Search its map or notices for construction, closures, incidents, and detours; then confirm major disruptions with the agency responsible for the road or project. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) directory is a starting point for finding those jurisdiction-specific services—not one nationwide live traffic map.
Find the right road authorities for your route
Start with the FHWA traffic and road-closure information directory, which links to state and territorial sources. For a trip that crosses state lines, check each state or region you will travel through. A service may cover its own jurisdiction without showing every local street or road beyond it.
If you are traveling outside the United States, use the equivalent national, regional, or local transport authority for your route.
Open the official 511 or DOT service
Use the relevant DOT’s travel-information page or its 511 service. Many jurisdictions offer a website or map, mobile access, and a phone channel, but features and coverage vary. California’s Caltrans travel information page points travelers to regional services; in California, calling 511 routes callers to region-specific information. Check the service for your route rather than assuming that one number or map covers every road you plan to use.

Search the route and inspect relevant notices
Enter your route or inspect the map, then look for layers or notices labeled roadwork, construction, closures, detours, incidents, or alerts. Open individual items where possible: a map symbol alone may not tell you which lanes are affected, when work is scheduled, or whether a detour is suggested.
Coverage differs by service and source. Indiana’s INDOT TrafficWise map notes that detours are shown “if available,” so do not assume every closure listing will include a detour route. A regional map can also combine information from multiple sources; when a disruption matters to your trip, consult the responsible DOT or project notice as well.

Check again near departure—and use updates safely
Roadwork schedules and traffic conditions can change. Check the route before leaving, and revisit official notices close to departure if a closure or detour could materially affect your plans. The Bay Area 511 FAQ advises checking before setting off; if you need information while traveling, use a phone service or voice access where available, or pull over before looking at a screen.

Federal rules set program-design benchmarks for state real-time information programs. Under the 2024 edition of 23 CFR § 511.311, the specified minimum designed accuracy is 85 percent and minimum designed availability is 90 percent, alongside timeliness criteria for certain incident and weather information. These are program-level design requirements, not a guarantee that a particular roadwork record or detour on a map is correct at the moment you view it.
