Most dishwasher problems can be narrowed down without replacing a part. Safety first: when to stop using the dishwasher

Stop immediately and arrange qualified appliance service if you notice smoke, a burning-plastic smell, arcing, melted wiring, repeated breaker trips, water near electrical components, or an active manufacturer recall. CPSC recall notices commonly instruct owners to stop using affected dishwashers and disconnect power at the fuse or circuit breaker.

Before removing a filter, pump cover, toe-kick panel, hose, or wiring, switch off the dishwasher at the circuit breaker or unplug it where safely accessible. Turn off the water supply before disconnecting an inlet or drain hose. Standing water may contain sharp glass, ceramic, or metal fragments, so wear gloves and work carefully.

Never bypass the door latch, float, leak-protection, thermal, or electrical safety switches. If water has collected in the base or a leak-protection indicator is active, shut off the water supply and seek service rather than repeatedly resetting the machine.

Quick dishwasher troubleshooting decision tree

Symptom Start with these checks Stop and call for service when…
Will not start Breaker, door latch, control lock, delay start, and power supply The breaker trips again, the panel is wet or damaged, or there is a burning smell
Standing water or will not drain Cancel/reset procedure, filter, pump area, drain hose, air gap, disposal connection, and high loop The pump is electrically faulty, noisy, leaking, or still fails after the drain path is clear
Fills but does not clean Filter, spray-arm movement, blocked jets, loading, water supply, detergent, and cycle selection Spray remains weak after basic flow checks or a circulation-pump/control fault is suspected
Dishes are wet or the machine does not heat Drying selection, rinse aid, loading, incoming water, and cycle settings A heater, thermostat, fan, wiring, or control fault is possible
Leaks Stop the cycle; inspect the door gasket, hoses, clamps, suds, leveling, and drain routing Water is approaching electrical parts, the tub or pump is leaking, or the source is underneath
Bad smell or white residue Clean the filter, gasket, sump, and spray arms; check for hard-water buildup The odor is electrical or burnt, or cleaning does not resolve the problem

Before troubleshooting: find the model number and describe the failure

Find the rating plate before ordering parts or interpreting an error code. It is commonly inside the door opening or along the tub frame, although the exact location varies. Record:

  • Brand, model number, and serial number
  • The displayed error code, including any letters, numbers, or flashing-light pattern
  • When the problem occurs: immediately, during filling, during washing, during heating, or at the end of the cycle
  • Whether the tub contains water
  • Whether the dishwasher hums, fills, sprays, heats, drains, or trips the breaker
  • Whether the unit was recently installed, connected to a new garbage disposal, moved, or exposed to a leak

The model number is essential for finding a compatible replacement part. A generic pump, filter, gasket, or spray arm should never be treated as a guaranteed fit. Use the model and serial number when checking the warranty, recall information, owner’s manual, and parts catalog.

Dishwasher will not start

  1. Check the breaker or fuse. Confirm that the dishwasher circuit has power. If the breaker has opened, reset it once. If it trips again, stop. Repeatedly cycling the breaker is not a safe diagnostic method.
  2. Check the door. Remove anything preventing the door from closing fully, such as a tall pan, utensil, or incorrectly positioned rack. The latch must engage the door sensor.
  3. Check control lock. A control-lock setting can make the panel appear unresponsive. The button combination varies by model, so use the exact instructions in the manual.
  4. Check delay start and cycle selection. Cancel a delayed cycle and choose a normal or appropriate wash program.
  5. Check the controls for moisture or damage. A wet, cracked, or unresponsive control panel is a reason to stop rather than continue testing.

A failed door latch or door-sensor circuit can prevent the dishwasher from starting. Door-sensor error guidance from manufacturers such as Bosch is model-specific; it may call for a particular reset or service procedure. Do not short, bypass, or tape down the latch switch.

Dishwasher has standing water or will not drain

A small amount of clean water may remain in the sump of some dishwasher designs. Dirty water standing over the filter, a foul odor, or water that remains at the end of every cycle indicates a drain problem.

