Start with the official 511 service for the state or region where you’re traveling, then check the road-owning city or county for local streets. Use a live traffic map for current closures and incidents; for construction planned days or weeks ahead, look for the transportation agency’s project or construction page. Because 511 coverage varies, check the responsible agency’s notice for closure limits, dates and detours before you rely on a map.
Start with the 511 service for your area
For many trips in the United States, a state or regional 511 website or app is the quickest place to look for live traffic events, construction, road closures and work zones. To find the right service, search for “511” together with the state or region you need, then make sure you have opened an official transportation service rather than a third-party map or an unrelated result.

On the map, turn on the layers or filters labeled with terms such as roadwork, construction, closures, incidents or work zones. Labels and available layers differ by provider. On 511.org, for example, Construction Alert and Road Closure are separate map filters. Its FAQ says map symbols open details and that traffic alerts can also be viewed as a list.

Use the map to get oriented, but don’t assume that seeing no closure marker settles the question. A 511 service may not cover every road, and a map symbol may not provide all the detail you need to choose a route. Open the alert or project notice for the specific road and check the information there.

Search the exact road, route or neighborhood
Once you have the right service open, search for the route number or road name rather than relying only on a broad map view. If the site offers an alert list, use it alongside the map: lists can be easier to scan for a particular roadway, county, direction or location, while the map helps show where an alert sits in relation to nearby intersections and alternate routes.
Filtering options vary. SoCal 511 describes a traffic list with filters that include roadway, county and location, among other options. Other services may offer different filters or none. If a name search returns no result, try a route number, a nearby cross street, or the county or city where the road is located.
For a neighborhood trip, check the street name and the affected limits, not just the nearest major route. A closure on one block or at one intersection may not mean the entire street is closed. Conversely, a map marker near your destination does not by itself establish which approach is open. Use the notice’s location details to determine whether the work affects your origin, destination or intended turn.

A live traffic map is designed to show current conditions and events; it may not be the best place to find a construction schedule for a trip several days away. For planned work, look for the state department of transportation’s construction map, project page or project announcement. These sources may describe future work in more detail than a live incident marker.
INDOT directs readers to its roads and construction maps for current and future projects. It also offers project-specific email or SMS notifications. Arizona 511 offers route notifications, with settings that may include weekdays and daytime SMS delivery. The available choices and scheduling controls are service-specific, so check the selected provider’s instructions rather than assuming every service supports the same alert types or delivery times.
When you need to know which block or intersection will be closed
If your question is whether a particular section of street or an intersection will be closed a few days ahead, look for a project notice that names the work limits, dates and detour. A statewide map may identify a construction area without spelling out every affected block or turn. The project page or an announcement from the responsible city, county or transportation agency is the better place to verify those details when available.
If the notice does not make the limits clear, do not infer them from the marker alone. Check for a more detailed project update from the agency responsible for the road. Planned schedules can change, so a notice found several days earlier should be checked again near departure.
Check the agency that owns the road
State 511 services do not necessarily include city streets and county roads. If the closure is on a local street, look for the city’s or county’s public works, transportation, engineering or road-closure page. Search the local government’s official site for the street name or project, and check the relevant agency’s announcement if one is available.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The difference is important: a road can be absent from a state 511 map because the service excludes that category of road, not because the road is open. Iowa DOT says its 511 service does not include county roads or city streets. INDOT also notes that work near a state project may belong to a city, county or local business rather than the state project itself. In those situations, the local road owner or project organizer is the appropriate source for the closure’s details.
When you are unsure who maintains a road, check the city or county transportation or public works information, then follow any project notice to the agency named as responsible. A nearby state project does not prove that the state owns or controls every adjacent street.
Choose alerts that match your trip
After you find the relevant route or project, consider setting an alert if you need updates over time. Depending on the provider, information may be available through a website, app, text message, email or phone service. Some notifications follow a route or county; others are tied to a specific project. Choose the smallest area that still covers the roads you use so that the information remains relevant.

