Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteElectronic toll collection is usually more convenient when your tag or account is accepted, and it may cost less where the toll authority offers a tag discount. Cash can still work at toll points that accept it, but some roads have gone entirely electronic. Before you travel, check the road’s accepted payment methods, rates and fees, and whether your tag works there.
How electronic toll collection works
With an electronic toll collection (ETC) account, a small tag in or on the vehicle communicates with a roadside reader; the toll is then charged to the associated account. E-ZPass describes this tag-and-account arrangement in its program overview. Some roads also use plate-based video tolling, which identifies a vehicle and bills its owner without a tag. The exact billing route depends on the toll authority.
What changes when you pay cash
At a facility that accepts cash, drivers can pay at the toll point without setting up an ETC account. Cash lanes may require drivers to stop or slow down, while ETC can let vehicles pass a reader without stopping to hand over payment. The Federal Highway Administration describes ETC as improving traffic flow and collection efficiency compared with cash collection; Maryland also lists reduced idling and congestion as benefits of its all-electronic system. Those are agency-described system benefits, not a promise of a specific travel-time or fuel saving for an individual trip. FHWA’s interoperability report and Maryland’s DriveEzMD information explain these points.
Compare the actual cost on your route
There is no single national rule that makes ETC or cash cheaper. Some facilities offer tag discounts, while all-electronic roads may bill drivers without tags through plate-based billing or invoices, sometimes with different charges. E-ZPass New Jersey notes that discounts vary by facility; Massachusetts says its toll roads do not accept cash and provides Pay By Plate and invoice options. Check the toll authority’s current rate schedule and payment instructions rather than assuming a discount or fee applies everywhere. E-ZPass New Jersey discounts and Massachusetts E-ZDriveMA payment information are examples of state-specific policies.

Cash is not available on every road
Some toll facilities retain cash lanes; all-electronic facilities do not accept cash at the toll point. Where the authority provides it, a driver without a tag may instead be billed through a license-plate process or sent an invoice. For example, Massachusetts toll roads do not accept cash and offer Pay By Plate and invoice routes for drivers without a tag. Pennsylvania’s Turnpike also describes a cash-payment network where E-ZPass customers can add funds and Toll By Plate customers can pay invoices at participating retailers using a payment slip. That is an off-road payment option, not a cash lane at the plaza. Massachusetts payment options and Pennsylvania Turnpike cash-payment network describe these local arrangements.
Check tag compatibility before a trip
Interoperability lets one account and tag work across participating toll facilities, but a tag should not be assumed to work on every road. FHWA documents compatibility limits stemming from differences in technology and back-office systems. Check the toll agency’s coverage and account rules for every facility on your route, especially if traveling across state or agency boundaries. The E-ZPass Group overview explains the program, while the FHWA report discusses interoperability challenges.

Not for trailers or multi-axle vehicles.
- RENTAL CAR USE: A Uni toll pass can be used with rental cars of the same class — 2-axle vehicles. Make sure to add the rental vehicle's license plate to your E-PASS account. It may take up to 24 hours to link; during this time, tolls may be processed as an invoice. Make sure to remove the plate from your account after returning the vehicle to avoid charges from subsequent renters.
Consider account management and privacy
ETC links toll transactions and payment activity to an account or vehicle. Providers’ policies are not identical: New Jersey’s app privacy policy, for example, describes how information is handled and circumstances involving legally required disclosures. Review the policy for the agency or app you use if data handling matters to you; one provider’s policy does not establish how every toll agency handles information. New Jersey’s app privacy policy.

Choose based on how and where you drive
- Frequent trips on compatible roads: A tag may be convenient, and it may reduce toll costs where the authority offers a tag discount. Confirm current rates and accepted facilities before enrolling.
- Occasional trips: Cash may suit you where it is still accepted. On an all-electronic road, check whether plate billing or an invoice is available and what it costs.
- Multi-agency or interstate trips: Verify tag compatibility for each road and the rules attached to your account; interoperability is not universal.
