The most common causes are excessive or sudden electrical load and inadequate fuel supply, but restricted airflow, overdue maintenance, and control or mechanical faults are also possible.
This guide applies primarily to Generac air-cooled home standby generators, including Guardian and Next Generation models with Evolution or Power Zone 200 controllers. Before resetting the alarm, remove household loads and follow the correct no-load restart procedure. Do not adjust gas regulators, fuel pressure, wiring, or internal controls yourself.

Generac’s current support guidance groups Codes 1600 through 1603 with air-cooled home standby generators. Do not automatically apply this procedure to a portable, commercial, industrial, or liquid-cooled Generac unit. Identify the model and controller first using Generac’s manual and product lookup.
Quick, safe checklist
- Remove nonessential household loads.
- Do not restart the generator while it is powering the home.
- Check for a recently started air conditioner, heat pump, well pump, sump pump, heater, water heater, or other large motor load.
- Check the LP level or whether the natural-gas supply is operating normally.
- Clear visible snow, ice, leaves, dirt, or other obstructions around the intake and exhaust.
- Inspect the air filter if it is an owner-serviceable item for your model.
- Clear the alarm using the controller-specific sequence below.
- Restart with the generator disconnected from household loads.
- Reconnect essential loads gradually, one at a time.
If Code 1600 returns immediately, occurs repeatedly, or appears while the engine is running with no load, stop resetting it and contact a Generac Independent Authorized Service Dealer.
1. Make the generator safe before troubleshooting
During an outage, first determine whether the generator is carrying household loads. Turn off nonessential circuits according to the instructions for your transfer switch and generator. Follow Generac’s outage restart procedure, including the generator disconnect or main-line circuit breaker where applicable.
Never repeatedly restart a generator while the house remains under generator power. Do not start it under load. If the engine is hunting, surging, slowing, stalling, backfiring, or making unusual noises, do not add electrical loads.
Stop immediately and seek professional help if you smell gas, see exposed wiring, observe overheating, or are unsure whether the unit is connected to the home.
2. Check for overloads and sudden load changes
An overload or abrupt increase in demand can pull engine speed below the controller’s acceptable range. Common causes include:

- Incorrectly configured or malfunctioning load-management equipment
Turn off nonessential circuits and see whether the generator runs normally with only essential loads connected. If it does, restore circuits one at a time. Note which appliance or circuit causes the engine to slow down.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis test isolates the symptom; it does not prove that the generator itself is defective. A unit that runs without load but slows under load may have excessive demand, high motor-starting current, a fuel-pressure problem that appears only under load, a governor or actuator fault, or transfer-switch and load-management trouble. A dealer or qualified electrician may need to verify voltage, frequency, fuel delivery under load, generator sizing, and load-management operation.
3. Check the fuel supply
Liquid propane
Check the tank level and whether other gas appliances are operating normally. Generac notes that LP levels below 35% can affect performance. This is a troubleshooting guideline, not a universal cutoff at which every generator will fail.
Cold weather can reduce vaporization or expose an already marginal fuel supply. Also consider whether the regulator or fuel system was recently serviced, modified, or installed.
Natural gas
Check whether the home’s natural-gas service is operating normally and whether other appliances are consuming substantial gas. A utility interruption, inadequate pressure, incorrect fuel selection, or installation problem can cause underspeed.

Do not adjust a gas regulator or change fuel pressure yourself. Pressure measurement and regulator diagnosis require appropriate tools, qualifications, and attention to fuel-safety and code requirements. One current Generac air-cooled manual lists approximate inlet-pressure ranges of 10–12 inches water column for LP and 3.5–7.0 inches water column for NG, but the exact model and installation manual controls. See the model-specific Generac manual.

