How to Find Detours and Check Local Road-Closure Updates

Start with the official state department of transportation (DOT) website or the regional 511 traveler-information service that covers the road you will use. Select the service’s closure, construction, incident and detour layers, open the individual alert, and verify the roadway, direction, limits, timing and alternate route. Check again shortly before departure, confirm important information with the responsible local or state road agency, and never handle a phone while driving.

Use the agency responsible for the road

Road-closure information is organized by jurisdiction, not by one universal national feed. The correct starting point depends on the state, county, city, tribal area or toll-road authority that operates the route. Search for the state DOT or a regional/state 511 traveler-information service using the road name and locality. Official services are designed to publish agency traffic alerts, construction information and roadway conditions.

Examples of official regional services include Bay Area 511, SoCal 511, AZ511 and Florida 511. New England 511 serves a multi-state region. These examples illustrate the method; they do not mean that every location uses the same service or provides the same map layers.

  • Search for “[state] DOT road closures”, “[region] 511” or “[road name] closure [city or county]”.
  • Prefer a government DOT or transportation-agency domain over an unaffiliated repost.
  • Check whether the road is operated by a separate tollway, bridge, park, port or municipal authority; that agency may publish the controlling notice.
  • Save the official map or alert page once you identify it, because a generic web search may return old closure stories after conditions change.

No single service necessarily covers every local street. A state 511 map may show highways while a city public-works department handles neighborhood roads. When the route crosses jurisdictions, check each agency that controls a significant segment.

Find the closure and detour layers

Open the map legend, filters or alerts panel and turn on every layer relevant to the trip. Names vary, but look for:

  • Road Closure or Closures: a full or partial restriction reported by the service.
  • Construction: planned work, work zones and long-running restrictions.
  • Incidents: crashes, disabled vehicles, debris, flooding, fires and other temporary disruptions.
  • Detour Routes: an agency-designated alternate route, where the service offers one.
  • Events or Special Events: parades, races and festivals that can close roads without construction.

Map colors and icons are only a starting signal. Bay Area 511 explains that its map icons can be opened for incident and closure details, and Florida 511’s app fact sheet describes closure and detour map layers. Tap or click the marker, then read the full alert before deciding that a road is open or blocked.

Step-by-step: verify a closure before you leave

  1. Define the trip. Write down the road number or name, travel direction, nearest intersections, destination and approximate departure time. A long route may have several roads with similar names.
  2. Open the responsible DOT or 511 service. Use the official map, website or official app for the jurisdiction. If the route crosses a state line, open the service for each state or region.
  3. Search or zoom to the corridor. Enter the road, destination or route number if the service supports search. Zoom far enough to distinguish the exact segment, interchange or bridge.
  4. Enable closure, construction, incident and detour layers. Also enable events if the trip is during a festival, race, parade or other scheduled activity.
  5. Open every relevant alert. Do not rely on a red line, barricade icon or shaded segment alone. Read the text attached to the alert.
  6. Match the alert to your trip. Confirm the named roadway, travel direction, city or county, nearest cross streets, mileposts or interchange numbers and whether the restriction affects all lanes, one lane, a shoulder or a ramp.
  7. Check timing. Record the start date and time, expected end or reopening estimate, and whether the notice says “until further notice.” An expected end is not a guarantee that the road will reopen then.
  8. Read the alternate-route instruction. Follow an agency-designated detour when one is listed. Note turns, restricted vehicle types, low clearances, weight limits, one-way sections and any temporary traffic control.
  9. Compare the detour with your vehicle and purpose. A route suitable for a passenger car may not suit a trailer, delivery truck, oversized load, emergency vehicle or construction equipment. Check clearance, weight, height and access restrictions with the responsible agency when relevant.
  10. Save or print the essential details. Keep the alert name, agency, update time and detour instructions available offline in case reception fails.
  11. Check again just before departure. Closure status, lane availability and reopening estimates can change after your first search.