Use this drain-check sequence

  1. Cancel or reset the cycle according to the manual. Observe whether the drain pump runs. A brief hum does not prove that water can move through the drain path.
  2. Disconnect power. Turn off the breaker or unplug the unit before reaching into the filter, sump, or pump-cover area.
  3. Clean the filter. Remove it as directed, wash it with warm water and mild dishwashing detergent, and scrub it with a soft brush. Reinstall it correctly; a loose or incorrectly seated filter can allow debris into the pump area.
  4. Inspect the sump and pump cover. Look for food debris, labels, bones, glass, ceramic, or other objects. Debris can be sharp. Do not force a cover or rotating component that the manual does not identify as user-removable.
  5. Inspect the drain hose. Look for kinks, crushing, blockage, loose connections, or a hose that has sagged into an improper position.
  6. Check the sink air gap, if fitted. Remove its cap and clean away accumulated debris. Not every installation has an air gap.
  7. Check the garbage-disposal connection. If the dishwasher was recently installed or connected to a new disposal, the dishwasher inlet’s knockout plug may not have been removed. This is a common installation-related reason for a dishwasher that cannot drain.
  8. Check the high loop or air-gap routing. The drain hose must be routed according to the installation instructions. A properly routed high loop helps prevent siphoning and wastewater backflow; incorrect routing can also obstruct drainage.

Do not pour chemical drain opener, caustic cleaner, or other drain chemicals into the dishwasher. These products can damage components, create hazardous fumes, and leave chemicals in the appliance.

If the filter, sump, hose, air gap, disposal connection, and drain routing are clear but dirty water remains, the drain pump, impeller, wiring, or control may be at fault. A pump that receives power but does not run, runs noisily, leaks, or fails a model-specific electrical test needs further diagnosis. Only a qualified person should perform live-voltage or continuity testing, and the test procedure must match the appliance model.

For a persistent drain failure that has passed the basic checks, compare the exact model number before ordering a model-specific dishwasher drain pump. Confirm that the part is listed for your model rather than assuming that a pump described as “universal” will fit. If you have identified the failed component, use a parts source that lets you find the correct dishwasher part by model number.

Dishwasher fills but does not wash or clean well

If the unit fills but the dishes remain dirty, begin with water flow and loading—not the circulation pump.

  1. Clean the filter. A clogged filter can restrict circulation and allow food particles to redeposit on dishes.
  2. Check spray-arm movement. With the racks positioned normally, spin each arm by hand. Tall plates, pans, utensils, or a loose rack component may obstruct it.
  3. Clear blocked spray-arm jets. Remove mineral or food debris only in the manner permitted by the manual. Do not enlarge the jets with a drill or sharp tool.
  4. Reload the racks. Face soiled surfaces toward the spray, avoid nesting bowls, and keep detergent and spray paths clear. Tall items should not block an arm from rotating.
  5. Confirm the water supply. The supply valve should be fully open, and the inlet hose should not be kinked or crushed.
  6. Use the right detergent. Detergent must be fresh and intended for automatic dishwashers. Hand dish soap creates excessive suds because it is not formulated for a dishwasher; suds can cause leaks and poor operation.
  7. Select an appropriate cycle. Use a heavier cycle for baked-on soil and the correct options for the load.

Scrape food from dishes instead of fully pre-rinsing them. ENERGY STAR advises that modern dishwashers and detergents are designed for scraped rather than necessarily rinsed dishes, and that running full loads improves efficiency. Excessive pre-rinsing also removes the soil that some dishwasher sensors use to adjust the cycle.

If the dishwasher fills but spray is weak or absent after these checks, possible causes include insufficient fill, a blocked filter, circulation-pump trouble, a diverter problem, or a control fault. Do not condemn the circulation pump until the loading, filter, spray arms, water supply, detergent, and cycle have been checked.

