To fix a leaky two-handle faucet, first locate where water escapes and identify whether the faucet uses a compression stem or a cartridge. Shut off both supply valves before disassembly. A drip from the spout often points to a worn sealing part inside the valve; water around a handle may involve a bonnet, O-ring, stem seal, or cartridge. Replace only a part confirmed to fit your faucet, then reassemble and check for leaks.
Start with the leak location and faucet type
Where the water appears is a useful clue, but it does not identify the failed part by itself. Note whether the faucet drips from the spout while off, leaks near a handle, or leaks only while water is running. Then look for the faucet brand and model and determine whether its valves use compression stems or cartridges. Two-handle faucets do not all share the same internal parts or repair procedure.

- Spout drip while off: A compression faucet may have a worn stem washer or faucet seat. A cartridge faucet may have a faulty cartridge or seal.
- Leak around or under a handle: Depending on the design, the cause may be a bonnet, stem seal, O-ring, valve, or cartridge. The remedy can vary by model.
If the model is unclear, use the manufacturer’s parts-identification guidance; for Delta products, see Find Parts and Identify Your Product. Do not buy a replacement solely because it looks similar to the old part.

- Find the hot- and cold-water shutoff valves beneath the sink and close them. If the faucet still receives water, stop; do not disassemble it until the supply is safely isolated.
- Open the faucet briefly to relieve remaining pressure, then close it.
- Cover the drain so screws and small parts cannot fall into it. Gather the correct screwdriver or wrench for the fasteners, and protect the faucet finish from tool marks.
- Take photos as you remove parts, especially their orientation and order. Keep screws and small pieces together.
Fix a spout drip on a compression-style faucet
Danco’s two-handle faucet repair guide describes inspecting the stem washer and faucet seat on a compression-style valve. The hot or cold side that is leaking can help identify which valve to inspect; isolate the supply as needed, and shut off the faucet’s supply before taking it apart.

- Remove the handle and stem, keeping track of how the pieces fit together.
- Inspect the washer at the end of the stem. If it is flattened or grooved, replace it with a washer matched to the faucet.
- Inspect the faucet seat as well. A worn or damaged seat may also need replacement; a new washer alone may not stop the drip if the seat is worn.
- Match the removed stem or parts to the faucet model or the manufacturer’s parts guidance before buying replacements.
- Reassemble the valve, restore the water, and check the spout and repaired area for leaks.
Fix a spout drip on a cartridge-style faucet
A cartridge faucet needs a replacement matched to its faucet model or to the cartridge removed from the valve. Some designs also use separate seats and springs. Danco’s cartridge-type stem guide covers removal and replacement; follow the faucet maker’s instructions for the specific assembly.
- Shut off the water and remove the handle.
- Remove the retaining ring or nut, if the design uses one, then pull out the cartridge.
- Use the old cartridge or exact faucet model to identify the compatible replacement. Check whether the valve also uses separate seats or springs.
- Install the replacement in the orientation specified by the manufacturer. For example, Moen’s instructions for its 1234 two-handle kitchen faucet cartridge say to align the cartridge tabs with the notches in the valve body; see Moen’s 1234 cartridge guide.
- Reassemble, restore the water, and check the spout and valve area for leaks.
Address a leak around or under a handle
A handle-area leak can have several causes, so check the faucet model and the maker’s procedure rather than assuming the cartridge is always at fault. Delta’s guidance for a described two-handle faucet advises trying the bonnet and replacing the stem if needed; the correct stem orientation depends on the handle style. Before replacing anything, note whether the leak occurs with the faucet off or only while water is flowing, and confirm the replacement against the model. If the maker specifies stem orientation or cartridge alignment, follow those instructions during reassembly.

- Make sure the faucet is fully reassembled before reopening the supply valves.
- Open the hot and cold shutoffs slowly and check beneath the sink for escaping water.
- Run the faucet, then turn it off and inspect the spout, handle area, and connections again.
- If the leak remains, shut the water off and recheck part compatibility, orientation, and assembly against the faucet maker’s instructions. A continuing leak may indicate another worn sealing surface or a different failed part.
When to stop and get help
- A supply valve does not stop water from reaching the faucet.
- Parts are badly corroded or cannot be removed without risking damage.
- You cannot identify the faucet model or confirm a compatible replacement part.
- The leak continues after correct reassembly and the cause is still unclear.
In these cases, pause rather than forcing a fastener or fitting an unverified part. Obtain model-specific help or ask a plumber to assess the faucet.