SoCal 511 offers personalized text or email alerts. INDOT offers project-specific email or SMS notifications, while Arizona 511 route alerts may be configured with weekday and daytime SMS choices. These examples are not a universal feature list; check the service you use for its actual setup options.
Alerts are useful for changes, but they do not replace checking the notice itself when you need precise closure limits or a detour. Read the alert’s details and look for a date or last-updated time before deciding how to travel.
Compare sources by what they cover
If more than one official source is available, choose based first on who owns the road and which area the service covers. Then check whether it reports live closures, planned construction or both, and whether it provides the details you need.
| Source | Best use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| State or regional 511 website or app | Live traffic events, closures, roadwork and route alerts within that service’s coverage | Whether the road is included; available map layers, list filters and alert options |
| State DOT construction map or project page | Current and future state-road projects and longer-term schedules | Project limits, dates, detours and whether project-specific notifications are offered |
| City or county public works, transportation, engineering or road-closure page | Closures on local streets and county roads | Which local agency is responsible and whether its notice names affected blocks or intersections |
| Official project announcement | Details about a particular construction project, including work limits or detours when stated | Who issued it, which road it covers, the applicable dates and when it was last updated |
There is no single source that can be assumed to cover every road or provide every detail. A regional service may be easiest for scanning current conditions, while an agency project page or local closure notice may be more useful for planning around future work. Treat the road owner and geographic coverage as the first filters, not as fine print.
Use a repeatable search for an upcoming trip
When a trip matters, use the same sequence each time instead of stopping at the first search result. First identify the state, region, city or county in which the affected road sits. Next open the official 511 map and search the route or street. Turn on every relevant layer, then open each symbol that overlaps your route. Record the stated location, direction, dates and detour rather than relying on the icon’s position.

Then move to the construction or project page. Search the project name, road name and nearby cross streets on the transportation agency’s official site. If the work is in a municipality, repeat the search on the city or county site. A project can appear on a state map while the detailed lane or intersection notice is published by a local agency, so checking both levels is worthwhile.
Finally, compare the information with your actual trip. A project several miles away may not affect your approach, while a short closure at the one intersection where you must turn can make the trip impractical. Note whether the notice describes a full closure, alternating traffic, a ramp restriction, a lane reduction or work only during specified hours. Do not treat all “construction” labels as equivalent.
Understand what a map can and cannot tell you
A map is excellent for finding the general location of an event and seeing nearby routes, but the graphic symbol is not the closure order itself. Open the symbol to find the text attached to it. Details may identify a direction, a county, a project or a time window that is not visible at the map level. If the service provides a list view, scan that list for duplicate entries or separate alerts affecting different directions.

An incident may be active now and have no scheduled end time. Planned work may have a start date in the future and may be removed, postponed or changed. A closure filter can also be separate from a construction filter, as on 511.org, so enable both when you need a complete picture.
Do not assume that a route highlighted in a traffic view is closed end to end. Read the stated limits and look for terms such as “between,” “at,” “from,” “to,” “eastbound,” “westbound,” “northbound” or “southbound.” Those words determine whether the restriction affects your lane or direction.
What to do when the road does not appear
A blank search result has several possible explanations. The provider may not cover that road class, the alert may be listed under a route number instead of a local name, or the project may be posted only on a city, county or agency page. Try the route number, alternate spelling, nearby cross street, county and municipality. Search the official site for “road closure,” “construction,” “transportation,” “public works” or “project updates” plus the street name.
If a local street is missing from a state map, go directly to the local road owner. Iowa DOT’s 511 guidance explicitly excludes county roads and city streets, illustrating why absence from a state service cannot confirm that a street is open. If the notice identifies a business, developer or other project organizer, check that organizer’s official announcement as well as the government page.
When the ownership remains unclear, use the city or county transportation or public works office as the next contact point. Ask which agency maintains the road and where current closure notices are posted. For a consequential trip, do not substitute an unverified third-party post for an official update.

