To find a construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling facility near you, search EPA’s Disaster Debris Recovery Tool, then check your state environmental agency and local solid-waste authority. Search for each material separately, and call the facility before you haul anything: a directory listing is a lead, not confirmation that it accepts your material, load size, or load condition.

Start by identifying what is in the load

“C&D debris” covers distinct material streams rather than one universally accepted waste category. EPA lists common materials such as concrete, wood, asphalt, gypsum, metals, brick, glass, plastics, fixtures, and land-clearing debris. State definitions can differ; for example, Illinois and Florida publish their own definitions. See EPA’s overview of C&D materials, Illinois EPA’s GCDD guidance, and Florida DEP’s C&D definition.

Make a separate inventory for each material, and note whether it is clean, mixed with other debris, painted, treated, or potentially contaminated. Those details affect where it can go and whether a facility will take it.

Search national, state, and local sources

Use EPA’s map to build a candidate list

Start with the EPA Disaster Debris Recovery Tool. EPA says it provides information and locations for more than 20,000 facilities capable of managing different materials and wastes found in disaster debris. Use its map or downloadable data to find candidates by location and relevant waste or material category where available. The tool is focused on disaster-debris recovery, so treat listings as leads—not proof that a facility takes ordinary renovation or demolition loads.

EPA updated the tool’s dataset and map in August 2026, refreshing landfill data and adding each facility’s data source and last-updated date. Check those dates when reviewing a listing, then verify its current policies directly.

Find state and local directories

Check EPA’s state C&D resources, then search your state agency website for terms such as “construction and demolition debris recycling,” “C&D processor,” “solid waste facility,” and “facility directory.” Contact your county or municipal solid-waste authority, recycling office, or waste program as well.

Ohio EPA, for example, recommends checking the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association’s searchable directory, the local solid-waste management authority, and Ohio EPA’s voluntary recycling directory. That is an Ohio example, not a nationwide directory requirement. See Ohio EPA’s recycling guidance.

Search for a specific material and service

Search terms that name both the material and the operation are more useful than “construction debris” alone. Try “concrete recycler,” “asphalt recycling,” “wood waste recycler,” “mixed C&D sorting facility,” or “building-material reuse,” adding your city or county. EPA notes that markets may exist for nonhazardous wood, metal, concrete, asphalt, brick, and block; some materials may also be reused on site where local rules allow. See EPA’s C&D materials guidance.

Call before loading or driving

Give each facility the same facts so you can compare answers: the material list, project location, estimated quantity, whether the load is separated or mixed, and any known treatment or contamination. Ask specifically:

  • Does the facility accept each material in this condition, from this project location, and in this quantity?
  • Must materials be separated? What contamination, painted or treated material, or other restrictions apply?
  • What are the current fees, operating hours, delivery rules, and unloading requirements?
  • Are there limits based on customer type, vehicle, source, or service area? Must you use a particular hauler?
  • Does the facility provide receipts, weight tickets, or other documentation your project needs?

CalRecycle advises checking with a facility before bringing material. Policies and charges are facility-specific and can change, so rely on direct confirmation rather than a directory entry. See CalRecycle’s C&D guidance.

Check permits and project-specific requirements

Before choosing a destination, ask the responsible state or local authority whether your project must use a permitted or approved processor, follow a diversion plan, use a particular hauling arrangement, or retain weight tickets or receipts. Rules depend on location and project; examples from one jurisdiction are not national requirements.

In Illinois, covered GCDD recovery facilities require an agency permit under a requirement effective July 6, 2024. Sacramento, California, describes certified sorting facilities and documentation used for diversion credit. Check the rules that apply to your project rather than assuming either example applies elsewhere. See Illinois EPA’s permit information and Sacramento’s C&D recycling program.

Compare candidates and keep project records

Use the same checks for each facility. Acceptance, eligibility, fees, logistics, and documentation vary, so confirm the details before deciding.

What to compare What to verify
Materials Each material and whether painted, treated, or otherwise conditioned material is accepted.
Load preparation Separated or mixed loads, contamination limits, and sorting requirements.
Eligibility Accepted source, customer type, quantity, vehicle, and service area.
Compliance Required permit or approval status and whether the facility qualifies under your project’s local rules.
Logistics Distance, delivery hours, unloading method, and any required hauler.
Cost and records Current charges and whether the facility supplies receipts, weight tickets, or documentation suitable for project records.

Keep the facility’s confirmation and any receipts or weight tickets with project records when local rules or contract requirements call for proof of diversion.

Handle suspect or regulated materials separately

Do not assume every demolition or renovation material belongs in an ordinary recycling load. EPA identifies lead- and asbestos-containing building materials as regulated and says C&D landfills do not accept hazardous waste unless they are permitted for it and meet applicable standards. For suspect materials, consult your state or local environmental program and the relevant specialist requirements before arranging transport. See EPA’s guidance on C&D materials and hazardous waste.

CalRecycle also notes that fluorescent lamps and mercury-containing items—including switches, thermostats, and batteries—are universal wastes generally not allowed in solid-waste landfills. That guidance describes California; check your own jurisdiction’s rules and ask the receiving facility before delivery. See CalRecycle’s C&D guidance.

Local examples: rules and directories are not interchangeable

  • California: CalRecycle directs users to local assistance contacts and a permitted-facility database, and says local jurisdictions implement CALGreen or a more stringent local rule. Check with your jurisdiction and facility; this is not a nationwide diversion requirement. See CalRecycle.
  • Illinois: Illinois EPA defines GCDD as specified nonhazardous, uncontaminated materials and requires permits for covered GCDD recovery facilities. The permit requirement took effect July 6, 2024. See Illinois EPA.
  • Florida: Florida DEP’s statutory definition includes specified materials such as steel, glass, brick, concrete, asphalt, pipe, gypsum wallboard, and lumber, as well as specified land-clearing and clean construction scraps. It is Florida’s definition, not a universal list. See Florida DEP.
  • Sacramento: The city describes Green Halo as a way for project teams to identify facilities and haulers, track diversion, and store receipts. Its program directs covered mixed C&D loads to county-certified sorting facilities and specifies weight-ticket documentation for diversion credit. These are local program rules. See Sacramento’s program information.

What you need for a location-specific shortlist

A national guide cannot identify and confirm a facility near a particular job without the project’s city or ZIP code, material mix, quantity, and applicable project rules. Facility listings, acceptance policies, hours, and fees can change. Use source update dates where available, then confirm the destination and requirements with the facility and responsible local authority.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
