Before a child uses it, confirm with the school and the road authority managing the work that the temporary pedestrian route and crossing are open. A vehicle detour is not automatically a safe walking route.

Start with the school’s established walking route
Ask the school for its current walking-route map and construction notices. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) school-route guidance describes a systematic plan developed with the school, law enforcement, and responsible traffic officials. Such a plan can map streets, traffic controls, established walking routes, and crossings. FHWA’s school-area guidance in the MUTCD is useful background for understanding that approach.

Confirm whether the usual crossing is still available and whether any crossing supervision is operating. A map or familiar route may no longer reflect a temporary closure or a moved crossing.

Compare the full walking routes, not just distance
Trace each option from the child’s starting point to the school entrance. Consider how the child reaches and leaves each crossing as well as what happens on the block beside the construction. A longer walk to an established crossing with traffic control may be preferable to a shorter, uncontrolled crossing; distance alone does not decide which route is suitable.
- Crossing control: Prefer an established crossing with a signal or other traffic control, or crossing supervision where available, over an uncontrolled shortcut. A painted marking alone does not establish that a crossing is controlled.
- Continuity: Check that sidewalks or other pedestrian paths connect the route all the way to school. Avoid options that end abruptly or require walking in a traffic lane or through a work area.
- Protection and accessibility: Check whether a temporary path is separated from construction hazards and usable for the child’s mobility needs. FHWA’s current MUTCD guidance treats pedestrian needs, including those of people with disabilities, as part of temporary traffic control planning and calls for continuity of accessible passage through or around work zones.
- Fit for the student: Weigh added distance, the child’s age and ability, and the approach to the crossing. The most direct route is not necessarily the most appropriate one.
- Conditions today: Check that posted signs and the school’s latest route information agree with what is open at the site.
Verify the temporary pedestrian route before using it
- Contact the school. Ask for the current walking-route map and construction notices. Confirm whether the established crossing and any crossing supervision remain in place.
- Walk or trace the complete route. Check that the pedestrian path connects to the crossing and continues to school, rather than checking only the construction frontage.
- Ask about closures and crossing changes. Contact the school and the road authority responsible for the project. Ask specifically where pedestrians are meant to walk and cross while work is underway.
- Resolve conflicts before sending a child. If signs conflict with route information, or there is no continuous usable path, get clarification and an alternative from the school or project authority. Do not improvise a route through the work area.
Temporary traffic-control planning is meant to account for pedestrians, but that does not certify that a particular route is currently open or suitable. Site-specific confirmation matters.

Follow posted work-zone directions; do not guess a speed limit
Work-zone speed limits are part of the traffic-control plan, and state and local agencies set the applicable limits. Follow current signs and local instructions; there is no single work-zone or school-zone speed limit that can be assumed for an unidentified street. FHWA explains this in its work-zone speed-management guidance.

Start with the school office or its transportation or safety contact. Ask it to connect you with the local road authority managing the construction if the temporary pedestrian route is unclear. School-route planning involves schools, law enforcement, and responsible traffic officials, but the relevant jurisdiction and project contact depend on the location.
