Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a trip affected by roadwork, check the relevant state Department of Transportation (DOT) or regional 511 service, inspect both the project notice and current closure alerts, then compare those details with a navigation app. Recheck shortly before leaving. Because 511 coverage and map features vary by region, use the service responsible for each part of your route—not just the first result you find.
Find the official traffic source for your route
Search for the state or regional “511 traffic” page or DOT road-conditions page for the roads you plan to use. On a trip crossing state lines or several road authorities, check each relevant service. Confirm that it covers the specific road: a state-highway map may not include every local street.

Official services can show different kinds of information. The Bay Area’s 511.org describes a real-time map with traffic speeds, incidents, construction, events, and closures; users can select map icons or open Alerts for more detail. Its FAQ also describes calling 511 for route driving times or traffic conditions. Elsewhere, INDOT directs travelers to separate resources for projects and current traffic, NJ 511 lets users customize map layers, and SoCal 511 provides directions and traffic information within its listed coverage. These are regional examples, not a guarantee that all 511 services offer the same features.
Check planned construction and current restrictions
A project page and a live traffic alert answer different questions. A project record may describe planned work and target dates; a live map or closure notice is more useful for what is restricted now. Check both when available. INDOT explicitly distinguishes its Roads Map for current and future projects from CARS information on speeds, accidents, closures, and detours when available. Its FAQ advises: “For current and future construction projects, refer to the INDOT Roads Map and select the project on the navigation menu to find the latest updates.”

Open the individual project or closure notice rather than relying on a colored line on the map. Look for the affected road segment, direction, dates and hours, closure status, and any stated alternate route. Check when the notice was issued or updated. A planned completion date is a target, not a promise that the road will be fully open then; the reviewed agency pages do not establish one update schedule or a standard set of details for every notice.
Compare the official notice with navigation apps
Use a navigation app to compare travel times and alternate routes, but treat its suggestion as another source—not the authority on whether a road is closed or a detour is suitable. The Washington State Department of Transportation’s traffic manual describes asking third-party vendors such as Google Maps and Waze to correct proposed detours that direct drivers to unsuitable alternatives, including gravel forest roads or narrow, curving highways. It also cautions that correction is not guaranteed and a vendor may continue to show incorrect detour information.

Data partnerships vary. 511NY describes Waze-reported information as additional to official NYSDOT information. That is a useful way to weigh crowd reports in New York, not a description of every state’s data feeds. When sources disagree, check the road authority’s current closure notice and the conditions on the road.

Make a quick route-check before departure
- Identify the jurisdictions. Note the states, regions, and road authorities along your route, including local roads near the start and destination.
- Open each official 511 or DOT map. Turn on available layers for construction, closures, detours, incidents, and traffic speeds. Open relevant alerts or map icons for details.
- Read the project and closure notices. Confirm the road segment, direction, timing, current restriction, and any published detour. Do not treat a future target date as confirmation of an opening.
- Compare with navigation. Review the suggested route and alternatives for conflicts with official closures or routes that appear unsuitable.
- Recheck close to departure. Construction schedules and traffic can change after you plan. If the route needs attention, review it while parked or use an available phone service before setting off.
Follow road controls and check safely
If a sign, flagger, or temporary traffic-control setup conflicts with a digital map, follow the directions posted on the road. Agency guidance shows that digital detour information can be wrong or remain uncorrected, so do not assume an app has priority over the current on-site instructions.

- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
Do not inspect a phone while driving. The Bay Area 511 FAQ says to call 511 or pull over to check traffic conditions. Make any route change from a safe stopping place; a phone mount does not make interacting with a phone while moving safe.
