How to Fix the Black Screen of Death on a Samsung TV

A Samsung TV black screen may be an input problem, HDMI fault, software glitch, backlight failure, or damaged panel. Use the TV menu test and symptom-based steps to find the cause safely.

A black Samsung TV screen does not identify one specific failure. The cause may be as simple as the wrong input or an inactive HDMI device, or as serious as a failed backlight, power supply, main board, One Connect Box, or display panel.

The fastest test is to press Home, Volume, or Source. If the TV displays its own menu, the screen is working and the problem is probably in the source, cable, port, or connected device. If no menu, logo, volume indicator, or test image appears—even after external devices are disconnected—the fault is more likely inside the TV.

First, identify which black-screen problem you have

Symptom Likely area Best first action
Sound works, but there is no picture or menu Backlight, power circuit, board, One Connect Box, or panel Power reset, then perform a flashlight test
No sound, picture, or response Outlet, power connection, startup fault, or internal board Test the outlet and the TV’s physical control
Only one HDMI input is black Cable, port, source device, or HDMI handshake Try another cable, port, and source
Built-in apps work but a console or cable box does not External device, HDMI cable, receiver, or output setting Connect the device directly to the TV
Samsung logo appears, then the screen goes black Software, backlight, power, or startup hardware Disconnect peripherals and power-reset the TV
Only part of the screen is black Panel, T-Con board, ribbon cable, or display circuitry Document the symptom and request service
The screen flickers, clicks, or repeatedly restarts Power, board, overheating, or boot problem Stop repeated power cycling and arrange service

“Black screen of death” is consumer terminology, not an official Samsung fault code. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance separates no-picture, external-device, partial-screen, HDMI, and One Connect problems, so the correct diagnosis depends on what the TV can still display. See Samsung’s no-picture troubleshooting guide.

Do these safe checks first

  1. Press the Power button on the TV itself, not only the remote.
  2. Press Home, Volume, and Source. Look for a menu, volume overlay, Samsung logo, source list, “No Signal” message, or any screen glow.
  3. Replace the remote batteries. If the TV responds to its physical control, the remote may be the problem.
  4. Disconnect every HDMI, USB, antenna, Ethernet, and optical device.
  5. Temporarily remove the surge protector or power strip and connect the TV directly to a known-working wall outlet.
  6. If the TV is installing firmware, do not repeatedly unplug or power-cycle it.

A “No Signal” message is useful evidence: it means the TV can display an image and the problem is probably the selected input or signal chain.

Perform a Samsung power reset

  1. Turn the TV off if it responds.
  2. Unplug it from the wall.
  3. Leave all external devices disconnected.
  4. Wait several minutes.
  5. Plug the TV directly into the outlet.
  6. Turn it on with the TV’s physical button.
  7. Press Home or Source before reconnecting accessories.

Some Samsung models respond to a long press of the physical power button, but button behavior differs by model. Do not assume that a particular 30-second sequence applies to every Samsung TV.

The expected result is a Samsung logo, Home screen, source menu, or no-signal message. If none appears with all peripherals removed, repeating the reset is unlikely to solve a hardware fault.

Check the source and HDMI connection

If the TV menu appears, work through the external signal path before resetting the television:

  1. Select the HDMI input actually used by the device.
  2. Make sure the cable box, console, Blu-ray player, or streaming stick is powered on and awake.
  3. Disconnect an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, adapter, or capture device. Connect the source directly to the TV.
  4. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  5. Try a known-good compatible HDMI cable.
  6. Try another HDMI input on the TV.
  7. Test a second source on the original input.
  8. Test the original source on a different television or display, if available.
Test result Most likely explanation
Menus and apps work; one HDMI device is black Source device, cable, HDCP handshake, or input selection
Menus work; every HDMI source fails HDMI port, board, software, or settings issue
One HDMI port fails while others work Port damage or a board fault
The same source fails on every port, but another source works Source device or its output settings
The TV menu is also absent TV software, power, One Connect Box, or internal hardware

A certified HDMI cable is not a guaranteed cure. A cable may be damaged, unsuitable for the source’s resolution or refresh rate, or connected to a failing port. On supported models, Samsung provides an HDMI cable test. A typical path on some 2022-and-newer TVs is All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Cable Test. Menu names and availability vary, and Samsung says the test is intended for cables shorter than approximately 2 metres (6 feet). Check the exact model manual or Samsung’s picture troubleshooting page.

Use the TV’s own tests

When the menu is visible, look for the following under Support, Device Care, or Self Diagnosis:

  • Picture Test: helps distinguish a TV display problem from an external signal problem.
  • HDMI Cable Test: checks a compatible HDMI connection where the model supports it.
  • Signal Information: shows whether the selected input is receiving a signal.
  • Sound Test: useful when audio is also intermittent or missing.
  • Software Update: checks for model-specific firmware.
  • Smart Hub reset: resets Smart Hub-related data and may sign you out of apps.
  • Factory data reset: erases accounts, apps, network details, settings, and personalized setup.

