You can fix a small, shallow drywall defect without installing a separate patch: fill it with spackling compound, let it dry, sand it smooth, then prime or paint as needed. This works for nail holes, small dings and minor dents—not for a sizeable opening through the board. An unsupported hole needs reinforcement or a drywall repair that spans the missing area.
When you can skip a drywall patch
Direct spackling is appropriate when the damage is shallow and small enough for compound to fill without bridging a substantial void. DAP uses dings under 1 inch as an example of damage that can be filled with spackling alone. That is a manufacturer’s rule of thumb, not a universal cutoff; the depth and support around the opening matter too. DAP’s repair guide
If drywall is missing through the board, compound alone may sag or fail. Choose a method that supports the repair rather than piling on more compound. RONA’s drywall repair guidance distinguishes small clean holes from larger damage that requires replacing drywall.
What you need for a small defect
- Spackling compound suitable for small holes. DAP names FAST DRY Premium Spackling for this use.
- A putty knife for pressing in and smoothing the compound.
- Sandpaper for smoothing the dry repair, plus a way to remove sanding dust.
- Primer and paint, as appropriate for the compound and the existing finish.

How to fill a small hole without a patch
- Check the damage. Proceed only if it is a small, shallow defect that can be filled directly. If the opening goes through the board or leaves a sizeable unsupported gap, use a reinforced or drywall-based repair instead.
- Prepare the surface. Remove loose material and smooth rough edges. Make sure the area is clean and dry.
- Apply spackling. Use a putty knife to press compound into the defect, then smooth the surface. Follow the product label; do not treat spackling as a substitute for support across a larger opening.
- Let it dry and sand. Allow the compound to dry for the time and conditions specified on its label. Sand the repair smooth and remove the dust.
- Prime or paint as needed. Follow the compound and paint manufacturers’ directions. DAP notes that some paint manufacturers recommend primer on certain surfaces. Texture, paint match and lighting can affect how visible the finished repair is.
What to do if the hole is too large
For an open hole that compound cannot fill securely, select a repair that bridges or replaces the missing drywall. The right choice depends on the opening and the support available around it.

These categories are practical guidance, not fixed engineering thresholds. If the opening is unsupported, use a method designed to span or replace the missing board rather than attempting to fill it with compound alone.
