How to Fix a Leaf Blower That Won’t Start or Keeps Stalling

Use the blower’s power source and model manual to diagnose no-start and stalling problems. Check fuel and choke on petrol models, airflow and spark where permitted, and battery or corded power before seeking service.

Start with the blower’s power source and exact model: petrol, battery, and corded machines have different causes and safe checks. For a petrol blower, stale or incorrect fuel, the wrong choke position, restricted airflow, a fouled spark plug, or a fuel-delivery problem can prevent starting or cause a stall. For battery and corded models, first check the battery or power connection. Follow the operator manual for your model; stop and contact an authorized dealer when the fault involves a leak, internal damage, or work the manual does not assign to the owner.

If you are asking, “Why won’t my leaf blower start?” or “Why does it start and then die?”, begin with the symptom and the power source rather than replacing parts at random. A few manual-directed checks can help narrow the possibilities, but there is no single fix or fuel mixture that applies to every blower.

Identify the power source before troubleshooting

Find the model number and operator manual before inspecting or replacing parts. The manual determines the correct fuel and mixture, starting sequence, serviceable components, and maintenance procedure. Do not apply one manufacturer’s fuel ratio or repair instructions to another blower.

  • Petrol: Check fuel, choke and starting controls, airflow, spark plug, and fuel delivery, using only owner-maintenance steps in the manual.
  • Battery: Check charge, condition, and seating. Remove the battery before maintenance.
  • Corded electric: Check the outlet or power source and plug connection. Do not open the motor housing for a no-start fault.

Before you begin, note exactly what happens when you try to use the blower. Does the engine not fire at all, briefly catch and stop, run only with the choke in a particular position, die when tilted, or run but lose power? Is the machine petrol, battery, or corded? These differences help you choose the relevant checks. They do not prove a specific part has failed: the same symptom can have more than one cause, and the manufacturer’s instructions for your model take priority.

Make the blower safe to inspect

Turn the blower off and let hot parts cool before checking it. Work in a ventilated area, keep clear of moving parts, and disconnect the spark plug before petrol-engine maintenance. Remove the battery before battery-blower maintenance. Never test for spark near fuel or bypass a safety control.

STIHL warns that a loose spark-plug boot can arc and ignite combustible fumes. It also says not to operate a blower unless its tube is correctly mounted. Do not run the machine with its tube removed or improperly fitted. See the STIHL handheld blower safety manual.

Keep the troubleshooting limited to checks and maintenance the operator manual assigns to the owner. Do not keep trying to start a machine that appears damaged or unsafe. If you find a fuel leak, stop and seek qualified help rather than running the blower to see whether it clears. For petrol maintenance, disconnect the spark plug as directed; for battery maintenance, remove the battery. Those precautions reduce the chance of an unintended start while you inspect the machine.

Why won’t my leaf blower start?

Petrol blower: confirm fuel and starting procedure

  1. Check the fuel. Make sure fuel is present, fresh, and the type or mixture specified in the operator manual. If the fuel is old or incorrect, replace it according to the manual. Do not top up or mix fuel by guessing at a ratio: specifications can differ by model.
  2. Repeat the model’s cold-start sequence. Check the prescribed choke and starting-control positions. Do not assume the sequence is the same across brands or models. If the manual gives separate procedures for a cold and warm engine, use the one that matches the situation.
  3. Inspect the air filter and spark plug if the manual allows it. Clean or replace only as directed, and use parts specified for the model. A restricted filter or fouled plug is one possible cause, not proof that the part is the problem.
  4. Consider flooding if it smells strongly of fuel. A strong fuel smell at the muffler with an engine that will not fire can indicate a flooded engine. Use the model-specific recovery procedure rather than repeatedly changing controls or guessing at a fix. Husqvarna describes this fault in its engine-flooding guidance.

If the fuel and starting sequence are correct and the basic checks do not resolve a no-start, do not jump straight to adjusting the carburetor or dismantling the engine. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish one universal carburetor procedure. Use the manufacturer’s service path when the fault requires work beyond the manual’s owner-maintenance instructions.

Battery blower: check charge, condition, and fit

  1. Confirm the battery is charged and undamaged.
  2. Check that it is seated correctly in the blower.
  3. Remove the battery before performing any maintenance.
  4. If the blower still will not run, follow the manufacturer’s inspection or service path rather than dismantling the machine.

These checks are deliberately limited: manufacturer guidance supports confirming charge, condition, and seating, but does not support opening a battery blower or attempting internal electrical repairs. If the battery is damaged, do not treat repeated insertion or charging as a repair; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Corded blower: check the supply

  1. Confirm the outlet or other power source works.
  2. Check that the plug is fully connected.
  3. If it still will not run, seek manufacturer service instead of opening the motor housing.

