Before taking it, confirm that the detour is intended for your travel mode: a route for motor vehicles is not automatically suitable or permitted for walking or cycling. Without a location, no general guide can verify whether a particular road is closed or whether its detour is safe for you.
How do I get around a road closure?
Use the official notice and the signs at the closure together. A navigation app can help you orient yourself, but it does not establish that a road is currently open, that a suggested route is the official detour, or that the route suits your mode of travel. A temporary closure is specific to a place and time, so an old notice or an earlier trip cannot confirm what you will encounter now.

Start by identifying the authority responsible for the road. Depending on the road and location, this may be a state or local transportation agency, a county or city, or another road operator. Look for that authority’s current closure notice, work-zone update, or traffic advisory. Check that it applies to the road and the time you plan to travel. If the road crosses jurisdictional boundaries or the closure is managed by another operator, make sure you are checking information from the entity responsible for that section.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Read the posted signs before turning onto the detour. Note the temporary route and destination signs, and follow them through the closure area. The FHWA’s 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published in 2023, says in Section 6I.02: “Each detour shall be adequately marked with standard temporary route signs and destination signs.” That is why a single app suggestion or an isolated sign should not be treated as a substitute for following the marked route.
- Look for the route to continue at each junction. Do not assume that one detour sign identifies the whole route. Follow the temporary signs and check that they keep directing you around the closure. California’s 2026 MUTCD describes signs intended to let road users traverse the complete detour and return to the original roadway. If signs stop, conflict, or seem to lead toward a barricaded or unsafe section, do not enter the closed area; seek clarification from the responsible authority or an on-site official.
- Confirm the route is for your mode. Check the notice and signs for whether they apply to drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, or more than one group. If you cannot establish that a route is permitted and usable for your mode, do not assume a vehicle detour is suitable for walking or cycling. A detour may be signed for one set of road users while another mode needs different directions.
- Compare options using practical checks. If the authority identifies more than one possible route, check whether each is officially open, whether its signs continue around and beyond the closure, whether it suits your mode, and whether it is practical for your own constraints. Do not assume that the shortest-looking route is the best one or that an app’s alternate is approved for every traveler.
Detour signs and route conditions can change with the closure. Check the authority’s current information close to departure rather than relying on an old notice or a route remembered from an earlier trip. Match the notice’s dates or stated timing to your trip; if the notice does not make clear whether the closure is active when you expect to arrive, look for an update or ask the responsible authority to clarify.

At the site, follow the posted route rather than attempting to pass through barricades or a closed section. If information is unclear, stop short of the closure where it is safe to do so and ask an on-site official or contact the responsible road authority. This is a prudent response to conflicting or missing directions, not a universal substitute for location-specific instructions.
Where can I check if a road is closed?
Start with the road authority responsible for that specific road. Its notice is the place to look for the current status, affected area, timing, and any mode-specific instructions the authority has published. If you do not know which authority is responsible, use the road’s location and type to identify the relevant state or local transportation agency or road operator, then check its official traffic or work-zone information.
- Match the notice to your trip. Confirm that it names or covers the road and closure area you need, and that its timing covers when you expect to travel. A notice about a nearby road or a different segment may not answer whether your route is affected.
- Check for updates. Look for a newer notice or work-zone update before leaving. A general map result, an older advisory, or an app route is not a substitute for the authority’s current closure information.
- Read mode-specific instructions. Check whether the notice discusses motor vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, or only some of them. If you are walking or cycling, do not infer that a vehicle detour applies to you just because it is shown on a map.
- Use signs at the site as you approach. The on-road temporary route and destination signs guide you through the detour. If they appear inconsistent with an online notice, do not enter a barricaded closure; ask the responsible authority or an on-site official to clarify the route.
There is no location-independent source that can confirm whether an unspecified road is closed right now. The current answer depends on the road authority’s notice and the signs for that particular closure. If you are checking a closure for someone else, share the authority’s current notice rather than relying on a screenshot or a route description that may have become outdated.
Should I follow the detour signs or my navigation app?
Follow the marked temporary route through the closure, not an app’s unverified alternative. The FHWA MUTCD’s Section 6I.02 requirement is for detours to be marked with temporary route and destination signs. California’s 2026 MUTCD describes signing a detour so road users can traverse the complete route and return to the original roadway.
An app may suggest a different way around the closure, but that does not show that the alternative is officially open, marked continuously, or appropriate for your travel mode. Treat app guidance as supplementary orientation. It may help you understand where you are or see a broad route, but the map display alone cannot confirm current closure status, official detour directions, or whether the route is intended for walkers or cyclists.
If an app and the posted signs differ, do not use the app’s alternative to bypass the closure unless the responsible authority has confirmed that route. If it conflicts with posted detour signs or directs you toward a barricade, do not follow it into the closed area. If the official signs themselves are missing or contradictory, stop short of the closure where it is safe to do so and seek clarification from the responsible authority or an on-site official.
Likewise, do not assume that a sign encountered on one portion of the route is enough to navigate the rest. The intended path should remain identifiable as you reach junctions and move around the closure. If the route becomes unclear, asking for clarification is preferable to guessing which turn the detour intended.

