Start with the official 511 service for your state or region, then check the road-owning agency’s project information—especially for planned work or city and county streets. On the traffic map, enable construction and closure layers, open alerts along your route, and check the affected segment, dates, times, and detour. Confirm conditions again shortly before you leave.
Start with the agency responsible for the road
The right place to look depends on who maintains the road and where you are traveling. For an interstate or state route, begin with the state department of transportation (DOT). For travel across a wider area, use the regional or state 511 website or app. For a city street or county road, check the city or county transportation or public works agency as well; local streets and utility work may not appear in a state or regional feed.

If you are unsure which agency owns the road, search for the road name together with its city or county and a phrase such as “road closure,” “construction,” or “public works.” For example, search for the street name, the town, and “road closure.” Prefer official agency pages and feeds over search snippets, which may not show whether an alert is current.

There is no single directory established here that covers every local street nationwide. The agencies and tools available depend on your location, so a regional 511 service is a starting point—not a guarantee that every road or project is included.

Use the traffic map and alert details together
On the relevant 511 map, turn on the construction and road-closure layers. Depending on the provider, incident and event layers may be separate. Bay Area 511, for example, lists construction, closure, incident, and event layers and lets users open a map item for details. Layer names and map features differ by service.
- Find your route. Zoom in on the road you plan to take, including the approach to your destination and any likely alternate roads.
- Enable relevant layers. Turn on construction and closure information. If incidents are shown separately, enable that layer too.
- Open each alert that could affect the trip. A map marker alone may not show the full location or timing. Read the alert rather than assuming it applies to the whole road.
- Check the operational details. Look for the affected segment, lanes, dates, start and end times, and any posted detour or alternate route.
- Compare the alert with your planned route. A closure on a nearby road may not affect your journey, while a restriction on one direction or a short segment may require a change.
Map layers and alert lists are complementary: the map helps you see where a notice sits relative to your route, while the alert provides the specific segment and schedule. Do not treat a project marker or a broad construction notice as proof that the entire road is closed.

Check planned projects separately
A live traffic map is useful for current conditions, but longer-term work may be explained on a separate DOT project page or construction map. That page can describe the project’s scope and anticipated completion, and may list a target completion date. Treat a target date as a project estimate, not confirmation that a particular lane or detour will be in place at the time you travel.

Set alerts if the agency offers them
Some agencies let you subscribe to updates by project, topic, or area. INDOT describes email and text notifications with those kinds of selection options. If a project page or 511 service offers subscriptions, choose the route or project that matters to you and use the notifications as an additional signal—not as a substitute for checking conditions before departure.
Subscriptions are most useful when you need to follow work over several days or weeks. They may not answer whether a particular closure is active at the exact time you travel, so open the latest official alert and verify its dates and affected segment.

Verify local streets with local agencies
State and regional 511 coverage varies. If your trip includes a city street, county road, neighborhood access road, or work zone tied to local utility work, look for notices from the agency responsible for that road. Search the road name and municipality with “construction,” “detour,” or “road closure,” then check the official transportation or public works page.
Use the local notice for the local segment and the 511 service for state or regional connections. A state feed may be useful for the larger journey without being a complete record of street-level work in every town.

Recheck shortly before you travel
Work schedules and active closures can change. Bay Area 511 says its map refreshes traffic information automatically, but update timing is not established uniformly across 511 providers or project pages. Do not assume that another service refreshes at the same rate or that a saved alert reflects the latest conditions.
- Open the official traffic map again close to departure.
- Check whether the alert is current and whether its dates and times cover your trip.
- Read the affected segment and direction, not just the project name.
- Look for a posted detour and any newer notice from the responsible agency.
When notices disagree or the road looks different
There is no universal conflict-resolution rule that applies to every jurisdiction or emergency. If an online notice conflicts with signs or instructions on the road, obey posted road-control signs and follow the responsible agency’s current directions. Before committing to a route, check for a newer official alert and confirm the closure on the road when it is safe to do so. A third-party navigation app may help you plan, but it should not be treated as the authority on whether a road is legally open.
Quick search phrases
When you do not know where an agency posts its notices, try a search that combines the location with the issue: “Where can I find more information on current traffic incidents, road construction and events?” is the question Bay Area 511 addresses in its FAQ. For planned work, INDOT’s FAQ asks, “Where can I find the latest information about construction projects?” You can also search the road, city, or county name with “road closure,” “construction,” or “detour.”
