Inspect the room before unpacking. Keep your suitcase closed and away from the bed, examine the mattress seams, frame, headboard, luggage rack, and nearby furniture, and look for physical signs—not just bites.

If you want to check a hotel room for bed bugs, inspect it before unpacking. Keep your suitcase closed and away from the bed, examine the mattress seams, bed frame, headboard, luggage rack, and nearby furniture, and look for physical evidence such as live bugs, shed skins, eggs, dark spots, or blood-colored stains. Do not rely on bites alone: bites can look like other insect bites, may take days to appear, and some people do not react at all.

Before you unpack

  1. Leave your suitcase closed.
  2. Keep it off the bed and, during the initial check, off the carpeted floor. Place it on an inspected luggage rack or in a bathroom or other hard, separated area.
  3. Do not spread clothing into drawers or the closet yet.
  4. Inspect the sleeping area and furniture closest to it before settling into the room.

A hotel does not need to be dirty or inexpensive to have bed bugs. They can occur in any type of lodging, including high-end hotels. Cleanliness is not a reliable way to rule them out.

Hotel-room bed-bug inspection checklist

You do not need specialized equipment for a useful inspection. A small flashlight for hotel-room inspection can make seams, folds, screw holes, and dark gaps easier to see, but it is only an illumination tool—not a bed-bug detector. Inspect methodically rather than turning the room upside down.

1. Mattress edges and seams

Pull back the sheet and inspect the mattress piping, seams, corners, folds, and the area around the mattress handles. Look particularly closely along the edges rather than only at the broad, exposed surface.

2. Box spring and bed frame

Check the underside and edges of the box spring where accessible, then examine the bed frame. Pay attention to joints, screw holes, cracks, and other crevices where insects can hide.

3. Headboard and wall gap

Inspect the front, sides, lower edge, mounting points, and crevices of the headboard. If it can be checked safely without damaging the room, examine the gap between the headboard and wall. Do not force a fixed or heavy headboard away from the wall.

4. Luggage rack

Examine the rack before placing your suitcase on it. Check its straps, joints, underside, folds, and screw holes. A rack is useful because it separates luggage from the bed, but it is not automatically free of pests.

5. Nearby furniture

Inspect the nightstand, drawer joints and undersides, upholstered chairs, desk, sofa, and other furniture close to the bed. Concentrate on seams, folds, cracks, corners, and dark gaps rather than casually scanning the room.

What bed-bug evidence looks like

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown, wingless insects. Adults and younger nymphs can be roughly 1 to 7 millimeters long, so some may be difficult to see without good lighting. During the day they commonly hide near sleeping areas in seams, folds, cracks, and crevices.

Look for several kinds of physical evidence:

  • Live bugs: flat, reddish-brown insects or much smaller, paler young bugs.
  • Eggs or egg casings: tiny pale eggs or whitish, attached remnants in protected spaces.
  • Shed skins: translucent, pale cast skins left as bed bugs grow.
  • Dark fecal spots: small dark marks on mattress seams, sheets, bed frames, or nearby furniture.
  • Rusty or blood-colored stains: marks on sheets, mattresses, or upholstery.

A sweet or musty odor can occur with heavier infestations, but smell alone does not confirm bed bugs. Likewise, a quick visual inspection cannot guarantee that a room is pest-free; it reduces risk and may reveal evidence, but hidden insects can be missed.

Are itchy bites proof of bed bugs?

No. Do not diagnose a hotel room from bites alone. Bed-bug bite reactions can resemble other insect bites or skin conditions. Marks may appear as long as 14 days after exposure, and some people have no visible reaction.

A suspected insect or characteristic physical sign is more useful than a skin reaction. If you find an insect, avoid crushing it or carrying it through the room. If possible, preserve it in a sealed container or bag for identification, and photograph the location and surrounding evidence. Identification by a qualified professional is preferable when the situation is uncertain.