Samsung menu paths vary by model year, region, software version, and One Connect configuration. Search Samsung Support using the complete model number printed on the TV or its original documentation. A factory reset cannot repair a failed backlight, panel, port, or board, so it should be a late software step—not the first fix.

Update firmware carefully

If the TV remains usable, update through its Software Update menu. If normal updating is unavailable but the TV can read a USB drive, use the firmware download and installation instructions on the exact model’s Samsung support page.

  • Do not install firmware for a similar-looking model.
  • Follow the model-specific USB filename and installation instructions.
  • Do not interrupt power during the update.
  • If the screen went black immediately after an update, record the model number, software version if available, date, and exact symptoms before resetting anything.
  • Check Samsung’s model-specific support page for a corrective release; firmware fixes are not universal across Samsung TVs.

Test for a backlight-related failure

This test is most useful on Samsung LED, QLED, and Neo QLED televisions that use LED backlighting. It is less useful for Samsung OLED models, which do not use an LED backlight in the same way.

  1. Darken the room.
  2. Turn on the TV and play a known video source.
  3. Shine a bright flashlight obliquely across the screen.
  4. Look closely for a faint menu, logo, or moving image.

A faint image suggests a failed LED backlight, backlight driver, or related power circuit. No faint image does not prove the panel is defective: a main board, T-Con board, power supply, One Connect Box, panel, or software fault can produce similar symptoms. iFixit lists these as possible causes of sound-with-no-picture problems in its Samsung TV troubleshooting guide.

Interpret the standby light without overdiagnosing

  • No standby light: may indicate an outlet, power connection, or power fault—but some models have different indicator behavior.
  • Solid light: the TV may have power but may not be responding to the remote or completing startup.
  • Blinking light: can indicate a startup or power-related fault, but blink meanings are model-specific.
  • Clicking, cycling, or rebooting: points more toward power, board, overheating, or boot trouble than a wrong input.

A blinking red light alone does not identify a failed power board. If there is a burning smell, smoke, popping, visible damage, or repeated clicking, unplug the TV and stop troubleshooting.

Samsung TVs with a One Connect Box

On compatible models, inspect both ends of the proprietary One Connect cable and confirm that the box has power. Disconnect HDMI devices from the box temporarily. Follow Samsung’s model-specific instructions for isolating or testing the TV and box; do not substitute an arbitrary cable or sharply bend, pinch, or twist the One Connect cable.

If the TV still shows no image when isolated according to the correct procedure, request service. Samsung provides model-specific One Connect Box troubleshooting.

When a partial screen is black

If only one side, corner, strip, or section is black, check whether the TV’s own menu is cut off in the same area. A partial black region is unlikely to be fixed by changing inputs or performing repeated resets. Photograph or record the symptom and request service, particularly if the defect is visible on menus and built-in apps. Samsung advises service when the TV’s own menu is obscured by the black area.

What not to do

  • Do not open the TV casually. Internal components may retain dangerous electrical charge.
  • Do not press, tap, or flex the screen to “restore” the picture.
  • Do not use unofficial service-menu codes or random firmware files.
  • Do not keep resetting a television during a firmware update.
  • Do not assume an HDMI cable, blinking light, or flashlight result proves one particular failed part.
  • Do not buy replacement boards without matching the exact model and board revision.

Replacing a cable or changing a source is suitable for most owners. Backlight strips, power boards, T-Con boards, and main boards require model-specific knowledge and careful handling. Panel removal is especially risky because large LCD and OLED panels can break easily.

Repair or replace the TV?

Request a diagnosis before buying parts when the TV cannot display its own menu, has a partial black area, repeatedly restarts, or fails after power and source isolation. Samsung says repair cost depends on the diagnosis, warranty status, repair type, model, and location; there is no universal TV repair price. Its US repair service offers certified technicians, genuine parts where available, repair tracking, and a stated 90-day repair warranty. See Samsung Repair Services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair is generally more sensible when the TV is under warranty, premium, large, relatively recent, or has a suspected cable, One Connect, power, or board issue. Replacement becomes more reasonable when a technician confirms panel failure, parts are unavailable, the set is several years old, or the quote approaches the cost of a comparable new TV. Local labor, model, size, panel type, and replacement prices matter more than a universal age rule.

For a new eligible Samsung TV, Samsung Care+ terms and availability vary by product, purchase channel, state, and eligibility. It is not retroactive coverage for a failure that has already occurred. Review the current terms at Samsung Care+.

Prepare for Samsung support

Before requesting service, record:

  • Complete model and serial numbers
  • Purchase date and warranty status
  • Firmware version, if visible
  • Whether sound works
  • Whether the Home, Volume, or Source overlay appears
  • Standby-light behavior
  • Which sources, cables, and HDMI ports were tested
  • Whether the flashlight test showed a faint image
  • Photos or video of the screen, indicator, reboot loop, or partial black area

Use Samsung’s support contact options or a local authorized service route. The practical stop rule is simple: after disconnecting peripherals and completing one careful power reset, if the TV still cannot display its own menu or test image—or if only part of the panel is black—move from troubleshooting to warranty or professional service evaluation.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