What to verify inside an alert

A useful alert answers more than “closed” or “open.” Use this checklist when reading the notice:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Detail What to confirm Why it matters
Road identity Official road name, route number and direction Prevents confusing parallel roads or a closure in the opposite direction with your route.
Location limits Cross streets, exits, mileposts, bridge name, city or county Shows whether the restriction reaches your entry point or destination.
Extent of restriction Full closure, lane closure, shoulder closure, ramp closure or alternating traffic A “closure” may affect only a ramp or one lane, while a full closure requires a different plan.
Cause Crash, construction, weather, flooding, fire, event or emergency work The cause helps indicate whether conditions may expand or persist.
Start and update time When the restriction began and when the agency last updated it An old marker may not reflect the current situation.
Expected duration Scheduled end, reopening estimate or “until further notice” Lets you decide whether to wait, reroute or postpone.
Detour Official alternate roads, turns and restrictions Agency detours account for traffic control and access conditions better than an improvised shortcut.
Vehicle limits Weight, height, width, hazardous-material or truck restrictions Protects vehicles that cannot legally or physically use a suggested alternate.

If any of these details are missing, treat the notice as incomplete rather than filling in the gaps yourself. Use the agency’s contact, phone or public-information channel to clarify a critical route.

Set route alerts when the service supports them

Some systems let you save a frequently used route and receive notices along it. AZ511, for example, says users can save regularly used routes and receive alerts. Create a saved route for the exact corridor rather than for a broad region, and include the direction if the service allows it.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Build a useful saved route

  1. Name the route with the origin, destination and direction, such as “Northbound commute: town to industrial park.”
  2. Include the roads that matter before and after the main highway; a closure on an approach road can make the highway alert misleading.
  3. Choose the alert types you need, including closures, construction and incidents.
  4. Review notification settings so an alert is visible before travel rather than only after you are already on the road.
  5. Open the alert itself when notified. A push notification may omit the limits, timing or detour text.

Route alerts supplement, rather than replace, a final map check. A saved route can be accurate while a new closure appears on a connecting local street that was not included.

Cross-check important information with the road agency

For a critical trip, compare the 511 alert with the notice from the agency that owns or maintains the road. Look for a state DOT release, county or city transportation bulletin, bridge or toll authority notice, emergency-management update or police advisory, depending on the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data sources differ between services. New England 511 says Waze reports appear in addition to information from MaineDOT, NHDOT and VTrans. That means a regional map may combine official agency notices with other reporting. A crowdsourced report can be an early warning, but it is a prompt to confirm the roadway, direction and timing—not proof that every service has identical information.

When two sources disagree

  • Prefer the current notice from the agency responsible for the road, especially for legal closures, emergency restrictions and detour instructions.
  • Compare the timestamp and location limits; two alerts may describe different segments or different directions.
  • Call the agency or 511 voice service if the discrepancy affects safety, access to a worksite or a time-sensitive delivery.
  • Choose the conservative option when the road status cannot be confirmed: delay the trip or use a clearly open alternate corridor.

How official maps, 511 services and navigation apps differ

You may have a DOT page, a 511 service and a navigation app available at the same time. Evaluate each one against the information you actually need.

Question Official DOT notice Regional or state 511 Navigation app
Does it cover the exact road and locality? Usually strongest for roads controlled by that agency; local coverage varies. Depends on the service’s geographic scope and participating agencies. Coverage and map updates vary by provider and road class.
Does it show limits and timing? Often provides the agency’s formal wording and restrictions. May present an alert with location, timing and detour fields. May show a blockage or delay without the full legal or operational detail.
Can you distinguish official from crowdsourced reports? Generally an agency-originated notice. Check the source label; some services combine agency and other reports. Look for the report source and timestamp, if displayed.
Can you save routes and receive alerts? Feature depends on the agency site. Some services, including AZ511, support saved routes and alerts. Common, but alert types and coverage differ.
Can you check safely while traveling? Use a voice or roadside channel where offered. Some 511 systems provide telephone information; otherwise pull over. Use hands-free voice functions and do not read or type while moving.

This is a decision framework, not a claim that one tool is universally best. The responsible agency remains the authority for a closure on its road, while a 511 map can make corridor-wide conditions easier to see.