What to do if you find a bed bug or convincing signs

  1. Stop unpacking. Keep clothing, toiletries, and bags closed or contained.
  2. Document the evidence. Take clear photographs and, if safe, preserve a specimen without spreading it.
  3. Contact the front desk immediately. Explain exactly what you found and where you found it.
  4. Request alternative lodging. Ask for a different room that is not next to, directly above, or directly below the suspected room when the hotel can accommodate that request. If the evidence is convincing or the response is inadequate, seek alternative lodging.
  5. Keep belongings contained. Do not move loose clothing, bags, or personal items around the room while waiting for instructions.

Do not simply move to the room next door. Adjacent rooms can be connected to the affected space, so a room farther away—or different lodging—is the more cautious choice. Hotel compensation, refunds, and reporting procedures vary by property and location; ask the hotel what it will document and provide, but do not assume a particular policy or legal remedy.

Avoid spraying an unverified pesticide on your luggage, clothing, or hotel furniture. Pesticides must be approved for the intended use and applied according to the product label; improvised treatment can damage belongings, expose people, and spread the problem without solving it.

How to reduce the chance of bringing bed bugs home

If you stayed in a room where bed bugs were found—or you are not sure whether your belongings were exposed—treat your luggage and clothing as potentially contaminated until you can inspect or treat them. Containment is preferable to automatically throwing away suitcases or clothes.

  • Unpack in a controlled area. Use a laundry room, garage, entryway, or another hard-floor area away from bedrooms when practical.
  • Transfer washable clothing directly. Put clothes into the washer or dryer without leaving piles on the floor. Washing alone generally does not reliably kill bed bugs; a dryer cycle using the hottest setting the fabric can safely tolerate is important.
  • Inspect the suitcase. Check seams, pockets, folds, handles, wheels, zippers, and internal compartments.
  • Seal questionable items. Place suspect clothing and other belongings in sealed plastic bags until they can be appropriately washed, dried, or otherwise treated.
  • Vacuum the suitcase. Vacuum the inside and outside carefully where appropriate, then dispose of the vacuum contents in a sealed bag according to local waste guidance.
  • Store luggage away from sleeping areas. Keep it off beds and out of bedrooms until it has been inspected and treated as needed.

Follow fabric-care instructions and do not use heat that could damage an item. If a suitcase or possession cannot be safely treated at home, ask a pest-management professional for an appropriate method.

When to call a professional

Arrange identification and treatment advice from an experienced or licensed pest-management professional if you find a live bug, see multiple characteristic signs, continue finding evidence after returning home, or cannot determine what the insect is. A professional can distinguish bed bugs from look-alike insects and recommend treatment for the items and rooms actually affected.

Do not assume that a household spray, fogger, app, magnifying glass, or flashlight can rule out an infestation. The flashlight helps you see; it does not identify or eliminate bed bugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a clean or expensive hotel still have bed bugs?

No. Bed bugs can occur in expensive and clean hotels as well as budget lodging. Cleanliness and room price do not prove that a room is free of bed bugs.

Can you identify bed bugs from bites alone?

No. Bites can resemble other insect bites or skin conditions, may take up to 14 days to appear, and some people do not react. Look for a live insect or physical evidence such as dark spots, shed skins, eggs, or blood-colored stains.

Keep the suitcase closed and away from the bed, ideally on an inspected luggage rack or in a bathroom during the initial inspection. Do not place it on the bed.

What should I do if I find a bed bug in my hotel room?

Stop unpacking, photograph and preserve the evidence if possible, notify the front desk, and request alternative lodging or a room that is not adjacent to the suspected room. Keep belongings closed or contained.

How should I handle luggage after possible bed-bug exposure?

Put washable clothing directly into a washer or dryer, using the hottest dryer setting the fabric can safely tolerate. Inspect and vacuum the suitcase, seal questionable items, and store luggage away from bedrooms. Washing alone generally will not kill all bed bugs.

The Bottom Line

Inspect before unpacking, keep luggage separated from the bed, and look for physical evidence rather than relying on bites. If you find a live bug or convincing signs, contain your belongings, document the evidence, notify the hotel, and move to a room away from the suspected area—or seek different lodging.