For a corded machine, a no-start investigation begins with the power source and connection. If those basic checks do not explain the problem, the appropriate next step is manufacturer service, not opening the motor housing.

Why does my leaf blower start and then die?

Husqvarna’s UK support page says that when its blower starts and stops after a few seconds, “the engine is not getting the right mix of fuel, air or spark.” That is a useful way to group the checks, not a diagnosis of any one model. Work through them in order, following the manual.

Start with what changed between starting and stalling. If the engine catches and stops after a few seconds, check the choke position required after startup and the freshness and specification of the fuel. Then inspect airflow and, if applicable and owner-serviceable, the spark arrestor. If the blower stops only when tilted, fuel pickup or fuel-line concerns may be relevant. A symptom narrows the checklist but cannot establish the exact fault without model-specific diagnosis.

Move the choke to RUN after startup

Once the engine starts, check whether the model’s instructions call for moving the choke to RUN or its equivalent. Leaving the choke on can make some petrol blowers stop. Husqvarna and RYOBI identify an incorrect post-start choke position as a possible cause; RYOBI’s advice applies to the petrol blowers covered by its support article, not every blower. Read Husqvarna’s start-and-die guidance and RYOBI Australia’s poor-running guidance.

Do not assume that every choke control is labelled or moved in the same way. Follow the instructions for your model, including any prescribed sequence for changing from the starting position to normal running. If the blower keeps stopping after you follow that sequence, move on to the other manual-authorized checks rather than leaving the choke in a starting position as a workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace stale or incorrect fuel

Old fuel or a fuel type or mixture that does not match the manual can contribute to poor running. Use fresh fuel prepared to the exact model’s specification. Do not generalize a ratio from another brand: RYOBI Australia states 50:1 for the specific models covered in its article, not for every petrol blower. STIHL USA warns that fuel with more than 10% ethanol may damage STIHL equipment; that warning is specific to STIHL equipment, not a universal rule for all makes.

Check the model manual or the manufacturer’s guidance before preparing replacement fuel. If you have been using fuel of uncertain age or specification, replacing it according to those instructions is a more relevant first check than buying an unrelated part. The manufacturer sources cited here do not provide a universal storage interval, a universal ratio, or one fuel formulation for all petrol blowers, so do not infer those from another brand’s instructions.

Check airflow, then the spark arrestor if fitted

Inspect the intake and air filter for blockage, and clean or replace the filter only as the manual directs. If the model has a spark arrestor, check it only if the manual permits owner service. Husqvarna notes that not every model has an arrestor; do not search for or remove one unless your model includes it and the instructions describe the check.

Airflow is a distinct check from fuel and spark. Look for obvious blockage at the intake and follow the manufacturer’s filter maintenance directions. If the filter is damaged or due for replacement under the manual’s directions, identify the correct part by model. Do not assume the blower has a spark arrestor simply because another model does, and do not clean or remove an arrestor using a procedure that is not authorized for your machine.

Consider fuel delivery if it stalls when tilted

A blower that dies when tilted may have a fuel filter that does not remain in the fuel or a fuel-line problem. Filter fit, fuel-line length, and flexibility can matter, and those specifications are model-dependent. Use the manual to determine whether this is an owner-serviceable check; refer the blower to a dealer if the manual directs you to do so or the fault persists. See Husqvarna US Help Center’s start-and-die guidance.

Because filter placement and line specifications matter, do not substitute a generic filter or reshape a line based on appearance. If the manual identifies a fuel filter as a serviceable replacement, confirm the correct part and procedure for the exact model. If it does not, or if reaching the part involves repair work beyond your skill or the manual’s scope, use an authorized dealer or qualified service professional.

What to check when a blower runs poorly or loses power

  1. Look for blocked airflow. Inspect the intake and air filter for debris or restriction. Follow the manual for cleaning or replacement.
  2. Verify fuel. Confirm it is fresh and matches the model’s specified type or mixture.
  3. Inspect the spark plug if permitted. Use the manual’s instructions and specified replacement part; do not improvise a plug specification.
  4. Escalate unresolved fuel or engine problems. If the basic checks do not explain the loss of power, use the manufacturer’s service route rather than making an unsupported adjustment.

A useful order is to start with checks that the manual clearly allows: intake and filter, correct fuel, and the spark plug if it is owner-serviceable. This is a diagnostic order, not a claim that one item is more likely to fail or that one fix will work on every machine. If a check does not reveal a problem, do not replace the part anyway merely because it appears on a troubleshooting list.

Carburetor adjustment is not a first-line guess. The manufacturer guidance cited here supports checking fuel, choke, airflow, spark, and fuel delivery, but does not establish a universal carburetor procedure or a single fix that works across models.