Check at the right times

The day before

For planned construction, events or weather-sensitive travel, read the agency notice and identify at least one alternate corridor. Note any scheduled overnight or weekend work and whether the restriction is expected to move between phases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before departure

Refresh the official map, reopen the alert and compare its update time with your departure. Recheck the first local road, the main corridor, bridges and the final approach to the destination. SoCal 511’s FAQ states that its traffic information is updated every minute; that is a service-specific statement and should not be applied to every 511 system.

During a long trip

Conditions can change after the initial check. Plan a safe stopping location before entering a congested or remote section, then pull over to refresh the agency map if the trip lasts several hours or weather is changing. Do not assume that a route was clear merely because it was clear at departure.

Stay safe while checking updates on the road

Bay Area 511 advises checking before leaving, calling 511 for voice-responsive travel information, or pulling over before checking a smartphone. Follow the same principle wherever you travel:

  • Set navigation and review alerts while parked.
  • Use a hands-free voice service only where it is supported and legal.
  • Never type, scroll through a map or photograph a closure notice while driving.
  • If an alert appears, continue to a safe stopping place instead of making a sudden turn or stopping in a live lane.
  • Obey barricades, police directions and variable-message signs even if an app suggests another route.
  • For commercial, oversized or hazardous loads, stop and verify the detour’s restrictions before proceeding.

Troubleshoot common closure-checking problems

The map shows no closure, but the road is blocked

Check that the correct jurisdiction and road segment are selected, then enable incidents, construction and events in addition to closures. Open the responsible local agency’s notice and look at the timestamp. A brand-new emergency may appear first through roadside signs or police direction.

The alert is for the wrong direction or a nearby road

Read the direction, mileposts and cross streets in the alert. Zoom in until the marker is on your travel lane or ramp. If the details do not match, do not reroute solely because the icon is nearby.

The detour sends you onto a restricted road

Check vehicle dimensions, weight, seasonal restrictions, bridge limits and access rules. Contact the road authority for a vehicle-specific alternative. A passenger-car detour is not automatically valid for a truck, trailer or equipment convoy.

The expected reopening time has passed

Refresh the alert and look for a new update rather than assuming the road reopened. “Expected” times can move because of weather, cleanup, inspections or additional damage. Treat “until further notice” as an open-ended restriction.

Different services show different statuses

Compare source labels, update times and exact limits. Give priority to the agency responsible for the road, and use the 511 or agency telephone channel when the difference affects safety or access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no signal or the website will not load

Save the key alert details before leaving, including the detour and agency phone number. Pull over in a legal, safe location before attempting another connection. Do not rely on a cached map as proof that a closure remains unchanged.

  • Search the exact route, direction and locality.
  • Enable closures, construction, incidents, detours and relevant events.
  • Open the alert and record location limits, lane impact, timing and source.
  • Confirm the alternate route fits your vehicle and destination access.
  • Cross-check a critical closure with the responsible road agency.
  • Refresh near departure and during long trips at safe stopping points.
  • Use voice information or pull over; never handle a phone in moving traffic.

What the official services can—and cannot—tell you

A DOT or 511 service can provide the most relevant published status for its coverage area, but features, data sources, update cadence and road coverage differ by jurisdiction. A map may not include every municipal street, private road, temporary police operation or newly developing hazard. A listed detour may also be designed for a particular vehicle class or phase of construction.

Use the alert as a current operating notice, not as a permanent guarantee. The combination of an official source, a detailed alert reading, an agency cross-check for important trips and a final safety check gives you a defensible route decision without treating any single map as infallible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one national website for every local road closure?

No. Closure coverage is organized by jurisdiction. Start with the state DOT, regional 511 service or local road agency responsible for the specific road, and check more than one agency when your route crosses boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should I open the map icon instead of trusting its color?

The icon or colored line may not show direction, exact limits, lane impact, timing or the approved detour. Opening the alert reveals the details needed to decide whether it affects your trip.

How often are 511 maps updated?

It varies by service. SoCal 511 states that its traffic information is updated every minute, but that figure is specific to SoCal 511 and is not a universal interval for all 511 systems.

Can I check a closure while driving?

Do not read or type on a phone in moving traffic. Set information before departure, use a supported hands-free voice service, or pull over safely before viewing the map.
