To fold a fitted sheet, nest its elastic corners together in pairs, smooth the sheet into a rectangle, tuck the elastic edges inward, and fold to fit your shelf. A bed or dining table makes the job easier if the fabric is hard to control in your hands.
How to fold a fitted sheet in five steps
- Turn the sheet inside out and find the corners. Hold it lengthwise so the four elastic corner pockets are easy to reach.
- Nest two adjacent corners. Put one hand into each of two neighboring corner pockets. Bring them together and tuck one corner over the other, lining up the seams and elastic.
- Nest the other two corners. Repeat with the opposite pair, then bring the two paired sets together and tuck one set into the other.
- Lay it flat and hide the elastic. Place the sheet on a bed or table, smooth the fabric, and fold the elastic edges inward to make a straighter rectangle.
- Fold to the size you need. Fold the rectangle until it fits your linen shelf or storage space.
The corner pockets are the part that usually takes the most handling: nesting them gives the elastic a manageable shape. If the first attempt feels awkward, take it slowly; the sequence becomes easier to follow with practice.

Choose a hand-folding or board-assisted method
Both approaches use the same basic corner-nesting technique and finish with a rectangle. A broad, flat surface is a useful alternative to folding the sheet in the air when the fabric is difficult to control.

A board is optional, not a requirement. The available instructions do not establish that either method is universally faster or easier, or that one works better for every fabric.

Store folded sheets as sets
Once the fitted sheet is folded, you can keep matching linens together. Martha Stewart suggests wrapping a complete sheet set in a 1 1/2-yard square of fabric and sorting sets by room or size. AARP describes putting the remaining linens inside a pillowcase. These are optional storage approaches, separate from folding the fitted sheet itself.
