How to Remove Red Wine Stains: 7 Safe Methods for Clothes, Carpet, and Upholstery

Blot immediately; do not rub; do not apply heat until the stain is gone. Then choose the treatment for the actual surface. Washable clothing, carpet, upholstery, wool, silk, and dry-clean-only garments do not all tolerate the same red-wine stain remover.

Blot the spill immediately, never rub it, and keep heat away until the stain is completely gone. Red wine is easiest to remove while it is fresh, but the right treatment depends on whether it is on washable clothing, carpet, upholstery, wool, silk, or a dry-clean-only garment.

Use the method that matches the stained surface. Before applying any cleaner, check the care label, remove excess wine with a clean white absorbent material, and test the treatment in a hidden area.

What to do in the first 60 seconds

  1. Blot, do not scrub. Press a clean white cloth or plain white paper towel onto the spill to lift liquid from the surface.
  2. Work from the outside toward the center when blotting a small spot, which helps limit spreading.
  3. Replace the cloth as it becomes wet. Continue until little or no wine transfers.
  4. Do not apply heat. Do not use a dryer, iron, steamer, or hot-water treatment while any stain remains.
  5. Check the material. Washable clothing can usually be treated at home; silk, wool, vintage textiles, expensive upholstery, and dry-clean-only items require more caution.

A supply of white microfiber cleaning cloths is useful for this first response. White, unprinted material is important because colored or printed cloths can transfer dye to damp carpet or upholstery.

1. Blot the red wine with a clean white cloth

Blotting is the safest first step for nearly every surface. Lay the cloth over the wet area and press straight down. Lift the cloth, move to a clean section, and repeat. On carpet or upholstery, do not brush the fibers back and forth: scrubbing can spread the wine and damage or distort the fibers.

Keep working while the stain is still transferring. The goal is not to make the spot look perfect while it is wet; it is to remove as much liquid as possible before using a treatment.

2. Flush or soak washable clothing with cool water

For a washable shirt, tablecloth, napkin, or other garment, first blot the excess wine. Then sponge the stain with cool water or soak the garment in cool water for about 30 minutes, provided the care label permits it.

When possible, flush from the reverse side of the fabric. This encourages the wine to move out through the front rather than farther into the fibers. Do not stretch, twist, or aggressively rub the stained area, particularly on delicate or loosely woven fabric.

After soaking, move to a pretreatment step, then launder according to the care label. A stain that looks gone while the fabric is wet may become visible again as it dries, so do not treat appearance while wet as proof that the stain has been removed.

3. Pretreat with a laundry stain remover

After cool-water treatment, apply a prewash stain remover that is labeled for the garment and the type of fabric. Follow the product’s directions for how much to use and how long to leave it in place. Then wash according to the garment’s care instructions.

  3. Wait only for the label’s recommended dwell time.
  4. Wash using the care-label instructions.
  5. Inspect the garment in good light before putting it in the dryer.

If the stain remains, repeat the treatment rather than increasing the product amount or using heat. Do not combine stain-removal products. Use one product at a time and rinse as directed before trying another approach.

4. Use a dedicated red-wine stain remover

A purpose-made red-wine product can be convenient on compatible water-washable clothing, carpet, and upholstery. One example is Wine Away red wine stain remover. The manufacturer’s directions call for lightly shaking the bottle, saturating the stain, allowing roughly one to five minutes for the product to work, and blotting rather than rubbing. Clothing should then be laundered according to its care label.

Always read the label and test first in an inconspicuous location. The product is described for most water-washable fabrics, upholstery, and carpet, but wool and silk may develop a water ring. A product label cannot override a dry-clean-only instruction, and no stain remover can guarantee removal of every stain.

5. Treat carpet with a tested carpet spot cleaner

Carpet needs a controlled, low-moisture approach. Begin by blotting until you have removed as much wine as possible. Then choose a product labeled for your carpet type, test it in an inconspicuous area, and follow its directions exactly.

  1. Blot the spill with a clean white cloth or white paper towel.
  2. Pretest the carpet cleaner on a hidden section and let the test area dry.
  3. Apply enough product to treat the spot without unnecessarily soaking the backing or padding.
  4. Allow the stated dwell time; a dedicated red-wine product may specify approximately one to five minutes.
  5. Blot from the outside inward using clean sections of cloth.
  6. Remove residue as directed on the label and allow the area to dry fully.

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends looking for carpet-care products carrying its Seal of Approval because those products have undergone laboratory testing. Even with an approved product, pretesting remains important because carpet fibers, dyes, backings, and previous treatments vary.

A general alternative is OxiClean Carpet & Rug Stain Remover. It is a broader carpet-cleaning product rather than an exact red-wine-specific equivalent, so use it only where its label and your carpet-care guidance permit it. The manufacturer provides directions for red-wine treatment on carpet, clothing, and upholstery; pretest and follow the label.