Dishes are wet or the dishwasher does not heat

Wet dishes do not always indicate a failed heater. First confirm that:

  • The selected cycle includes heated drying, if that is a feature you expect the dishwasher to use
  • Rinse aid is filled and enabled if the owner’s manual recommends it
  • Dishes are angled so water can drain rather than pool in cups and bowls
  • Large items are not blocking air movement or the detergent and vent areas
  • The incoming water supply is adequate and the cycle is completing normally

Persistent poor drying or a dishwasher that never heats can involve the heating element, thermostat, fan, vent, wiring, or control circuit. Heater and control-board diagnosis introduces live electrical and high-temperature hazards. Unless the exact manual provides a safe, model-specific procedure you are qualified to follow, arrange professional service.

Remove the dishwasher from service if it suddenly becomes excessively hot, smells burned, trips the breaker, or displays a heater-related error. Historical dishwasher recalls have involved heating elements, wiring, power cords, timers, and rinse-aid leakage associated with fire hazards. Check the exact model for current recall information and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Dishwasher is leaking

Stop the cycle rather than letting it run to locate the leak. Disconnect power if water is approaching electrical components, shut off the water supply, and dry the accessible area safely.

Once the appliance is safe to inspect, note where the water first appears:

  • At the front of the door: Check that the door gasket is seated, clean, and undamaged. Make sure a rack, utensil, or dish is not preventing the door from closing.
  • Under the door: Look for excessive suds, a blocked spray arm directing water at the seal, incorrect leveling, or a damaged lower-door seal. Ordinary hand dish soap is a common source of excessive suds.
  • At the inlet: Inspect the water-supply connection and inlet hose for a loose fitting, damaged seal, or kink. Keep the water supply off while disconnecting any connection.
  • At the drain connection: Inspect the drain hose, clamps, air gap, disposal connection, and high-loop routing.
  • Under the tub or appliance: A leaking pump, hose, tub, seal, or corroded component may require removal of panels and professional diagnosis.

Leveling matters: an appliance that is out of level can allow water to reach areas that should remain dry. Do not continue running the machine just to identify the source. Water in the base can activate a leak-protection float or safety switch; treat that condition as a reason to shut off the water supply and seek model-specific support.

Dishwasher smells bad or leaves white residue

  1. Switch off power before reaching into the filter or sump.
  2. Remove and wash the filter.
  3. Wipe the door gasket, lower door edge, and areas where food residue collects.
  4. Clear debris from the sump and spray arms as the manual permits.
  5. Check for standing dirty water and correct any unresolved drain problem.
  6. For white mineral deposits, use a dishwasher-safe cleaner or descaler only if it is compatible with the appliance and recommended by the owner’s manual.

Hard water can produce white residue and mineral buildup that restricts spray and reduces cleaning performance. A dishwasher cleaner or descaler can be useful for this symptom, but it will not repair a blocked pump, failed heater, or leaking seal. Never mix cleaning products. Do not combine bleach, acids, descalers, or drain products, and do not use a chemical that the manual prohibits.

Error codes are triage signals, not automatic diagnoses. The meaning can change by brand, model, control generation, and geography. A code associated with draining on one machine may mean something different on another.

Manufacturer guidance, including Bosch’s model-specific error support, groups faults around conditions such as blocked filters or pumps, drain problems, insufficient inlet flow, door-sensor faults, low voltage, and leak-protection activation. The recommended checks may include the filter, pump cover, drain hose, air gap, water supply, or a particular reset sequence. Unresolved electronic, heater, leak, or safety faults should be referred to the manufacturer’s support team or a qualified technician.

Have the model and serial number ready when contacting support. Describe what happens before the code appears and whether the dishwasher fills, sprays, heats, drains, or trips the breaker. That information is usually more useful than the code alone.

Which dishwasher repairs are reasonable DIY projects?

DIY maintenance is generally limited to non-invasive work that the owner’s manual permits: cleaning the filter, clearing accessible food debris, checking loading and spray-arm movement, inspecting visible hose routing, cleaning an air gap, correcting a disposal connection, and replacing a clearly compatible external component when the procedure is straightforward.

Use extra caution with replacement parts. A dishwasher replacement filter, dishwasher drain hose, dishwasher door gasket, or dishwasher spray arm must match the model and, in some cases, the exact revision. Compare the part number, dimensions, connector style, mounting method, and manufacturer’s compatibility list before ordering. Disconnect power and water whenever the installation procedure requires reaching behind panels or into the appliance.