4. Check airflow and maintenance
Inspect the enclosure’s intake and exhaust areas for leaves, dirt, snow, ice, or other obstructions. Do not block ventilation openings or operate the unit with restricted exhaust.
Check the air filter and maintenance status if those are owner-serviceable items for your model. A dirty filter can reduce engine performance. Generac’s air-cooled maintenance-kit information generally recommends scheduled service every 200 operating hours or two years, whichever comes first, with more frequent service possible in dusty or dirty conditions. The exact owner’s manual takes priority; a maintenance kit is not a guaranteed repair for Code 1600.
Generac lists certain air-cooled models for operation in very cold or hot conditions, but published operating ranges are not a guarantee of normal performance during snow, icing, extreme cold, restricted airflow, or marginal fuel conditions.
5. Clear Code 1600
Evolution controller
For the Evolution procedure described by Generac:
- Press OFF.
- Press ENTER twice.
- Press AUTO.
The generator may then be started with the blue MANUAL button, but only after household loads have been removed. Confirm the exact sequence in the owner’s manual for your controller version. See Generac’s Code 1600 guidance.
Power Zone 200 controller
- Ensure the generator is not connected to household loads.
- Hold the OFF button for approximately three seconds.
- Confirm that the alarm has cleared.
- Return the unit to AUTO or start it manually according to the outage procedure.
Restore household loads only after the engine is running normally and has reached stable speed.
6. Restart and restore loads gradually
After clearing the alarm, start the generator with the home disconnected or with household loads removed as directed by the transfer-switch instructions. Let it reach full speed and run normally before reconnecting anything.

Restore essential circuits one at a time. Wait between circuits and watch for renewed slowing, surging, or another alarm. If a particular circuit triggers Code 1600, leave it off and arrange professional diagnosis rather than repeatedly resetting the generator.
What if Code 1600 happens during an exercise cycle?
The correct troubleshooting path depends on the controller and exercise configuration. Guardian-series generators with Evolution controllers generally do not exercise under load, so an overload is less likely to be the primary cause during that cycle. Some Next Generation air-cooled generators with Power Zone 200 controllers may be configured through Mobile Link to exercise under load, making load-related troubleshooting relevant.
If the problem began after installation or fuel-system work, tell the installer or dealer. Possible factors include air remaining in fuel lines, incorrect fuel selection, a recent fuel-system modification, incorrect installation, or seasonal changes exposing marginal fuel pressure.
For a unit installed within the last year, Generac recommends contacting the installer. For older installations that continue to fault after basic checks, contact an IASD.
If the generator runs unloaded but fails under load
This pattern points toward a load, fuel-capacity, transfer, or load-management issue, but it does not confirm a diagnosis. Run the generator with nonessential loads disconnected, confirm stable operation, and restore essential circuits one at a time.

Should you perform a hard reset?
Usually not as the first response. Generac states that most error codes do not require a hard reset. A hard reset can help recover a blank, frozen, or unresponsive controller, but it does not repair an actual underspeed condition caused by overload, low fuel pressure, restricted airflow, or a mechanical or control fault.

When to call a Generac dealer
Arrange professional service when:
- Code 1600 returns after a correct no-load reset.
- The engine slows or stalls with no household load connected.
- The alarm occurs repeatedly during every exercise cycle.
- The unit surges, hunts, backfires, or makes unusual noises.
- You smell gas or suspect a leak.
- Fuel pressure must be measured or adjusted.
- The fault began after installation or fuel-system work.
- The generator will not restart during an outage.
- Additional alarms appear.
- The transfer switch, electrical panel, actuator, regulator, controller, or wiring requires testing.
Generac lists U.S. and Canada customer support at 1-888-436-3722. A qualified local service dealer is the appropriate choice for fuel, electrical, controller, and load testing.
Portable and liquid-cooled Generac generators are different
Do not use the Evolution or Power Zone 200 reset sequence on every Generac product. Generac’s Code 1600 support article is directed at air-cooled home standby generators. Portable-generator troubleshooting uses different procedures, such as starting with no appliances connected and checking breakers, GFCI receptacles, choke position, and cables; see Generac’s portable-generator guidance.

Liquid-cooled, commercial, and industrial systems may use different controllers and service procedures. Identify the model, serial number, fuel type, frequency, and controller before following model-specific instructions.
Monitoring and maintenance options
Mobile Link can provide status, history, and alarm notifications, which may help show whether Code 1600 is recurring. It cannot correct an underspeed condition or replace service. Generac’s published Mobile Link plans and pricing can change, so check the current official plan information before subscribing.
Routine maintenance kits can support scheduled owner maintenance where permitted, but they do not replace fuel-pressure testing, electrical diagnosis, controller repair, or load testing. Replacement is not the normal response to one Code 1600 alarm; consider it only after a dealer identifies a major or uneconomical repair.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Generac Code 1600 means the engine is underspeed. Remove household loads, check for sudden electrical demand, verify the fuel supply, inspect airflow and maintenance items, and use the reset sequence for the correct controller. Restart with no load and restore circuits gradually. If the alarm returns, occurs with no load, or involves fuel, wiring, unusual engine behavior, or additional faults, stop resetting the unit and call a qualified Generac service dealer.
