup route may appear through an in-app prompt or the Google Home app inbox. Google particularly identifies this route for Google Home Premium subscribers, but the exact prompt can vary as the rollout changes.

Important: the upgrade applies to the home

Gemini for Home is not an isolated trial on one Nest Mini. When a home opts in, Gemini for Home becomes available on all eligible devices in that home, including compatible devices added later. Everyone in the home can use the assistant.

Treat enrollment as a household-wide assistant upgrade, not a reversible per-speaker experiment.

Google also says that once a home switches to the Gemini for Home voice assistant, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Consider that before accepting the invitation, especially if several people rely on existing routines, responses, or voice behavior.

What Gemini for Home does

Gemini for Home is Google’s home-focused voice assistant, not simply the Gemini mobile app installed on a speaker. It is designed for shared household interactions and connected home devices.

Compared with a more rigid voice-command system, Google describes Gemini for Home as better suited to:

  • Conversational questions and follow-up questions.
  • More flexible natural-language smart-home commands.
  • Finding and playing media.
  • Timers and alarms.
  • Calendars, notes, lists, and reminders.
  • Household-oriented requests involving home devices and shared information.

The Gemini for Home product page distinguishes this experience from the Gemini mobile app, which is intended for personal tasks such as writing, research, and assistance while you are away from home.

Which Nest speakers and displays are supported?

Google says Gemini for Home works with Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016. That means existing hardware—not only the newest speaker—may be eligible.

Broad support on existing devices

Many existing Google Home and Nest products can receive the core Gemini for Home assistant, including everyday requests such as smart-home control, questions, timers, and media playback.

Newer devices with fuller support

Google identifies newer products such as the Nest Hub (2nd generation) and Nest Hub Max as supporting the fuller Gemini experience. Even on these devices, individual features can depend on the rollout and plan.

Older and third-party devices

Older hardware, including the original Google Home speaker, may receive most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. Google likewise says third-party speakers and displays support most features but not Gemini Live.

So “supports Gemini for Home” should not be read as “supports every Gemini feature.” Consult Google’s current support matrix for model-level information rather than relying only on the device’s age or product name.

What is free and what requires Google Home Premium?

The core Gemini for Home voice assistant does not require a subscription. Google lists these basic capabilities as available without Premium:

  • Smart-home control.
  • Timers and alarms.
  • General questions.
  • Media search and playback.
  • Calendars, notes, lists, and reminders.

Premium is for additional capabilities, not for requesting early access itself.

Gemini Live Not included Included, subject to device and rollout limits

Google Home Premium has two U.S. tiers listed on Google’s Store: Standard costs $10 per month or $100 per year, while Advanced costs $20 per month or $200 per year. These prices were checked on August 18, 2026 and may differ by country or change later. Google’s feature matrix indicates that some camera capabilities require Advanced, while other Gemini features are available on Standard.

Google says existing Nest Aware subscribers were moved to Google Home Premium plans: Nest Aware subscribers receive Standard, while Nest Aware Plus subscribers receive Advanced. Check your Google account billing page if the terminology has changed.

What is Gemini Live?

Gemini Live is the more open-ended conversational mode. Google describes it as a way to have a back-and-forth discussion, interrupt the assistant, change topics, brainstorm, learn, or get help with a household task.

The documented trigger phrase is “Hey Google, let’s chat.” Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium and may also depend on the speaker or display, country, language, and rollout stage. It is not synonymous with the basic Gemini for Home assistant.

For example, a household may use the free assistant to set a timer or turn off lights, while Premium is needed for the more conversational Live experience and selected advanced automation or camera features.

Should you buy the $99.99 Google Home Speaker?

No—buying it is not the requirement for early access. If you already own compatible Google Home or Nest hardware, Google says the existing device can receive Gemini for Home through the rollout.

The new Google Home Speaker is still relevant because Google designed it specifically around Gemini for Home. Google announced a U.S. price of $99.99 and retail availability from June 25, 2026. The product includes a six-month Google Home Premium Standard trial, described by Google as a $60 value.

After the trial, you retain the basic Gemini for Home functionality but lose subscription features unless you continue with a paid plan.

  • Buy it if you do not have compatible Google hardware, want Google’s newest Gemini-focused speaker, or value the included Premium trial.
  • Keep your existing hardware if you mainly want basic voice assistance and already own a supported Nest speaker or display.
  • Do not buy it solely to request early access. The purchase does not guarantee immediate activation for every account or home.

What to do if Early Access is missing

A missing menu or invitation does not automatically mean your speaker is incompatible. Google is rolling access out gradually and says users will be notified when Gemini for Home is available for their home.

  1. Update Google Home. Install the latest version from your device’s app store, then reopen the app.
  2. Check the account. Confirm that you are using the Google Account that manages the intended home.
  3. Check Google Groups. Sign in to Google Groups and enable “Add me to their groups” under global settings.
  4. Check your location and language. Early access depends on supported countries and languages.
  5. Use the correct menu. Look under Home settings → Early Access; do not rely only on Public Preview.
  6. Wait for the rollout. Registration is not an instant unlock, and invitations can arrive at different times for different homes.
  7. Review account and household limitations. An unsupported account type or household configuration can prevent enrollment.

A factory reset, VPN, sideloaded app, country change, or unofficial invitation link is not an official fix and can create additional account or home-configuration problems.

Privacy and household considerations

Because Gemini for Home is designed for shared use, its implications extend beyond the person who accepts the invitation. Eligible devices across the home can use the assistant, and voice-matched children receive a filtered experience.

Google says users can review or delete Gemini for Home activity in the Google Home app. Google also says it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with personal data from the service. These are Google’s stated data-handling practices, not an independent privacy audit.

Before enrolling, review the current privacy controls in the app and make sure household members understand that the assistant is changing across the home. Google also cautions that Gemini responses should be checked for accuracy and that features may change.

Decision guide

  • Request early access if you already own compatible hardware, want more natural conversations, and accept household-wide activation with no rollback.
  • Choose Premium Standard if Gemini Live or additional conversational features are important to you.
  • Consider Premium Advanced if your household uses compatible Nest cameras or doorbells and wants higher-tier camera AI, history, or alert features.
  • Buy the new speaker if you need new Google hardware or want the included six-month Premium Standard trial—not simply because you believe it is required for Gemini.