Is a vehicle detour safe for walking or cycling?
Not necessarily. A route intended for motor vehicles may have conditions that do not work for a person walking or cycling, and a sign for vehicle traffic does not by itself establish that other modes are permitted. Check the official closure notice and the signs for instructions that specifically apply to your mode. Do not take a motor-vehicle detour on foot or by bicycle simply because it connects the same places on a map.
If you are cycling
Look for bicycle-specific detour information, especially if the closed road is a designated bicycle route. California’s 2026 MUTCD includes separate guidance for bicycle movements and calls for a signed alternate when a designated bicycle route is closed. It also says bicyclists should not be directed onto a pedestrian path. These are California manual provisions, not a guarantee that every jurisdiction uses identical requirements.
Check whether the closure notice identifies a bicycle alternate and whether signs make its continuation clear. Do not assume that a route intended for walking is an acceptable substitute for a bicycle route, or that the motor-vehicle detour is appropriate for cycling. If the signs do not identify a route for bicycles, contact the responsible authority or ask an on-site official whether a bicycle-appropriate alternate is available and currently open.
If you are walking
Check for pedestrian-specific directions rather than assuming that a roadway detour provides a usable walking route. California’s 2026 MUTCD addresses pedestrian movements separately. If the notice and signs do not establish a pedestrian route, contact the responsible authority or ask an on-site official before proceeding; do not treat a vehicle route as permission or proof of suitability for pedestrians.
Recommended Free Tools
When checking a pedestrian detour, look for directions that explicitly cover people walking, not just a route that appears to go around the same closure. If those directions are absent or confusing, do not improvise through a barricaded area or assume that a different mode’s route is open to you. Ask whether the authority has provided a pedestrian alternate.
If the signs do not fit your mode
Do not improvise by entering a barricaded closure or using a path marked for a different group. Ask the responsible authority whether a mode-appropriate alternate exists and whether it is currently open. If you cannot verify a permitted and usable route, choose another trip plan rather than assume the signed motor-vehicle route will work for you.
This check matters even when the alternate seems short or obvious on a map. The route may be intended for a different group, and a map does not resolve whether walking or cycling is permitted. Look for specific instructions from the authority and confirm them against the posted signs before committing to the route.

How can I tell whether a detour is complete?
A useful detour should guide road users around the closure and back to the original road. California’s 2026 MUTCD illustrates advance warning and says detours should be signed so users can traverse the entire route and return to the original roadway. Treat that as California guidance; other states and local road authorities may have different requirements.
As you follow the signs, check that the route remains directed around the closure at junctions and that the signs continue to identify the temporary route or destination. A sign at the beginning is not enough to establish that a later turn is correct. Pay attention to the direction of each sign and whether the next stage still takes you around the affected area rather than toward a barricade.
If a sign points toward a closed section, or if the route becomes unclear, do not cross a barricade to find out where it goes. Stop before entering the closure if you can do so safely, then check with the road authority or an on-site official. If the online notice and what you see on the road do not agree, ask for clarification rather than making an assumption about which version is current.
When choosing between route options for a particular closure, compare whether each option is officially open, marked continuously around and beyond the closure, appropriate for your mode, and practical for your own constraints. These are decision checks, not a ranking of routes supplied by a traffic manual. A route that appears convenient may not be appropriate if its status is unclear or it is not marked for your mode.

The national FHWA MUTCD provides a U.S. baseline for traffic-control devices; its 2023 11th Edition, Section 6I.02, states that each detour shall be adequately marked with standard temporary route and destination signs. The more detailed examples above come from California’s own manual and should not be treated as rules for every state or locality.

For a closure outside California, check the responsible state or local authority’s current requirements and directions rather than assuming the California provisions apply.
In practical terms, use the national manual’s sign requirement as a general reference, while relying on the authority responsible for your particular closure for current local instructions. California’s examples about completing a detour, bicycle movement, and pedestrian movement are useful reminders to check for mode-specific directions, but they do not establish what another jurisdiction requires.

Quick checks before setting out
- Have you found the current notice from the authority responsible for the road?
- Does the notice cover the correct road, closure area, and travel time?
- Do the signs at the closure identify a temporary route and destination?
- Can you follow the signs continuously around the closure without entering a barricaded area?
- Does the notice or signage confirm that the route is intended for your mode of travel?
- If information conflicts or the route is unclear, have you contacted the authority or an on-site official instead of guessing?
These checks are useful before setting out and again when you reach the closure. An online notice helps you plan, while signs at the site direct you along the temporary route. If either source leaves a question unresolved, get clarification rather than treating an app, memory, or assumption as confirmation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get around a road closure?
Check the responsible road authority’s current notice, then follow the temporary route and destination signs through the closure. Confirm that the route applies to your travel mode, and do not enter a barricaded area or guess when signs are unclear.
Where can I check if a road is closed?
Look for the current closure notice, traffic advisory, or work-zone update from the authority responsible for that road. Match the road, closure area, and timing to your trip, then check the signs at the site as you approach.
Should I follow a detour sign or my navigation app?
Use posted temporary route and destination signs to follow the marked detour. An app can help with orientation, but it does not confirm that an alternate route is officially open, continuously marked, or suitable for your mode.
Can I use a motor-vehicle detour on foot or by bicycle?
Do not assume so. Check the closure notice and signs for instructions for pedestrians or cyclists. If they do not establish a permitted, usable route for your mode, ask the road authority or an on-site official about an alternate.
What should I do if detour signs are missing or contradictory?
Do not enter a barricaded closure or guess which route is intended. Stop short of the closure where it is safe to do so, then ask the responsible road authority or an on-site official to clarify.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Not automatically. The 2026 California MUTCD took effect January 18, 2026, and its examples are California guidance. Check the current directions and requirements from the authority responsible for a closure elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
For a temporary closure, check the responsible road authority’s current notice, follow the posted temporary route and destination signs, and confirm the route is intended for your mode. Apps and old notices cannot verify a live closure or establish that an alternate is suitable for walking or cycling. If signs are missing or conflict, do not enter a barricaded area; seek clarification from the authority or an on-site official.
