To get chocolate out of washable clothes, lift off the excess, soak the stain in cool water, pretreat it with liquid laundry detergent or a prewash stain remover, then wash at a temperature allowed by the care label. Check the stain before machine-drying; repeat the treatment if any mark remains. For delicate, non-colorfast or dry-clean-only garments, use a more cautious approach.
Remove chocolate from washable clothes
- Lift away the excess. Use a spoon or dull edge to gently remove solid chocolate. Avoid forceful scraping or rubbing, which can push residue farther into the fabric or damage it. For dried residue, handle it gently; Tide advises taking care not to damage the fabric when loosening it (Tide’s chocolate-stain instructions).
- Rinse and soak in cool water. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recommends soaking the stained area in cool water. Persil’s procedure also suggests turning the garment inside out and rinsing the reverse of the stain with cold water (ACI stain-removal guide; Persil’s chocolate-stain instructions).
- Pretreat the mark. Apply liquid laundry detergent or a prewash stain remover, following the product directions. ACI recommends a prewash stain remover for chocolate; manufacturer guidance also supports detergent pretreatment (Clorox’s chocolate-stain instructions).
- Wash according to the garment label. Sources differ on wash temperature: ACI recommends the hottest setting safe for the fabric, while Persil’s chocolate procedure uses cold water. Check the care label and follow it rather than assuming one temperature suits every garment. Maytag’s guidance specifically for cotton and cotton blends also recommends the hottest safe setting (Maytag’s cotton and cotton-blend guidance).
- Inspect before machine-drying. If you can still see a mark, repeat pretreatment and washing before drying. Persil recommends air-drying so the garment can be checked; Clorox also advises inspecting and repeating treatment if needed (Clorox’s instructions).
Why chocolate stains may need more than one treatment
Persil describes chocolate as containing cocoa powder, which can leave dark residue, and cocoa butter, which can leave an oily-looking mark. Clorox also notes cocoa butter. That is why the practical sequence removes solid chocolate first and then uses detergent pretreatment on the remaining stain; a single rinse may not clear both kinds of residue.

Choose products and wash settings that suit the garment
| Option | When it fits | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid laundry detergent | For pretreating a stain on washable clothing, following the product label. | Use only when compatible with the garment’s care instructions. |
| Prewash stain remover | A chocolate-specific pretreatment option recommended by ACI. | Follow both its directions and the garment’s care label. |
| Oxygen bleach | A possible follow-up for some garments when the care label permits it; Maytag includes it in its cotton and cotton-blend guidance. | It is optional, not a required step. Check fabric and color restrictions; ACI says any bleach used for rewashing must be safe for the fabric. |
Do not apply chlorine bleach indiscriminately. Bleach choice depends on the garment, and ACI’s guidance is to use only bleach safe for that fabric (ACI stain-removal guide). If you do not already have a suitable detergent or stain remover, either product category can be used for pretreatment; buying a special product is not necessary if you have a compatible one at home.

Silk, wool, other fragile fabrics, garments that may lose color, and items marked dry-clean-only do not necessarily tolerate soaking, pretreatment or machine washing. Use the garment’s care label as your guide and consider taking the item to a professional cleaner rather than risking damage with a standard wash treatment. If a home treatment is appropriate for the garment, test it discreetly first where the fabric and care instructions allow (Persil’s advice for delicate fabrics; Tide’s inconspicuous-test guidance).

If you are considering bleach as a further step, use only a type the care label allows; ACI specifically advises that bleach used for a rewash be safe for the fabric (ACI stain-removal guide).