Verify the closure before changing your plans
Before relying on an update, check the closure limits, dates, detour and the notice’s last-updated time. For a trip that would be significantly disrupted by a closure, compare the map with the responsible agency’s project or alert notice. If the information conflicts or leaves an important detail unclear, use the road-owning agency’s current notice rather than guessing from a map marker.
- Confirm the location: Match the road name, route, direction, nearby cross streets or stated project limits to your trip.
- Confirm the timing: Read the notice’s dates and hours, if provided, and distinguish future planned work from a closure that is active now.
- Read the detour: Check whether the route affects your approach, destination or a turn you need to make.
- Check recency: Look for a last-updated time or a newer notice, especially when you checked several days before traveling.
- Resolve missing local information: If a local road is not listed, check the city or county source or contact the road-owning agency. Absence from one 511 map does not establish that the road is open.
Check again just before departure
Road conditions and construction status can change after you first check. Revisit the relevant 511 service and project or local agency notice near departure, particularly if your route depends on a road that was scheduled for work. 511.org recommends checking traffic before leaving; it also advises calling 511 for voice information or pulling over before checking a smartphone. Do not try to read or operate a phone while driving.
If the route is consequential, keep the road owner’s notice available as well as the live traffic view. The map can help you see current events, while the notice can establish the stated work limits and schedule. If either source is unclear, verify with the responsible agency instead of treating an unmarked road as confirmed open.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA quick checklist for recurring commutes
For a commute, school run or delivery route that you use repeatedly, save the official 511 website or app and the relevant city or county road-closure page. Set a route, county or project alert if the provider offers one, but keep the alert area narrow enough to avoid irrelevant messages. At the start of each workday, scan the live map and alert list. Before a major event or appointment, open the project notice itself and check whether the schedule or detour has changed.
Keep a short list of alternate roads, but verify those roads too. A detour may send traffic onto a city street that is not represented on the state 511 map. If the project notice gives an official detour, compare it with your vehicle’s destination and any restrictions shown in the local notice. The safest choice is the route supported by current information from the agencies responsible for each road.
Stay safe while checking updates
Traffic information is useful only if you check it safely. Review maps and notices before leaving. If you need an update while traveling, call the 511 phone service where available or pull over before using a smartphone, as 511.org advises. Never handle a phone to read a closure notice while driving. A passenger can check the information, or you can stop in a legal, safe location.

How can I find out which block or intersection will be closed later this week?
Look for the responsible agency’s construction project page or official announcement. These notices are more likely than a live map marker to state work limits, affected intersections, dates, hours and detours. Recheck the notice near departure because schedules can change.
Should I use a live traffic map or a construction map?
Use the live 511 map for current incidents, closures and traffic conditions. Use a state DOT construction map, project page or local government notice for planned work and longer-term schedules. For an important trip, compare both.
What alerts can I receive?
Options depend on the provider. Examples include website and app updates, phone information, county or route notifications, project-specific email or SMS, and personalized text or email alerts. Arizona 511 may offer weekday and daytime SMS settings, while other services use different controls.
What should I do if two official pages disagree?
Check each page’s last-updated time and read the detailed project or closure notice. Confirm the road owner, direction, limits, dates and detour. If an important point remains unclear, contact or check the current notice from the agency responsible for that road.
Does an unmarked road mean it is open?
No. The road may be outside the 511 service’s coverage or the information may be published by a city, county or project organizer. Check the local road-owning agency before treating the absence of a marker as confirmation.
Can I check 511 while driving?
Do not operate a phone while driving. 511.org recommends checking before leaving, calling 511 for voice information, or pulling over before checking a smartphone.
The Bottom Line
Start with the official 511 service for live conditions, use a state DOT project page for planned work, and check the city or county when the road is local. Verify exact limits, dates, detours and update times with the responsible agency, then check again just before departure.
