A dryer that stopped working needs a symptom-specific check: first note whether it has power, whether the drum turns, whether it heats, and whether it shuts off mid-cycle. A dryer that will not start has different likely causes from one that runs without heat or dries too slowly. Start with safe, external checks; use the exact model’s manual or a qualified technician for internal faults.
Start by identifying what stopped working
Before changing settings or inspecting anything, note what happens when you try to run the dryer:
- No lights or display: check the power connection and household breaker or fuse.
- Lights come on, but the drum does not turn: check the door, control lock, selected cycle, and Start procedure. If those are correct, the fault may need model-specific diagnosis.
- The drum turns but there is no heat: confirm that the selected cycle is supposed to heat, then check the dryer’s supply and, for a gas dryer, the gas shutoff valve.
- It heats but clothes stay damp or take too long: check the load, cycle, lint screen, and exhaust airflow.
- It stops during a cycle or runs again only after cooling: overheating from restricted exhaust is one possible cause; a component fault is also possible.
These checks are general guidance, not a diagnosis. Brand, model, error codes, and whether the dryer is gas or electric affect the right repair.
If the dryer will not start
Check power and household protection
Make sure the dryer’s power cord is firmly connected and check whether a breaker has tripped or a fuse has blown. Do not remove covers or probe a live outlet. If a circuit is overloaded or you suspect a supply-voltage problem, contact a qualified electrician. Frigidaire advises: Do not use an extension cord.
It also says not to increase the fuse capacity; follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your appliance and household circuit.

Check the door, controls, and cycle
Close the door fully and make sure clothing or debris is not preventing the latch from engaging. Turn off Control Lock if it is enabled, select an appropriate cycle, then press and hold Start as the model’s manual specifies. The required hold time is not universal: Whirlpool gives two to five seconds in its guidance, while Frigidaire gives two seconds.
If the dryer still does not start after these checks, the problem may involve a door switch, motor, control, or another model-specific part. Those are possibilities, not a remote diagnosis; consult the manual or arrange service rather than replacing parts by guesswork.

If the dryer runs but does not heat
Rule out the cycle and supply first
Confirm that you selected a heated cycle. Air-only or other no-heat settings are designed not to heat. For an electric dryer, Whirlpool says the appliance requires a 240-volt supply and notes that its circuit uses two breakers; a supply issue can affect heating. For a gas dryer, check that the gas shutoff valve is open. If you suspect an electrical supply fault, have a qualified electrician check it.
When basic checks do not explain the fault
A failed heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat, timer, or another internal component may be responsible, depending on the model. Manufacturer guidance cautions that identifying the source can require expert support. Do not treat any one part as a universal fix.

If the dryer heats but clothes take too long to dry
Check the cycle, load, and airflow path
Make sure the cycle suits the load and that the dryer is not overloaded. Clean the lint screen according to the owner’s manual. Then check the exhaust path, including the duct and outdoor outlet, for lint buildup, a crushed or obstructed duct, or an exterior damper that cannot open properly. Restricted venting can slow drying and may contribute to overheating.
Whirlpool recommends cleaning the home vent every one to two years, or when performance declines; the appropriate interval depends on the installation and use. Its support page also names a dryer vent testing kit, part W11224254. Check that the kit suits your vent configuration and follow the dryer’s maintenance instructions. Keep exhaust ducting configured as the manufacturer specifies.

If the dryer stops during a cycle
A dryer that shuts off and works again after cooling may be responding to overheating. A blocked vent or exterior damper can trap hot air and trigger a thermal overload shutdown, according to GE. Clear accessible lint and check the vent path using the owner’s manual. If shutdowns continue after the vent is clear, consult the manual or arrange service; a motor or other component fault may also be involved.
When to stop troubleshooting and call for service
Limit household troubleshooting to checks described in the owner’s manual. Stop and seek qualified help if there is a gas odor, damaged wiring, visible scorching, repeated breaker trips, or uncertainty about what you are inspecting. Do not bypass a thermal fuse or cutoff: if one has failed, the overheating cause—including restricted venting—needs to be addressed. Part location and circuit design vary by model.

Opening the appliance or testing internal electrical or gas components is an advanced repair task. If continuity testing is appropriate for your model, the dryer must be disconnected from power and the test must follow its service documentation. Otherwise, use the exact model’s service literature or a qualified appliance technician.
What dryer-problem figures can—and cannot—tell you
In a 2010 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission consumer opinion forum survey, approximately 30% of respondents reported an operating problem with their clothes dryers; 18% reported lack of or insufficient heat, and 17% reported lint accumulation. These are survey results from 2010, not current national estimates or a diagnosis of any individual dryer.