Choose replacement parts by model, not appearance

A replacement may be appropriate when inspection and the manual point to a worn or damaged component. Air filters, spark plugs, and in-tank fuel filters are model-specific, not universal. Confirm the exact product model and part specification in the operator manual or manufacturer parts lookup before buying or fitting anything. Replacing parts without a symptom-based reason can add cost without resolving the fault.

If the diagnosis points to an air filter, a search such as “leaf blower air filter replacement” may help you find the relevant category, but it does not establish fit. Check the part number and compatibility against the product model before ordering. The same compatibility check applies to spark plugs and fuel filters. Do not choose a part only because its shape looks similar or because a listing says it fits a different model.

The cited manufacturer guidance provides no parts prices, labor rates, or reliable estimate of repair cost. A symptom-based check can help avoid spending money on an unsupported replacement, but a dealer or service provider would need to inspect the machine and identify the repair before quoting a cost. There is no evidence here to rank repair methods by price or success rate.

Compare the troubleshooting path to the symptom

Power source or symptom First manual-directed checks What not to assume
Petrol, will not start Fresh and correct fuel; specified starting sequence and choke; air filter and spark plug if owner-serviceable; flooding procedure if strongly fuel-smelling. That a fuel ratio or starting sequence from another model applies.
Petrol, starts then dies Move choke to RUN or equivalent when directed; verify fuel; inspect airflow and a spark arrestor only if fitted and serviceable. That the symptom proves one particular component has failed.
Petrol, stalls when tilted Consider fuel-filter position and fuel-line issues; check whether the manual permits owner service. That a generic filter or line will fit or operate correctly.
Battery, will not start Check charge, condition, and seating; remove battery before maintenance. That internal electrical or battery repair is an owner task.
Corded electric, will not start Check the outlet or power source and plug connection. That opening the motor housing is an appropriate next step.

This comparison is a way to select the relevant first checks, not a ranking of repair methods. The sources provide no universal success rates or single most effective fix. The correct service level depends on the model and on what the manual authorizes.

When to stop and get service

Contact an authorized dealer or qualified service professional if you find a fuel leak, see damage, suspect internal engine damage, or the manual does not authorize the repair. Also escalate a problem that continues after the manual’s basic owner checks. Do not keep operating a blower that appears unsafe or make repairs that require opening components the manual reserves for service.

It is particularly important to stop rather than experiment when a fault involves fuel leakage, suspected engine damage, or a persistent stalling problem that remains after the prescribed basic checks. Do not bypass safety controls, run the blower without its properly mounted tube, or test for spark near fuel. If you are unsure whether a filter, spark plug, arrestor, or other part is owner-serviceable, check the model’s manual or ask the manufacturer or dealer before proceeding.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my leaf blower start and then die after a few seconds?

Possible checks include whether the choke is moved to RUN after startup as the manual directs, whether the fuel is fresh and correct for the model, and whether airflow is restricted. A spark arrestor may be relevant only if the model has one and the manual permits owner service. These symptoms do not identify one certain cause, so work through the model-specific instructions.

Why won’t my petrol leaf blower start?

Check for fresh fuel of the type or mixture specified by the manual, then follow the correct starting sequence and choke positions. Inspect the air filter and spark plug only as the manual allows. If there is a strong fuel smell at the muffler and the engine will not fire, flooding is one possibility; follow the exact model’s recovery procedure rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my blower stall when I tilt it?

On a petrol blower, a fuel filter that does not remain in the fuel or a fuel-line problem may contribute to stalling when tilted. Filter fit and fuel-line dimensions or flexibility are model-dependent. Use the manual to decide whether this check is owner-serviceable, and contact a dealer if the manual directs you to do so or the problem persists.

Can I use a 50:1 mixture in any petrol leaf blower?

No. RYOBI Australia states 50:1 for the specific models covered by its support article; it is not a universal ratio. Use only the fuel specification in the operator manual for your exact model. Similarly, STIHL USA’s warning about fuel with greater than 10% ethanol applies to STIHL equipment, not automatically to all brands.

How much does it cost to fix a leaf blower that will not start?

The manufacturer guidance cited here provides no repair prices, labor rates, or cost estimates. Costs depend on the model and the fault, and the cited guidance does not support a reliable estimate without diagnosis. Before buying a replacement air filter, spark plug, or fuel filter, confirm that the manual and symptoms support the part and verify its model-specific fit.

The Bottom Line

Match the checks to the power source and symptom, and use the exact model’s manual. For petrol models, verify fuel and choke first, then check airflow, spark, or fuel delivery only as authorized. For battery and corded blowers, start with charge and connection checks. Stop for leaks, damage, persistent faults, or work the manual does not assign to the owner.
