Then check the property’s zoning, the municipality’s construction and road-closure notices, and—if transportation work is involved—the responsible transport agency’s project page. These sources answer different questions, so a map pin alone may not tell the whole story.
1. Find the official planning application record
Identify the city or county planning department responsible for the site. Search its development or application tracker using the street address, project name, parcel number, or file number. If your region has a planning portal, search there too: regional systems may track some applications while local councils maintain separate records for others.
For example, New South Wales’ Plans in NSW page links to application tracking, council trackers, zoning information, and planning proposals. The NSW Planning Portal Application Tracker lets users search and track development and state significant applications. These are examples of how official systems may be organized, not a universal directory.
Once you find a likely match, record its case or file number and check that the site address and project description correspond to the property you mean.

2. Check current zoning and proposed plan changes separately
A zoning or property map usually describes current planning controls; it may not show every change being considered. Look up the parcel in the official property or spatial viewer, then search the planning authority’s pages for proposed rezonings, planning proposals, local-plan amendments, or public exhibitions affecting the area.
In New South Wales, for instance, the Spatial Viewer and planning-proposal information are separate resources linked from Plans in NSW. Treat current zoning and a pending proposal as different facts: a proposed change is not necessarily an approved change.

3. Read the application record, not just the map
Open the application detail page and look for the material that explains what is actually proposed and where the process stands. Depending on the authority and application type, the record may include:
- Site plans, elevations, and other submitted drawings
- Planning, traffic, environmental, or other impact reports
- Application status, meeting information, and decision documents
- Public-comment instructions and the applicable deadline
- The project officer’s contact details or other ways to ask a question
Notice methods and deadlines vary by jurisdiction and application. Newcastle City Council’s planning applications guide, for example, describes application details, plans and reports, comment deadlines, site notices, and neighbour letters. Follow the instructions on the relevant official record rather than assuming another place’s process applies.

4. Find construction updates and road-closure information
Planning approval and construction logistics are often published in different places. Check the municipality’s construction-project map or infrastructure notices for local works, and its road-opening or closure information for access changes. For a major road, transit, or utility project, search the responsible agency’s project page as well; it may publish a schedule and traffic-impact notices that do not appear in a general development tracker.
Examples of these source types include the City of Toronto’s Current Construction Projects page, which covers planned and current work, notices, an interactive map, and road closures; and Liverpool City Council’s Public Exhibitions and Notices, which includes a road-opening and closure map that the council says is updated daily as applications are processed. A transport-agency project page, such as NCDOT’s HL-0033: Airport Blvd Extension – Morrisville, is another place to look for project schedule and traffic announcements.

After locating a project or searching the area, see whether the authority lets you save a search, subscribe to updates, or join a project mailing list. Options differ by place and may include email or text alerts, calendar subscriptions, or notifications on a project page.

These are examples, not features to expect on every portal. If no alert option is shown, note the official project page and check it again when you need an update.
6. Confirm the authority, status, and date
Before relying on a notice, check who is responsible for the record and when it was last updated. A development file, a municipal road notice, and a state or regional transport project may be managed by different organizations. Keep the file number, project contact, latest update date, and any stated schedule together so you can return to the right record.
Use the official record for status and decisions. Neighbourhood posts can help you discover a project, but they do not replace the planning or transport authority’s current information.