An appliance multimeter is relevant only when a qualified person knows how to isolate the circuit and follow the model’s test procedure. It should not be used as permission to probe live wiring or bypass a safety device. Heating elements, control boards, inlet valves, circulation pumps, wiring, and leaks underneath the tub are good reasons to arrange professional dishwasher repair.

Repair or replace the dishwasher?

Repair is usually more attractive when the dishwasher is relatively young, the fault is a filter, hose, latch, gasket, rack component, or clearly compatible pump, and the total repair cost is comfortably below the price of a comparable replacement.

Replacement becomes more sensible when the appliance has repeated failures, a leaking or corroded tub, obsolete or unavailable parts, several electronic or heating faults, or an estimate approaching the cost of a new machine. Also consider whether the existing dishwasher fits the opening, meets your capacity needs, and uses an acceptable amount of water and electricity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consumer Reports has reported a median dishwasher repair cost of approximately $142 in member surveys. That is survey-based guidance, not a quote, and costs vary substantially by location, brand, age, accessibility, part, and labor. The same consumer guidance generally treats pump repairs and electronic-control problems as jobs better left to professionals.

If replacement is the better choice, compare the EnergyGuide label and look for an ENERGY STAR-certified model. ENERGY STAR says certified dishwashers can reduce utility costs compared with hand washing and recommends choosing the right capacity, scraping rather than rinsing dishes, and running full loads. Efficiency claims and availability vary by model and market, so check the current label for the machine you are considering.

What to have ready before ordering a part or booking service

  • Full model number, serial number, and a photograph of the rating plate
  • Error code or flashing-light pattern
  • Photographs of the filter, hose routing, disposal connection, leak location, or damaged component
  • A description of what the dishwasher does and does not do
  • Whether the appliance is under warranty or included in a recall
  • The part number printed on the old component, if it can be removed safely

Do not order from a symptom description alone. “Dishwasher drain pump” can refer to multiple shapes, connectors, mounting systems, and electrical specifications. Confirm compatibility through the manufacturer or a parts retailer’s model lookup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave a little water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

Some clean water can remain in the sump by design. Water covering the filter, dirty standing water, foul odor, or repeated failure to drain is not normal and should be investigated after disconnecting power.

Can I use regular dish soap in a dishwasher?

No. Hand dish soap creates excessive suds that can leak from the appliance and interfere with operation. Use fresh detergent formulated for automatic dishwashers.

Should I reset the dishwasher before repairing it?

You can use the cancel or reset procedure in the owner’s manual, but a reset clears a control state; it does not repair a blocked filter, failed pump, leak, heater, or safety fault. Do not repeatedly reset a machine with a leak, electrical smell, breaker trip, or water in its base.

How do I know whether a dishwasher part will fit?

Use the complete model number and, where applicable, the serial-number range. Match the manufacturer’s part number and connector or mounting details. Never rely on a generic description such as “fits most dishwashers.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a little water remain in the bottom of a dishwasher?

Some clean water can remain in the sump by design. Dirty water covering the filter, a foul odor, or repeated failure to drain indicates a drain problem that needs investigation.

No. Hand dish soap creates excessive suds that can cause leaks and poor operation. Use detergent made for automatic dishwashers.

Will resetting my dishwasher fix it?

A reset may clear a control state, but it will not fix a blocked filter, failed pump, leak, heater, or safety fault. Follow the model’s manual and do not repeatedly reset a hazardous appliance.

How do I know whether a replacement dishwasher part will fit?

Use the complete model number and, when relevant, the serial-number range. Match the manufacturer’s part number and connector or mounting details rather than relying on a generic fit claim.

The Bottom Line

Follow the symptom: check the door and power for a no-start problem; clean and inspect the complete drain path for standing water; check filters, spray arms, loading, water, and detergent for poor cleaning; and treat heating faults, leaks near electrical parts, breaker trips, burning smells, recalls, and control problems as service issues. Disconnect power before reaching inside and verify every replacement part by the exact model number.
