How to Fix a Samsung Refrigerator Ice Maker: A Step-by-Step Guide

A safe, model-aware sequence for diagnosing a Samsung refrigerator that is not making ice, from control settings and water flow to testing and service.

If your Samsung refrigerator is not making ice, start by checking that ice production is enabled, the bucket is seated, and the water supply is flowing. Then run the correct model-specific ice-maker test once. Do not assume the ice-maker assembly has failed: a locked control, restricted filter, kinked line, or low household water pressure can cause similar symptoms.

Before you troubleshoot: identify your refrigerator

Samsung uses different ice-maker locations, control panels, test buttons, and reset procedures across refrigerator models. Find the full model number on the appliance label and use the matching manual before pressing unfamiliar controls, removing components, or ordering a part. Samsung’s US, Canadian, and UK guidance is not identical, and product configurations can vary by market.

1. Check that ice production is turned on

Look for an Ice Off indicator, a lock symbol, or a setting that disables ice production. Depending on the model, the control may be a dedicated Ice Maker or Ice Off button, a long-press or cycling action, or a setting in Family Hub’s Fridge Manager. Dual-ice-maker models may show a separate status for each maker. Use the exact instructions in your model’s manual rather than copying a button sequence from another refrigerator. Samsung Canada’s ice-maker troubleshooting guide describes examples of these model differences.

2. Check the ice bucket, doors, and visible obstructions

  • Confirm the ice bucket is seated correctly. On some models, an incorrectly installed bucket can trigger an Ice Off indication; the display behavior varies.
  • If the bin contains clumped ice or ice piled at one end, clear it and reinstall the bucket as directed by the manual. Do not force a stuck or frozen assembly.
  • Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed while production recovers. Warm air entering through an open door can slow freezing.

Samsung UK’s guidance on a nonworking ice maker notes that ice buildup can obstruct the container and that ice piled at one end may interrupt production. Avoid changing freezer temperature or turning on Power Freeze unless your model’s operating guidance supports it.

3. Verify the water supply and flow

Check the line and shutoff valve

Make sure the water line is connected, not kinked, and that the household shutoff valve is fully open. If the problem began after moving the refrigerator or changing its water line, check the supply before suspecting a failed ice maker. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance uses 20 psi as a minimum in this context and recommends contacting a plumber if adequate pressure cannot be confirmed. Reverse-osmosis systems can also leave pressure too low for the refrigerator.

For RS27T and RS22T model families, Samsung identifies crossed water-line connections as a possible installation-related cause of water and ice dispensing problems. Check this only on those families, particularly if symptoms began after installation. See Samsung US troubleshooting guidance.

Use the dispenser flow check, if your model has one

Samsung’s US check is whether the refrigerator dispenses at least 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) of water in less than 10 seconds. If flow is weak, its guide suggests retesting with the filter removed. If flow improves only without an old filter, replace it with a filter compatible with the refrigerator. If even a new filter allows adequate flow only when removed, household pressure may be too low. Do not leave the filter out indefinitely if your model’s manual requires one.

Consider the filter only when flow points to it

An old or restrictive filter can reduce water flow, but replacing a filter will not fix every ice-maker problem. Samsung rates its filters at 300 gallons, or about six months for average household use, and says to use Samsung-brand filters. Match the replacement to the full refrigerator model and use the flow check to determine whether restriction is a plausible cause. Samsung’s US water-filter guidance provides its filter-use information.

4. Run the correct ice-maker test once

Locate the Test button using your model’s manual; its position and test duration vary. Samsung’s US guidance describes a test of about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment maker. Samsung Canada describes an approximately six-minute cycle for its sequence. Follow the instructions for your exact model and wait for the expected chime or movement.

  1. Remove the ice bucket if the manual says it is needed to access the test button.
  2. Press and hold the model’s Test button for the duration or until the confirmation sound or movement described in the manual.
  3. If there is no response, Samsung advises unplugging the refrigerator or switching it off at the circuit breaker for two minutes, restoring power, and trying the test again.
  4. If an error code appears after power is restored, follow the manual’s error-code instructions. If the test is correctly performed but the ice maker remains completely unresponsive, contact Samsung support or service.

Do not keep pressing Test once the tray has filled with water or ice: Samsung warns that repeated tests can overflow the tray or jam and damage the ice maker. One US support page advises resetting no more than once per day. The official instruction for a freezer-door ice maker is: “Do not press Test repeatedly after the ice tray is filled with ice or water.” See Samsung’s US reset instructions for that ice-maker type.

5. Allow time for production to recover

Samsung Canada says ice should begin appearing within about eight hours after its troubleshooting sequence, while normal quantities may take up to 24 hours to return. Samsung UK says initial production after a new installation can take several hours, with longer for the bucket to fill. These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees; model, temperature, use, and water flow affect the result. Dispensing ice occasionally may help prevent it from piling up in one part of the bucket.

What different ice-maker symptoms can mean

No ice at all

Work through the enabled setting, bucket seating, water connection and flow, and model-specific test. If the test still gets no response or produces an error code, use Samsung support or service rather than ordering an unverified assembly.

Small or shattered cubes

Samsung says low water pressure can limit how much water enters before freezing. Recheck the fully open valve, line for kinks, and filter if fitted.

Cloudy or white cubes

Samsung says cloudy ice can be normal with its rapid-freezing technology: small amounts of minerals, oxygen, and nitrogen can be trapped in the ice. The company says those minerals are not harmful.

Clumped ice or ice that will not dispense

Clear clumps and reinstall the bucket according to the manual. Do not force parts or repeatedly test a full tray.

Buzzing but no water

Samsung UK notes that an ice maker may buzz when activated but not receive water. Return to the connection, valve, line, filter, and pressure checks.

When to call for help

Contact Samsung support or a qualified appliance repair professional if the correctly performed test still leaves the ice maker unresponsive, an error remains unresolved, or a mechanism appears stuck. Contact a plumber if household supply pressure or the water line is the problem. For model-specific parts or warranty questions, have the full model number and local market information available; the symptom alone does not establish which replacement part is needed.