6. Clean water-washable upholstery with dilute dish detergent

First check the upholstery cleaning code or the manufacturer’s care instructions. Do not use a water-based method on upholstery marked as solvent-clean-only or otherwise unsuitable for water. Never saturate delicate upholstery, because moisture can create rings, cause dye movement, or reach the cushion filling.

For compatible, washable upholstery, a commonly used dilute solution is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • approximately 1/2 teaspoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent; and
  • 2 cups of cool water.

Blot first, then lightly sponge the solution onto the stain. Blot until the liquid is absorbed, apply a small amount of cool water to rinse away detergent, and blot again until as dry as possible. Use the least moisture that works and avoid rubbing the fabric.

Test the solution on a hidden seam before treating the visible area. If the test changes the color or texture, stop. For a compatible surface, a dedicated product such as Wine Away may also be considered, but its label warns that wool or silk can develop a water ring.

7. Escalate dried, delicate, and dry-clean-only stains

Dried red-wine stains are harder to remove and may need repeated treatment. Repeated DIY attempts also increase the chance of fading, fiber damage, dye bleeding, shrinkage, or water rings. Stop experimenting when the item is valuable, delicate, large, or clearly unsuitable for water.

Choose professional care when the item is:

  • marked dry-clean-only;
  • made from silk, wool, velvet, leather, or another delicate fiber;
  • vintage, hand-dyed, antique, or expensive;
  • part of a large or difficult-to-remove upholstery covering;
  • affected by a large spill that has reached carpet padding or cushion filling; or
  • still stained after careful, label-directed treatment.

Take dry-clean-only clothing or specialty textiles to a dry cleaner for red wine stain treatment and identify the stain as red wine. Tell the cleaner exactly what you have already used, including detergent, stain remover, water, or any household remedy. For fixed carpet or upholstery, a professional carpet stain removal or upholstery cleaning service may be safer than repeatedly wetting the area yourself. Provider availability, pricing, and suitability vary by location and material.

Carpet or rug Blot, pretest a carpet-safe spot cleaner, treat, blot, dry Avoid scrubbing and excessive moisture
Water-cleanable upholstery Blot, use dilute detergent or a compatible dedicated product, rinse lightly, blot dry Check the cleaning code and do not saturate

Dry-clean-only garment Blot and take it to a cleaner promptly Do not soak or apply household chemicals unless the cleaner instructs you to

Reliable methods versus popular stain-removal hacks

Salt, white wine, club soda, baking soda, and hairspray are frequently suggested online. They should not be treated as guaranteed solutions. The reliable guidance for the surfaces covered here is more limited and more practical: blot promptly, use cool water where the care instructions allow it, pretreat or use a compatible labeled product, launder or rinse correctly, and avoid heat.

Do not pour several remedies onto the same stain. Mixing or layering cleaning products can create an unwanted chemical reaction, damage fibers, or make professional treatment more difficult. If one product does not work, rinse or remove it as directed before considering another—and stop if the material is delicate.

Why a stain can reappear after it seems gone

Red wine contains more than visible red pigment. Sugary beverage residue can remain in fibers and oxidize, later appearing yellow or brown. A mark can also look lighter while wet and become more apparent after drying. Treat and launder washable items even when the wet stain appears to have disappeared, then inspect before applying heat.

Portable option for events and travel

If spills are likely at weddings, dinners, or while traveling, travel stain remover packets or a wine-stain emergency kit can provide a quick first response. They are useful for buying time, not a substitute for checking the fabric label and completing the appropriate cleaning process later. Blot first, use the packet according to its directions, and do not assume a portable treatment makes silk, wool, or dry-clean-only fabric safe to wash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first thing to do when red wine spills?

Press a clean white cloth or plain white paper towel onto the spill and lift repeatedly. Replace the cloth as it becomes wet. Do not rub, scrub, or use heat.

Can cool water remove red wine from clothes?

Yes, if the garment is washable and its care label permits water. Sponge or soak it in cool water for about 30 minutes, pretreat, wash as directed, and inspect before drying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I dry clothes after treating a red-wine stain?

Do not put it in the dryer until the stain is gone. Heat can set remaining stain residue and make it much harder or impossible to remove.

How do I remove red wine from carpet?

Blot first, pretest a carpet-safe product in an inconspicuous area, apply it according to the label, and blot rather than scrub. Avoid saturating the carpet or backing.

How do I remove red wine from a sofa?

Check the upholstery cleaning code first. For compatible water-cleanable upholstery, use a dilute solution of about 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish detergent in 2 cups of cool water, then lightly sponge, blot, rinse lightly, and blot dry.

What should I do with red wine on silk, wool, or a dry-clean-only garment?

Blot the excess and take the item to a professional cleaner. Tell the cleaner it is a red-wine stain and disclose every product or household treatment already used.

The Bottom Line

The safest sequence is blot, test, treat, wash or rinse as directed, inspect, and never apply heat until the red-wine stain is gone. Match the method to the surface: cool water and pretreatment for washable clothing, a tested carpet product for rugs, light detergent for compatible upholstery, and professional care for delicate or dry-clean-only materials.
