You may be able to raise or lower a hacked IKEA desk with Alexa by mounting a SwitchBot Bot over the desk controller’s existing buttons and connecting the Bot through a supported SwitchBot Hub. This is a conditional DIY workaround, not an IKEA-certified desk integration: the Bot must fit the controller and reliably press its buttons, and you should watch the desk during setup.
Can Alexa control an IKEA standing desk?
IKEA documents Alexa integration for supported IKEA Home smart products, but its guidance does not establish Alexa control of height-adjustable desk movement. The IKEA integration applies to compatible products and may depend on market and system requirements; see IKEA’s voice-control guidance and IKEA’s smart-home product support.

For a desk modified with a separate motor controller, a possible route is to have a button-pushing accessory physically press the controller’s up or down button. The desk’s actual controller—not the IKEA name on the desktop—determines whether this can work.

| Route | What it controls | What it requires | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| SwitchBot Bot on the desk controller | Physically presses an accessible controller button | A Bot, a supported SwitchBot Hub, Alexa linking, and suitable button placement | Fit, reliable actuation, and safe movement are not verified for your specific desk. | IKEA Home smart integration | Supported IKEA smart-home products, such as compatible lights, blinds, or outlets | A compatible IKEA product and the applicable app, hub, and integration for your market | IKEA’s cited guidance does not document generic height-adjustable desk control. IKEA voice-control guidance; IKEA smart-home support. |
| Smart plug | Switches power to a suitable connected load | A compatible smart plug and Alexa integration | It does not provide directional or hold-to-move control of a desk motor. IKEA TRETAKT product information; Amazon smart-home connection guidance. |
Check the desk controller before buying or mounting a Bot
Identify the controls and their behavior
Record the desk model, motor controller, and up/down control layout in your particular build. Check whether each control is a momentary button that moves the desk only while pressed, or whether it behaves differently. The retrofit depends on the controller’s physical buttons and operation; there is no universal IKEA desk interface established here.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Smart Plug works with the Alexa app and compatible Alexa devices to add voice control to any electrical outlet.
- Simple setup - No smart home hub required. Just plug it in, open the Alexa app and follow the stress-free directions to get started in minutes.
- Compatible with many lamps, fans, coffee makers, and other household devices with a physical on/off switch.
- Make any outlet a smart outlet. Compact design keeps your second outlet free for an additional smart plug.
- Use as a timer for lights or create lighting schedules for when you are away from your home.
Check physical fit and reliable pressing
SwitchBot describes the Bot as a device that physically pushes buttons, but that broad product description does not confirm compatibility with a particular desk controller. Before relying on it, check that it can be mounted securely, its pusher aligns with the intended button, and it can press and release that button consistently without interfering with neighboring controls.
Do not assume the setup offers preset heights, precise positioning, or a safety feature that stops movement in a particular way. Those capabilities are not established for this desk-and-Bot combination.

- SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
- COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
- CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
- NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps
Connect SwitchBot to Alexa
- Add the Bot and Hub in the SwitchBot app. SwitchBot’s Alexa guide directs users to set up the Bot and a Hub in the SwitchBot app first. It lists Hub Mini and Hub 2 among the Hub series products. Follow the current app prompts, since labels and steps may change between app versions.
- Link SwitchBot with Alexa. Use the Alexa skill/account-linking process described in SwitchBot’s Alexa setup guide. The guide says linking synchronizes connected devices.
- Use Alexa’s general device setup only if needed. For a general compatible smart-home device, Amazon’s route is Alexa app > Devices > plus sign > Add Device, then choose the device type and brand and follow the prompts. This does not replace SwitchBot’s account-linking steps. Amazon notes that most Wi-Fi smart-home devices use 2.4 GHz. See Amazon’s connection instructions.
- Test while watching the desk. Try each command with a clear area around the desk and confirm that the requested button press and movement actually occur. Amazon recommends following the product instructions and confirming that the requested action completed; see Amazon’s smart-home guidance.
Why a smart plug is not a desk-height controller
A smart plug can switch power to an appropriate connected load, but switching power is not the same as commanding a desk to move up or down. Desk movement depends on the controller’s directional behavior; a plug does not provide the up/down button action or hold-to-move behavior. Do not use a plug as a substitute for the desk controller.

IKEA’s Greece product page lists TRETAKT’s maximum output as 3680 W, but that specification describes the plug’s output limit on that product page; it does not establish suitability for desk motion. See IKEA TRETAKT product information.

If you meant IKEA smart accessories, use IKEA’s integration path
For supported IKEA smart-home devices rather than desk movement, follow the integration setup in the IKEA Home smart app and check local market availability and product requirements. IKEA’s instructions cover its supported smart-home products; they should not be read as confirmation that a modified desk can be controlled this way. See IKEA’s voice-control guidance.
